How did Earth, Wind & Fire’s 1978 song, “September,” become such a perennial classic? Sure, it name-drops a specific date that comes around every year. But it also has filtered down through the decades to be seemingly beloved by both boomers and millennials (and, oh yeah, Gen X).
We’re always fascinated by older songs that seem to get a new lease on life due to the internet (like Toto’s “Africa”). It also certainly helps that EWF’s ’70s R&B groove is still eminently catchy and danceable, even 42 years later. Certain songs are just timeless.
Also, when a song’s studio acapella and instrumental stems somehow get out, enterprising mashup producers and DJs bring new life to these older songs, helping to re-introduce an artist to a new, younger audience by mashing them up with more current material.
