A PLUS D -- ABOUT
A Plus D
aka DJs Adrian & Mysterious
D
- Creators, producers & DJs of Bootie, the world's biggest bootleg mashup club night
- Voted "Best DJs" - 2009 SF Weekly "Best of SF"
BIO: He's a rock singer-turned-DJ who fronts the world's only mashup band. She's a party girl-turned-DJ who runs the biggest mashup party on the planet. Together, they're A Plus D – as in Adrian & Mysterious D. Known mostly as galvanizers of the international mashup scene, since 2001 they have forged a hard-earned reputation as crowd-pleasing selectors who not only shamelessly bridge the gap between genres, but between the alternative and the mainstream. This is best evidenced by the success of their club Bootie, the first and biggest mashup bootleg party in the United States. Launched in San Francisco in 2003, Bootie was listed in Spin magazine as one of the country's "101 Best Nights Out," and has been voted "Best Dance Club" (2006 & 2007 & 2009) and "Best Party Producers" (2008) in the SF Bay Guardian's "Best of the Bay." They were also voted "Best DJs" in the 2009 SF Weekly "Best of SF" Readers Poll. In 2005, they started a successful sister club in Los Angeles, and have since launched monthly Bootie parties in New York City, Paris, Munich, Boston, Berlin, and Brisbane, Australia, further solidifying the DJ couple’s renown as pioneers of the ever-growing mashup movement.
When
they're not huddled over a hot PowerBook playing with Ableton Live,
or digital crate-digging for the latest bastard pop creations from around the
world, the colorful duo can be found at various parties, mixing an eclectic
blend of pop, indie
dance rock, electro, rock, hip-hop and whatever else moves a
dance floor. Quite simply, they know how
to bring the party. As mashup artists, A Plus D have seen their underground creations reach wide appeal. In 2006, their Kanye West vs. Beethoven disco mashup, “Beethoven’s Fifth Gold Digger,” became an worldwide underground club staple, as well as receiving nearly a million views on YouTube. Their classic Le Tigre vs. Missy Elliott bootleg, “Decepta-Freak-On,” was not only hosted on Le Tigre’s own web site, but was named one of the Top 11 Essential Mash-ups in Sarah “Ultragrrrl” Lewitinn’s book, The Pocket DJ. Their mashups have also received tons of airplay on influential radio stations, from LA's KCRW and New York's WFMU, to Eddy Temple-Morris (The Remix) and James Hyman (Rinse Mix) on the U.K.'s XFM.
One of their newest mashup hits is "Stardust Kids," a David Bowie vs. MGMT track that blew up on indie music blogs and playlists. In fact, even the editor of Bowie.net called it "an exciting and convincing slice of pure pop magic." Their party anthem "Don't Stop Believin' in Planet Rock" (Journey vs. Afrika Bambaataa) was proclaimed "Best Mashup of 2007" by LA radio station Indie 103.1's DJ Paul V. and continues to be a mainstay on many DJ's playlists.
Their
bootleg mixes have been played in dance clubs and radio stations around
the globe, and most recently, their highly
acclaimed Best
of Bootie yearly compilation albums, have
became viral
internet sensations, with over 10,000 gigs worth of downloads every
year they are released. As the SF
Weekly wrote, "Vinyl-only DJs may sniff at this
pair's hard drives, but Adrian & the Mysterious D certainly
know how to rock the party ... committedly
unpretentious and ready to rock,
they deliver the perfect remedy for the occasionally snooty, often
staid dance scene.
