Bootie Top 10 – August 2010

Posted in Top10 on August 17th, 2010 by Adrian

We just threw one of our biggest Bootie parties ever — the epic 7-Year Itch Anniversary in San Francisco — and in less than two weeks, we leave for Burning Man to throw Bootie BRC out in the middle of the desert. So we figured if we didn’t hustle and get this month’s Bootie Top 10 done RIGHT NOW, it wouldn’t get posted until sometime in the middle of September. And we know how you guys HATE that.

So here, without further ado, are the summertime mashup jams that have been blowin’ up our iPods (and CD decks) this past month. RIGHT-CLICK TO DOWNLOAD!

A Plus D – Dancing Since U Been Gone (Robyn vs. Kelly Clarkson) – San Francisco
Why isn’t Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” a smash in the U.S.? It’s a summertime hit over in Europe, but America has been slow to catch on. Perhaps by mashing it up with a #1 U.S. single from five years ago — in this case, the over-produced pop-rock of Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” — we can help Robyn’s chances of making it in America.

For the more dance-floor-friendly REMIX, check out New York Post’s PopWrap blog, where it’s an exclusive download — you can only get it here!

DEEP/BLK vs. Marc Johnce – Waiting for Bulletproof at First Sight (La Roux vs. Kylie Minogue vs. Gwen Stefani) – Nuremberg, Germany
Sometimes it takes a while for a European song to hit here in America, and nothing proves that more than “Bulletproof,” which we were shocked to discover finally became a Top 10 hit in the U.S. nearly a year after it was released! (We knew something was up when the Bootie crowd started singing along!) This mashup is nearly a year old, but considering La Roux only recently became a hit in the States, we’re going to forgive ourselves for missing this one the first time around!

DJs From Mars – California Jump (Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg vs. Van Halen) – Torino, Italy
DJs From Mars are probably our favorite new bootleggers on the scene, putting their own indelible — and instantly recognizable stamp — on everything they do. What’s their formula? Start it off as a simple A+B mashup with a beat, then, after it settles in — BAM! — thick, bass-heavy electro comes charging in, and LOTS of it, complete with filter sweeps and big dramatic moments. The result? Instant club bangers like this one, ready to rock a dance floor!

Go Home Productions – Smells Like Rockin’ Robin (Nirvana vs. Michael Jackson) – Watford, UK
Mark Vidler, the man behind Go Home Productions, just played the Bootie SF 7-Year Anniversary party, and to commemorate the occasion, he put together a special three-song EP entitled “Rockin’ In San Francisco.” This has quickly become the standout track, blowing up the twitterverse and on the road to going viral. What makes this one special is its use of Nirvana’s vocals rather than music, fusing it with Michael Jackson’s “Rockin’ Robin” backing, and its oh-so-happy and innocent tweedle-dee-dee’s — putting a brand new spin on “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” resulting in a case of dead pop stars uniting in perfect harmony.

The Kleptones – Lazy Dancer (Silversun Pickups vs. Yuksek) – Brighton, UK
We were elated when The Kleptones released “Shits & Giggles,” a new album of mashups a mere six months after their last magnum opus. Granted, it’s an “odds-and-sods” B-sides collection of tracks that didn’t make it on to their previous albums, but considering they usually take four years between albums, we’re just happy there’s new material — especially when it’s as gorgeous as this track. We know this won’t be for everyone, but every now and then we have to include a very personal choice on the Bootie Top 10, and not only do we love the Silversun Pickups (we just saw them play an epic homecoming show at The Greek in LA ) we also have a soft spot for 8-bit-sounding electronica.

LeeDM101 – Blue Boys Cure Everything (Phoenix vs. The Cure vs. Headman) – South West UK
LeeDM101 has quietly come up through the ranks to become one of the best bootleggers on the scene, and this well-crafted mashup proves his winning streak. Taking indie darlings Phoenix (who prove that most “overnight success stories” take ten years) and mashing them up seamlessly with a dark Cure classic — and then adding more beats from Headman — make this a gem of track.

Martinn – Ridin’ Clocks (Jason Derülo vs. Coldplay) – Netherlands
Martinn makes his first appearance on the Bootie Top 10 with this great mashup of two very different pop songs from two very different genres, yet blend seamlessly into a track both beautiful and smooth, evoking thoughts of driving down the highway, alone on a starry night, thinking about life and love and everything that comes with it.

Rad Bad – Moving Da Royalty (Will Smith vs. Daft Punk) – South Australia / New York City
We get mashup submissions in our email in box every day, and we’re sorry to say, well … many of them aren’t quite THERE yet. So it’s always a nice surprise when a good one comes along, and we have to go back and look and be like, “Where did THAT come from?” In this case, it comes from South Aussie DJ — and recent New York City transplant — Rad Bad, who did the smart thing and sent us his “most famous mash,” and … we can see why! Cheeky and fun, and makes us want to hear more!

DJ Schmolli – Big Booty Bitches In Miami (Bombs Away vs. LMFAO vs. Busta Rhymes vs. Sir Mix-A-Lot) – Vienna, Austria
How did the guy known for his Slayer mashups go on to make THIS? Yup, that’s why we LOVE DJ Schmolli … not to mention why we love the “no genre is safe” motto of mashup culture. Schmolli just released his first “mixtape” in ages, “Pirate Nation Vol. 1,” and also just played Bootie Rio, where we’re sure this was a big hit of the night! Finally, an anthem for the curvier girls out shakin’ it!

DJ Topcat – Folsom Prison Gangstaz (Johnny Cash vs. Eazy-E) - Seattle
With this brilliant mashup, DJ Topcat makes an unlikely connection between the old-school country music of Johnny Cash and the ghetto gangsta rap of Eazy-E — after all, both artists, in their respective days, were known for their “outsider” status, and frank honest lyrics that glorified violence and guns. And here, despite the separation of generations, race, and culture, it all comes together. This is one of the things we love best about mashup culture: seeing two artists — who seem incredibly disparate and with completely different fan bases — and finding that both are actually just two sides of the same coin.

Bootie Top 10 x2 – June/July 2010

Posted in Top10 on July 12th, 2010 by Adrian

Ever since we got back from two months on tour, we’ve had a bit of a rough time getting ourselves back onto a “regular” schedule, as you can probably tell by this, yet another overdue Bootie Top 10 list. In fact, it’s starting to become a “Top 10″ in name only, as we just can’t help including two months’ worth of mashups. Yup, double the mashups, double the fun!

We just did “Lady Gaga vs. Madonna Night” a few weeks ago at Bootie SF, and it was our second biggest Bootie party ever, with nearly 1,500 people. A lot of you have been asking for some of the mashups we played that night, so if you’re a bit Gaga-adverse, you might want to skip around a bit.  However, we also have a healthy dose of other genres such as electro, hip-hop, etc., so there should be something for everyone.

Without further ado … sorted (mostly) alphabetically by bootlegger…

DJ BC – Eyes Without A Bootie (Billy Idol vs. John Blu) – Boston
Bootie Boston’s own DJ BC provides us with a new slow jam to ramp down the night. And yes, we’re suckers for a mashup that name-drops our party’s name!

Faroff - You Ring Me Round (Like A Telephone) (Lady Gaga vs. Beyoncé vs. Dead Or Alive) – Brasília/Los Angeles
The video for this keeps getting pulled down from YouTube, thanks to Lady Gaga’s label (who were all about having Bootie mash her up before her fame, the hypocrites!) But here’s the audio mashup, as Brazil’s Faroff realizes that the classic ’80s hit, “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” is one of those perfect pop songs that seems to magically mash up with nearly everything!

CALIFORNIA GURLS DOUBLE SHOT!
DJ Digital Dave - Back To Cali Gurls (Bootie Edit) (Notorious B.I.G. vs. Katy Perry) – Pittsburgh
Mash2Mix – California Tik Tok Gurls (Bootie Edit) (Katy Perry vs. KeSha) – The Netherlands
Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” is definitely this year’s summertime jam, which is why we wish someone would leak a clean acapella track from it. But until then, we’ve got these two mashups that simply HAD to be done: The first makes the inevitable lyrical connection between Biggie and Katy and their enjoyment of all California has to offer, while the second simply proves that this summer’s biggest pop song is basically the same as last winter’s biggest pop song, which is why so many DJs and producers have mashed these two up. (This was the first one out of the gate though, and the best, in our humble opinion– it was a Bootie exclusive to NY Post’s “Pop Wrap” blog last month, read about it here.)

Go Home Productions – How Soon Is Independence? (Destiny’s Child vs. The Smiths) – Watford, UK
Go Home Productions, aka Mark Vidler, is considered by many to be one of the early bootleg scene’s biggest stars. He began mashing up in 2002 and did both the legally-released “Rapture Riders” mashup (Blondie vs. The Doors) as well as the UK-only Mashed CD, a full album of copyright-cleared mashups. Recently, he’s made a much-welcome return to the mashup world, such as this with this track, which uses classic source material such as The Smiths. And he’ll be playing at Bootie’s 7-Year Itch Anniversary in San Francisco on August 14th!

Lazyellow – Blah Blah Blah Chillin Romance (Ke$ha vs. Lady Gaga vs. Wale) – London, UK
Totally infectious club-banger mashup from a newcomer to the mashup scene, Lazyellow from the U.K. We were not big fans of Ke$ha’s “Blah Blah Blah,” but hearing it mashed with thumpy beats and Lady Gaga’s “rah-rah-ah-ah-ah, etc.” as a chorus makes it awesome.

LeeDM101 – (Find Myself) A Heap of Love (Florence & The Machine vs. Depeche Mode vs. Imogen Heap) – South West UK
Simply a stunner of a slow jam, and our favorite Florence & The Machine mashup thus far. Gorgeous and beautiful. Also, it’s nice to see Lee revisiting his Depeche Mode fan roots!

DJ LOBSTERDUST DOUBLE SHOT!
DJ Lobsterdust – Knock Out Eileen (LL Cool J vs. Dexy’s Midnight Runners) – New York City
DJ Lobsterdust – Two Stop (Journey vs. Grizzly Bear) – New York City
Our favorite mashup producer from New York City (and perennial Bootie Top 10 contributor) DJ Lobsterdust returns … and we couldn’t pick just one! The first is a smile-inducing genre-clash of ’80s hits … one that really knocked us out! The second forces indie hipsters to embrace their inner Journey. And come on, who doesn’t secretly love “Don’t Stop Believin’? It’s practically the Bootie theme song!

MadMixMustang – Pac-Man Inferno (Buckner & Garcia vs. The Tramps) – The Netherlands
Speaking of smile-inducing ’80s mashups, this ridiculous combination has us longing for a hot tub time machine so we can take it back with us and blast it on a boombox at the video arcade (while rockin’ our feathered hair and Jordache jeans, of course!) We also love that MadMixMustang uses a lot of source material that other mashup producers overlook … I mean, c’mon, “Pac-Man Fever”? Totally tubular.

MARC JOHNCE IS A “MONSTER” DOUBLE SHOT!
Marc Johnce – Monster Never Can Say Goodbye (Lady Gaga vs. The Communards) – Nuremberg, Germany
Marc Johnce – Monster Will Come Back (Lady Gaga vs. Holy Ghost!) – Nuremberg, Germany
We had plenty of “Just Dance” and “Bad Romance” mashups for “Lady Gaga vs. Madonna Night” at Bootie, but none of “Monster.” Fortunately, Marc Johnce came through at the last minute with not one, but two mashups of what’s rumored to be Gaga’s next single. OMG, and even more ’80s retro goodness with a forgotten gem from The Communards! And then for the more indie fans, we got a very cool version with Brooklyn electro duo Holy Ghost!

Mashup-Germany – Hit And Drop On All The Single Ladies (Beyoncé vs. Rihanna vs. Ray Charles vs. Snoop Dogg) – Cologne, Germany
What’s great about this track is its use of the timeless Ray Charles track, “Hit the Road Jack.” Plus, the Bootie crowd never seems to tire of “Single Ladies.” Here, Mashup-Germany uses his signature multi-song combo style to wonderful effect, even adding in some “Drop It Like It’s Hot” in the mix. Never fails to get everyone’s hands up!

Mighty Mike – Heart-Shaped Desires (Nirvana vs. Muse) – France
Released eight months ago, this one is a bit of a iPod sleeper hit for us, combining two of favorite band’s songs into a dark concoction, full of creepy cool menace.

LADY GAGA vs. MADONNA DOUBLE SHOT!
Mkaio – Alejandro (Mkaio’s Holiday Smash) (Lady Gaga vs. Madonna) – Salt Lake City, Utah BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE
Nathan Scot – Alejandro De La Isla Bonita (Lady Gaga vs. Madonna) – San Francisco
What would “Lady Gaga vs. Madonna Night” be at Bootie without actual Lady Gaga vs. Madonna mashups? The classic “Queen of Pop” dukes it out with the current “Queen of Pop” in a mashup duel using Gaga’s current single, “Alejandro.” The first is a “Bootie Exclusive,” while the second showcases Lady Gaga’s obvious influence for “Alejandro” (I’m talking to you, “La Isla Bonita”) as well as both artists’ mutual love of Latino culture (or at least Latino boys!)

Mochi Beats – Time After Romance (Lady Gaga vs. Cyndi Lauper vs. Three 6 Mafia) – Orange County, California
“Bad Romance” is a such a dance floor stormer, that this darker atmospheric (yet still thumpy) version from mashup scene newcomer Mochi Beats comes off as quite an unexpected surprise!

Stein-Vidar – Like A Virgin At The Y.M.C.A. (Bootie Edit) (Madonna vs. The Village People) – Norway
Another newcomer to the mashup scene, Norway’s Stein-Vidar brings the classic pop cheese with this ridonkulous mashup. The songs work great together, and we added back in some of the original “Y.M.C.A.” (hence the Bootie Edit) just so when you feel the need to do the requisite Y-M-C-A arm gestures!

Thriftshop XL – Abba Alpha Beat Beet Roots Of All Evil (ABBA vs. The Bloody Beetroots vs. Alphabeat) – Scotland
How do you turn classic pop cheese into electro-breakbeat madness? Like this. Wait for it, wait for it … and then there goes ABBA, down the rabbit hole.

Titus Jones – Imma Stop Loving Drugs (Ke$ha vs. Glee Cast vs. La Roux vs. Black Eyed Peas vs. Iglu & Hartly) – Clarksville, Arkansas
One of our favorite mashup producers, known for his multi-song, multi-layered creations, returns with this fantastic pop gem. Titus Jones just graduated from college — someone hire this guy for audio production, he’s awesome! Bonus points for using the Glee Cast version of “Don’t Stop Believin’. Did we mention it’s practically the Bootie theme song? :-)

Bootie Top 25 (Extra Late Post-Tour Edition) – April/May 2010

Posted in Top10 on May 20th, 2010 by Adrian

As many of you know, we – A Plus D, aka Adrian & Mysterious D – have been on tour for the better part of two months, doing Bootie parties all over the globe. First, we were in Europe for most of April, then back to San Francisco, then off to Hong Kong and Singapore, then back again to San Francisco, and then off to Brazil. Whew!

Needless to say, due to our intense travel schedule, we’ve been regretfully neglectful of the Bootie Top 10 these past couple months – not to mention posting tour reports! But we figure you’d rather have free mashups first, and tour reports later, so in an effort to make it up to you, we’re not only doubling it up here, but also throwing in a bunch of mashup “double shots,” bringing the total of mashups downloads to 25.

Many of these were discovered along our travels in Europe, while others were our “DJ secret weapons” on tour. Some are older gems that we recently rediscovered. We’ve even got a few “Bootie Exclusives” in the mix – tracks you won’t find anywhere else.

Sorted (mostly) alphabetically by bootlegger … start right-clickin’!

“RUDE BOY” DOUBLE SHOT
A Plus D - Decode Rude Boy (Rihanna vs. Paramore) – San Francisco, USA
DJ Schmolli – Rude Boy Resort (Rihanna vs. Papa Roach) – Vienna, Austria
Seeing as that “Rude Boy” was one of the biggest hits of the spring, of course we couldn’t pick just one! The first is from ourselves, re-imagining Rihanna as if she were an angst-ridden teenage vampire from one of the “Twilight” movies. The second is a total guilty pleasure from one of our favorite bootleggers, DJ Schmolli, who returns to his hard rock roots with this unexpected genre-clash featuring the much-maligned (but admittedly catchy) Papa Roach. So wrong… yet so right! Are we on time for the 2000s retro-revival yet?

THE YOUNG PUNX MASHUP ALBUM DOUBLE SHOT

A Plus D – Final Telephone (Lady Gaga vs. The Young Punx) – San Francisco, USA
DJ BC – Unbelievable Juice and Gin (EMF vs. The Young Punx) – Boston, USA
In April, the music blog AudioPorn Central teamed up with the UK band The Young Punx to produce a mashup album based on the indie-electro group’s second album, “Mashpop & Punkstep.” Simon Iddol assembled a team of bootleggers (including ourselves and Bootie Boston’s DJ BC) to mash up each of the record’s dozen tracks, and it was released on the same day as the album. Here are two tracks from the “Mashed Popped Punk” project – the first makes Lady Gaga sound as if she’s fronting a cool new indie band, and the second gives EMF’s “Unbelievable” a Brit-rap makeover.

“CALIFORNIA LOVE” DOUBLE SHOT
BootOX – California Skank (Tupac vs. Fatboy Slim) – Munich, Germany
Loo & Placido – Californication (Tupac vs. Roger Troutman vs. Plump DJs vs. Zero Cash) – France
As Californians, we felt we were exporting a bit of our own “California love” while on tour. Now the love get returned, quite literally, by both Bootie Munich’s DJ BootOX and France’s Loo & Placido (who just played Bootie in SF and LA). Two different takes, one for the main floor, the other for Electro-Bootie.

Clivester – Heartbreaking Maps (Yeah Yeah Yeahs vs. Metronomy) – Vienna, Austria
We rediscovered this one while compiling and mixing our electro-flavored “Bootie Banger Mix” for the guys over at Dope.sg, who produced the Bootie Singapore party. How did we miss this one back in August? Beautiful and haunting, yet still made with the dance floor in mind. Remind us to play this at Burning Man just before dawn!

Clockwork – Office Musik (Lil Wayne vs. “The Office” Theme Song) – Los Angeles, USA
We love “The Office. Our first night back from our European tour was spent curled up with the Tivo, catching up on a month’s worth of episodes. So this track’s appearance on the Top 10 should come as no surprise. Cheeky, silly, and well-produced … who knew “The Office” theme would work so well with Lil Wayne and a hip-hop beat?

DJS FROM MARS DOUBLE SHOT
DJs From Mars – Enter Telephone (Lady Gaga feat. Beyoncé vs. Metallica) – Torino, Italy
DJs From Mars - Radio Tik Tok (Ke$ha vs. Queen) – Torino, Italy
We have to thank Bootie Berlin’s DJ Morgoth for helping us discover our new favorite DJ/producer team, DJs From Mars, who hail from Italy. Their basic formula is always to start with a basic A+B framework – then they add the “oomph” in the way of thick bass and buzzsaw instrumentation, which takes a basic mashup and turns it into a throbbing electro club-banger.

Dunproofin – Only Mashups Can Break Your Heart (David Bowie vs. St. Etienne vs. U2 vs. Soup Dragons) – Aberdeen, Scotland
We’re big fans of both David Bowie and electro-tinged dance music – so what’s not to like here? Dunproofin gives one of our favorite tracks from “Ziggy Stardust” a dance beat by mixing in a formerly-forgotten ’90s electronica song (remember when they called it “electronica”?) and mashes up something unexpected.

DJ Fox - Come See About Down (Jay Sean vs. The Supremes) – San Francisco, USA BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
Fox is one of our favorite local San Francisco bootleggers, and we’re grateful that he slips us a few tracks before anyone else gets to hear them. He sent this over yesterday and while we normally like to “live” with a mashup for a while before we decide to put it in the Top 10, we couldn’t resist jumping the gun a bit with this one. Simply lovely.

Go Home Productions – Virgin O’Riley (Madonna vs. The Who) – Watford, UK
Aaaaaand … he’s back! A much-welcome (and long overdue) return from Mark Vidler, part of the UK’s “first wave” of bootleggers, and one of the early mashup scene’s biggest stars. This turned out to be one of our “secret weapons” on tour, never once failing to get the entire crowd to sing along. An instant classic.

The Kleptones – This Song Smells (Nirvana vs. Blur) – Brighton, UK  BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
Take two of the most iconic songs from the ’90s — both of which are rockin’, yet shockingly danceable — and put them together. Two words: Can’t. Fail. The original version of this track is on The Kleptones’ Uptime/Downtime album, but Eric Kleptone was nice enough to give us this unmixed version when he stayed at our SF apartment for a week. This turned out to be another “secret weapon” on tour, and we often closed our sets with this.

Ludachrist – Pon De Foley (Major Lazer vs. Harold Faltermeyer) – Los Angeles, USA
This track was all abuzz on the blogosphere a couple months ago, and had we actually put out a Top 10 in a timely manner, we wouldn’t now be looking like we’re late to the party. Oh well, whatever. This track still lights up a dance floor with its ingenious recreation of the classic ’80s keyboard line from “Axel F” by using the modern blips and bloops of the Major Lazer song, “Pon de Floor.” Clever.

MadMixMustang – Take Me On the Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne vs. a-ha) – The Netherlands
Two musical polar opposites from the ’80s — new wave and heavy metal — come together in one brilliant mashup. We love extreme genre-clashes when they just seem to magically work, and this track from the always-dependable MadMixMustang certainly delivers the “wow” factor.

Mashup-Germany - Imagine One Day (So Far Away) (Matisyahu vs. John Lennon vs. Blink 182 vs. Gentleman vs. Bob Marley) – Frankfurt, Germany
We played with Mashup-Germany at both Bootie Berlin and Bootie Hamburg, and while he certainly knows how to tear up a dance floor, we have to admit that his “slow jam” mashups are also something REALLY special. This multi-layered mashterpiece is simply a gorgeous piece of work. By interweaving the vocals of four different artists from four very different genres, it’s revealed that they’re all basically singing about the same universal thing: love.

MIGHTY MIKE DOUBLE SHOT
Mighty Mike – Pressure Time (Queen & David Bowie vs. MGMT) – France
Mighty Mike – Kinda Fair (Lily Allen vs. Robert Palmer) – France
Mighty Mike has turned out to be one of our favorite bootleggers, consistently producing some great mashup work. Both of these tunes have become a bit of “sleeper hits” at Bootie, with “Pressure Time” getting requests, ” and “Kinda Fair” often getting played in the early part of the night, where it’s perfect for getting your drink on.

DJ Morgoth – Sing Hallelujah To The New Divide (Linkin Park vs. Dr. Alban & Yamboo) – Berlin, Germany
Only Bootie Berlin’s DJ Morgoth could take Linkin Park and make them sound so … gay! Sure, he says its “Eurodance,” but we all know what THAT means! While this might alienate Linkin Park fans (what? a mashup without Jay-Z?) — not to mention fans of Eurodance — it puts a big smile on our face every time we hear it!

Obvious Productions – Standing In The Way Of Your Friends (Gossip vs. Justice vs. Simian) – North Wales, UK
Do you know why we love going on tour? Because we can then play American artists like Gossip (who remain a marginalized cult act Stateside) and get a HUGE reaction because “Standing In The Way of Control” was such a big hit everywhere else in the world. Pair that with another artist like France’s Justice, who are also WAY more popular outside the U.S., and it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Years ago, the creator of this track (whose secret identity was revealed to us on tour as Soundhog) anonymously attributed it to “Obvious Productions,” because he thought it was such a simple mashup idea, that he didn’t want to take credit for it. Yet, what he doesn’t realize is that the simplest ideas are often simply the best. A rediscovered gem, and a total “secret weapon.”

DJ Shyboy - Tour De Miami (LMFAO vs. Kraftwerk) – Los Angeles, USA
When LA’s DJ Shyboy played this before our set at Bootie Berlin, we simply HAD to have it! Not sure if this dumbs down the electro krautrock of Kraftwerk, or strangely elevates the joke of LMFAO to something, well … something a little LESS jokey … but either way, it works for us! An oldie, but a goodie.

Sugamotor – Heat My Body (Mariah Carey vs. Massive Attack) – France
Taken from the sex-themed mashup album Sex Mashine, which was compiled by Sugamotor himself, this track is perfect for getting that certain someone “in the mood.” Smooth, sexy, and … kinda dark, in a very cool, moody way. Plus, extra props for using two artists highly under-utilized in the mashup world.

DJ Tripp – Papa Was A Ghost (The Temptations vs. Deadmau5) - Santa Cruz, USA BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
While we were away on tour, Tripp was the DJ who held it down in our absence at Bootie SF, and tracks like this showcase why we left him in charge of the decks. How do you take an old-school classic by The Temptations and make it sound weirdly current? Why, by having them sing with Deadmau5, of course!

Victor Menegaux – Nookieflies (Owl City vs. Limp Bizkit) – Seattle, USA
Victor says “I was laughing the entire time I made this.” We are so sick of the earnest saccharine sweetness of that damn, unavoidable “Fireflies” song, that hearing Fred Durst rap something as inane as “Nookie” over the top of it (possibly the worst song from the past 15 years) makes us laugh too!

Bootie Top 10 (or 20, or 30) coming soon, we promise!

Posted in Top10 on May 18th, 2010 by Adrian

Just got back home to San Francisco after a whirlwind two months of touring Europe, Asia, and Brazil, with brief pit stops back here in SF to keep the parties running. We were overextended, so needless to say, we are now WAY overdue for a Bootie Top 10 posting!

We promise, we will be rectifying this VERY soon! And we’ll make it up to you guys too, by making it a Top 20 (or maybe a Top 30?) We owe you a couple months’ worth, at least!

One thing we learned in our travels was how to say “sorry” in so many languages:

Entschuldigung, desculpe, désolé, anteeksi, atsiprašau, bocsánat!

Check back here soon!

Bootie Top 10 – March 2010

Posted in Top10 on March 4th, 2010 by Adrian

We’re pressed for time this month, as we’ve got Bootie Berlin’s DJ Morgoth here in California for the week, so we’re just going to cut the blather and do a quick intro instead. Besides, does anyone even bother to even read our blurbs, or do you guys just skip it and get straight to the downloads? (Leave comments below to let us know!)

UPDATE: Okay, so you guys let us know, and it seems that at least a few of you appreciate the blurbs. So we’ve updated this Bootie Top 10 with our comments for each track.

Anyway, we’ve actually got twelve (count ‘em, 12!) tracks for you, due to having two “Double Shots,” the first featuring Kate Bush (including an interesting hybrid mashup/cover from UK artist Dan Black) and the second featuring Chicago’s The Hood Internet (we couldn’t decide between STV SLV and ABX, so we just picked both!) We’ve also got a couple of “Bootie Exclusives” for you — mashups you won’t find anywhere else — as well as a bunch of other gems, including tracks both brand-new and a couple months old (which gives us enough time to determine that they’re fantastic Bootie party tracks!

Enjoy, and start right-clickin’! – A+D

DOUBLE SHOT: Kate Bush
Apollo Zero – I’m Ready & Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush vs. Kano) – New Orleans
Dan Black – Get Into Cloudbusting (Kate Bush vs. Dan Black covering Madonna) – UK
We’re both big fans of Kate Bush, so we when had the opportunity to do a “double shot” of mashups that feature the iconic ’80s British songstress, we couldn’t resist. The first gives her biggest hit, “Running Up That Hill,” a nice disco backbeat, while the second is an inspired mashup/cover hybrid from Dan Black, who sings Madonna’s “Get Into The Groove” over a remixed version of “Cloudbusting.”

Bassnectar – Where Is My Mind? (Bassnectar Remix) (The Pixies vs. Bassnectar) – San Francisco
This starts off innocuously enough, womming and throbbing away before mutating into the most heavy electro breakbeat version of the Pixies you’ve ever heard. Seeing as that Bassnectar is probably the “biggest name DJ” to come out of the Burning Man scene, we can’t help but imagine this blasting out of a ginormous sound system out on the playa at dawn. “Where is my mind?” … indeed!

DJ BC – Could You Be Love Gamed? (Bob Marley vs. Lady Gaga) – Boston BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
There haven’t been very many killer mashups of “Love Game,” but here, Bootie Boston’s DJ BC rectifies that situation, making an unlikely lyrical connection between Lady Gaga and Bob Marley. Could this be love?

Copycat – I Was Made For A Heavy Cross (Kiss vs. The Gossip) – Sweden
Kiss is a rock band that dabbled in disco back when it was originally popular in the ’70s. The Gossip are quite a different rock band that — like many of their indie-rock contemporaries — are also currently dabbling in disco. So why NOT put these two together? Apparently, disco is NOT dead!

The Face Melters – Ice Ice Tik Tok (Vanilla Ice vs. Ke$ha) - San Francisco BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
The debut track from The Face Melters, a collaboration between frequent Bootie Top 10 contributor DJ Fox and his accomplice Kool Karlo. What can we say that Pop Wrap’s Ryan Brockington at the New York Post hasn’t already said? “The dollar store version of Lady Gaga, both in name spelling and song yelling, has recently been pureed with one of the ’80s most quintessential bleach-tipped rappers … take a moment to accept the fact that Ke$ha may just be the Vanilla Ice of our era. Yikes.”

DOUBLE SHOT: The Hood Internet
ABX of The Hood Internet – Ignition (Keep It Remixing Louder) (R. Kelly vs. Major Lazer) - Chicago
STV SLV of The Hood Internet – I Ain’t That Earthquake (Wallpaper. vs. Little Boots) – Chicago
We couldn’t pick just one! Besides, we didn’t want to play favorites between The Hood Internet’s ABX and STV SLV, so they get one each here … and when both tracks are this good, why not? R. Kelly gets some hipster cred mashed-up with Major Lazer, and speaking of hipster cred, you get a double dose of both with STV SLV’s combo of two very-now “bands of the moment.”

The Kleptones – Welcome Back (Guns N’ Roses vs. Chemical Brothers vs. LFO vs. Basement Jaxx vs. Missy Elliott) - Brighton, UK
The Chemical Brothers always approached dance music with very big, rock ‘n’ roll beats (hence the term “big beat”) so it actually makes kinda perverse sense that The Kleptones would mash them (and several others) up with some classic Guns ‘N Roses. This is a special unmixed, “single” version – the original appears on their new mashup album Upside/Downside.

MadMixMustang – Take Me On The Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne vs. a-ha) – The Netherlands
We gotta admit — the first time we played this at Bootie, we weren’t really sure how it was gonna go over. But we shouldn’t have worried — this is the classic sort of A+B mind-fuck mashup that made Bootie’s reputation. In fact, it’s mashups like that originally made us fall in love with the genre to begin with.

DJ Tripp – How Low In The House (Ludacris vs. Steve Aoki) – Santa Cruz, CA
We’re loving the new Ludacris single, and it’s even better coupled with some bangin’ electro dance-floor beats, mashed together courtesy of Bootie regular, DJ Tripp, whose output has been nothing but quality as of late.

The White Panda – Fireflies Goin’ Down (Yung Joc vs. Owl City) – Chicago/Los Angeles
The White Panda mixtape amply proves that you can pretty much plop a rap vocal over just about ANYTHING, which unfortunately makes most hip-hop mashups sound a bit trite and uninspired … and not really all that edgy. This track however, is a notable exception, adding some much-needed dirty street-cred to the overly-precious sicky-sweet sounds of that damn “Fireflies” song. Catchy as all get out. Meet me at Bootie … it’s goin’ down!

Bootie Top 10 – February 2010

Posted in Top10 on February 2nd, 2010 by Adrian

We skipped the month of January, since we had just put out the Best of Bootie 2009 CD. But damn, there was such an abundance of good material these past two months, that we easily could have put together a Top 20 instead of a Top 10! But we’re just gonna save the rest for March… Right-click to download!

A Plus D – Don’t You Want My Bad Romance (Lady Gaga vs. Human League) – San Francisco
We knew we were taking a gamble when we went ahead and put this on the “Best of Bootie 2009″ CD — barely a week before the end of year! Sure, call us biased … but fortunately, we’ve been getting tons of great feedback and reports of hearing this track in clubs and at parties everywhere! Lady Gaga goes New Wave! And it sounds like both artists need some serious relationship counselling. :-)

DJ Jay-R of C.H.A.O.S. Productions – Ke$ha Just Wants To Have Fun (Ke$ha vs. Cyndi Lauper) – Oakland
Just listen to the lyrics of Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok,” and really, isn’t is basically just a raunchier, more updated version of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” anyway? This track is fun, flirty, and ready to rock the party. A much-welcome comeback for Oakland’s own DJ Jay-R.

Jeff Jones – Party In The Empire State (Jay-Z & Alicia Keys vs. Miley Cyrus) – Boston
For our first Bootie NYC party in three months, we just KNEW we had to drop a mashup of the instantly-iconic “Empire State of Mind.” Only one problem … there weren’t that many out there! But mere minutes before we left for the party, we found this simple-yet-effective A+B. And let’s face it, with Miley name-dropping Jay-Z, coupled with the whole “hands up” vibe of both songs, these two were obviously meant to be together!
NEW YORK CITY BONUS TRACK!
Purple Crush – NYC Bad Girl Lovegame (Purple Crush vs. Lady Gaga) – Los Angeles
We’re feeling the love with New York lately, perhaps due to the fact that we unexpectedly had our biggest Bootie party ever there — over 840 people! It was crazy, so we’re throwing in an NYC-inspired bonus track, created by Purple Crush, a Brooklyn-based electro duo who recently moved to LA. We love it when artists mash up their own tunes!

The Kleptones – Cubikini (Bikini Kill vs. 808 State) – Brighton, UK
From the album Upside/Downtime
This is the soundtrack of our lives back in the early ’90s, where a typical weekend might consist of going to see a Riot Grrrl girl band play at some trashy punk club down the street, before heading out to an all-night rave in a warehouse on the outskirts of town. Did The Kleptones do the same thing? We love hearing surprising and rarely (if ever) used source material in a mashup, such as Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl.”

DJ Le Clown - Billie Bootie Lazer (Michael Jackson vs. Major Lazer) - Paris
For the record, Adrian HATES Major Lazer, finding its bloops and bleets incredibly annoying. D, on the other hand, loves the crazy sampling sounds and ridiculous rhythms. But here, we find some middle ground, as MJ gives a jolt of familiar melodicism to the modern, oh-so-hipster, “lazer” sound.

MadMixMustang – Is This Digital Love? (Bob Marley vs. Daft Punk) - The Netherlands
Here’s another mashup that we like, in spite of its source material. Neither one of us are especially big fans of reggae — but Daft Punk sounds so shockingly well-suited paired up with Bob Marley, taking an electronic jam and turning it into anthem of love and unity. It’s the dance floor equivalent of “warm fuzzies.”

Marc Johnce – Mr. Crowley Might Like It Louder (Ozzy Osbourne vs. Dada, Obernik & Harris vs. Amanda Blank vs. Major Lazer) – Germany
We love it when hard rock artists from the ’80s get the electro-dance bootleg treatment, especially when they sound as bangin’ as this. How awesome is Ozzy’s “Mr. Crowley” for a dark Electro-Bootie set? Dude, it rocks.

Mashup-Germany – Sexy Bitch In Memphis (Akon vs. Justin Timberlake vs. Robyn vs. The Eagles vs. Cher vs. David Guetta) – Germany
Can rap lyrics get any more shallow and ridiculous? What’s left to do but take them and mash them up with other artists, both probable (Hi, Justin!) and highly unlikely (OMG, the Eagles!). A nice multi-mash from hot newcomer Mashup-Germany.

DJ Morgoth - Any Way You Want My Woman (Journey vs. Wolfmother vs. MSTRKRFT) – Berlin
Wherein, Bootie Berlin’s own DJ Morgoth discovers the awesomeness of a classic American arena rock band from the ’80s by mashing up a song of theirs that came out before he was even born! See? Journey’s music really is the new Great American Songbook! And it sounds hot mashed-up with the Aussie retro-rock of Wolfmother remixed into a sexy groove by hipster heroes MSTRKRFT. Both these bands love the ladies … it’s oh-so-rock-n-roll!

Winkar Lopez – Shots (Hands Up Bootleg) (LMFAO feat. Lil Jon vs. Winkar Lopez) – Mexico City
As unapologetic and unironic fans of MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” we have a soft spot for LMFAO, who not only did the show’s theme song, but whose commercial for “Shots” practically became the show’s OTHER theme song. Winkar Lopez’s bootleg remix will have you “beating up the beat” and fist-pumping like a true guido! “Shotshotshotsshotshots… EVERYBODY!!!”

AND IN CASE YOU’VE BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK:
DJ Earworm – United State of Pop 2009 (Blame It On The Pop) (Mashup of the Top 25 Hit Songs of 2009 According to Billboard Magazine) – San Francisco
What can we say that we haven’t already? Mashup of the year, literally. This should be put in a time capsule for 2009. It’s got over 10 million views on YouTube, it was listed as #1 on the “Must List” in Entertainment Weekly, and Earworm was profiled on CNN.com. It’s an epic tour de force that, with its widespread mainstream attention, doesn’t just elevate the mashup artform — it takes it to a new level of legitimacy. Bravo!

Bootie Top 10 – December 2009

Posted in Top10 on December 8th, 2009 by Adrian

Sorted alphabetically by bootlegger. Right-click the song titles to get to the downloadin!

Dan Mei – Papillon The One I Love (R.E.M. vs. Editors) - Denmark
R.E.M. gets an indie-electro makeover courtesy of the Editors … well, actually, courtesy of Danish bootlegger Dan Mei, who skillfully melds these two songs into a dark disco dance-floor banger.

Dave Wrangler – Tardy For The Party (Dave Wrangler Remix) (Kim Zolciak vs. Dave Wrangler) – Houston
Total pop culture detrius from one of the women of the TV show “The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” made surprisingly tolerable (and dance-floor-friendly) in this unsanctioned bootleg remix by Houston’s Dave Wrangler, who has taken it from silly to dance-floor groovy.

Half Mast/Hat – Poker Faces (Lady Gaga vs. Christopher Walken vs. Eric Cartman) - Phoenix / New York City
From the team who brought you the Lazytown vs. Lil’ Jon internet meme “Cooking By The Book,” this mashup is more in the style of “celebrity karaoke,” but is still ridiculous fun. So simple, so stupid — but we can’t stop quoting it! Adrian always mimics the “Oh!” like Christopher Walken, while D prefers Cartman’s “I love it.” Be sure to check out the VIDEO!

Hi-brid – Never Gonna Kill Time (The Killers vs. Culture Club vs. Rick Astley) – London
There are a lot of ’80s influences in the music of the Killers … but for some reason, Culture Club isn’t one of the bands they name-drop in interviews. But they should! This mashup is for anyone who ever said “The Killers are so gay!” … and meant it as a compliment!

LeeDM101 – Womanizer On Fire (Kings of Leon vs. Britney Spears vs. Jason Nevins) – U.K.
Speaking of gay … Kings of Leon have never sounded as gay than they do here, mashed up with the thumping circuit-party dance beats of Britney Spears (as remixed by Jason Nevins). Yet, they still retain their bad-ass anthemic quality.

DJ Lobsterdust – Deceptishot (Pat Benatar vs. Le Tigre) – New York City
Grrrl power from two different decades come together in this underrated gem. The world needs more Pat Benatar (and Le Tigre!) mashups, and here, NYC’s DJ Lobsterdust does his best to rectify this unfortunate situation.

Marc Johnce – Three Lonely Paparazzi (Britney Spears vs. Lady Gaga vs. Freemasons) – Germany
Triple the divas = triple the fabulousness. Lady Gaga and Britney Spears both make their second appearances combined with the Freemasons (and their guest diva vocalist) in this finely-crafted sythesis of everything we’re loving about pop and electro-house music right now.

Rhythm Scholar – Any Way You Want It (Syntax Error Remix) (Journey vs. Rhythm Scholar) – Chicago
OMG, we love this track so much! We are both unapologetic, un-ironic fans of Journey, so having something besides “Don’t Stop Believin” to play for the Bootie dance floor makes us jump up and down and go crazy (and sing at the top of our lungs.) Rhythm Scholar puts his production skills to good use turning this classic rock track into a fabulous electro club banger, primed and ready for the dance floor.

Viper Pilot – Sugalumps (Flight of the Conchords vs. Missy Elliott vs. Busta Rhymes vs. Beastie Boys) - Brisbane, Australia BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
Mixing a parody of a hip-hop song with actual serious hip-hop artists starts to blur the differences between the two. Who’s really “real,” and who’s “frontin’”? Bootie Brisbane’s Viper Pilot pairs the New Zealand comedy duo with the real deal, and with some clever cutting-and-pasting back-and-forth, he showcases just how perfectly they nail it! This track will kick your badonkadonk!

DJ Zebra – Get It On My Mind (Marvin Gaye vs. The Pixies) – Paris
Our new “end of the night” song. Not only is this our (and many people’s) favorite Pixies song, it also fits perfectly with Marvin Gaye’s sexy come-on, so caught up in trying to “get it on,” that he might even wonder, “Where is my mind?”

Bootie Top 10 – November 2009

Right-click the song titles to get to the downloadin’!

Clivester – To Lose My Touch (Genesis vs. White Lies vs. IZIT) – Vienna, Austria
This has been a bit of a sleeper track, sneaking its way into Adrian’s late-night and Electro-Bootie sets over the past six months, and finally making its way into our Top 10. There’s just something about hearing Phil Collins go electro that brings a smile to people’s faces when they’re dancing!

Colorpulse – A Glorious Dawn (Carl Sagan vs. Stephen Hawking vs. John Boswell) - Bellingham, Washington
Sheer awesome beauty. While not strictly a mashup, this track is still pure bootleg, auto-tuning sound bites from Carl Sagan’s “Cosmos” and Stephen Hawking’s “Universe” series and combining it with John Boswell’s atmospheric electronica. It’s the first song from The Symphony of Science project, designed to deliver scientific knowledge and philosophy in musical form. Simply put, it gives us chills. Check out the video, which went viral in September.

Glee Cast - It’s My Life Confessions, Pt. II (A+D Bootie Edit) (Bon Jovi vs. Usher cover) - Lima, Ohio BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
You know that mashups are finally entering the mainstream consciousness when they become a major plot point in an episode of a network television program. In this case, the kids from the Fox show Glee were challenged to create their own mashup, and it was girls against boys. In the end, both teams were disqualified (watch the “Vitamin D” episode to see why), but in our minds, the boys totally won with their cover of Bon Jovi vs. Usher. Here, we give it the A+D Edit, adding dance beats and re-arranging and extending it, making it suitable for playing out, where it has become an instant Bootie hit.

Hathbanger – Party & Bullshit (In The USA) (Notorious B.I.G. vs. Miley Cyrus) – Boulder, Colorado
We must admit, we have such a soft spot for Biggie … even more so when he’s rapping with Miley Cyrus, making the insufferable pop tart actually listenable. So simple, so cheesy, so wrong … but oh so right!

The Kleptones – Voodoo Sabotage (Beastie Boys vs. The Prodigy) - Brighton, UK
Are we ready for the retro-’90s revival yet? This track certainly sounds like it! It’s been WAY too long since we’ve heard anything new from The Kleptones, but courtesy of Audio Porn Central, this sneak preview track from their upcoming Upside/Downside album is an excellent banger of a tune that just whets our appetite for what’s to come!

Lenlow – Do Your Thing To The Music (Basement Jaxx vs. Sly & the Family Stone vs. MGMT vs. New Pornographers vs. Sweet vs. Led Zeppelin) – Boston
File this one under “forgotten favorite,” which we only recently rediscovered when we were compiling mashups for our Bootie 6-Year Anniversary CD … which came out over three months ago! (Yup, our lag time is in direct proportion to our lack of free time.) Anyway, better late than never, this multi-layered, soulful mashup from Bootie Boston’s Lenlow is the last thing he released (over 14 months ago!) and makes us pine for the days when he was releasing tracks on a monthly basis.

DJ Lobsterdust – NirGaga (Nirvana vs. Lady Gaga) - New York City
None of us were really sure about this one at first. Sure, we have a bunch of mashups that use the classic “Smells Like” instrumental. But this was the first one to use the ACAPELLA, and pairing Kurt’s anguished vocals with Lady Gaga’s pristine pop might have seemed like sacrilege. Yet every time we’ve played this at Bootie, everyone screams along like mad … proving once again that despite its grunge pedigree, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” just might be the perfect pop song.

Makaio – You Belong With Me (Makaio’s Kanye Club Mix) (Taylor Swift vs. Kanye West) – Utah
“Imma let you finish, but Makaio made one of the best Kanye West/Taylor Swift mashups of all time!” After Kanye unceremoniously interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, it was only a matter of minutes before someone had the idea to mash these two artists together. Simply put, it HAD to be done, and here, Makaio not only does it, but does it well, producing a well-crafted club track out of Taylor Swift’s country-teen-pop.

DJ Tripp – Just Stop Believin’ (Lady Gaga vs. Journey)
– Santa Cruz, CA BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
If there’s one thing the Bootie crowd loves, it’s singing along to Journey’s now-iconic “Don’t Stop Believin’” And for years, our own mashup pairing the tune with “Planet Rock” was the definitive Bootie club anthem. But now, we’ve finally got another contender, courtesy of DJ Tripp, who gives Lady Gaga her second appearance in this month’s Top 10. Pure dance floor gold!

DJ Schmolli – Complicated Sex On Fire (Kings Of Leon vs. Avril Lavigne) - Vienna, Austria
Frequent readers of this blog know how much we love the “closing tune” ballad, and this month’s slow jam gem is perfect for Bootie SF, where at the end of the night, couples are often seen making out in the corners or on the dance floor. In the haze of a drunken hour, they might think that their “sex is on fire,” but we hope the next morning they’re not wondering how they made “things so complicated!”

Bootie Top 10 – October 2009

Posted in Top10 on October 19th, 2009 by Adrian

DJ Axel – Steppin’ Out Wherever You Like (T.I. vs. Tony Bennett) – Los Angeles
A fairly extreme genre-clash, which is, after all, the whole reason we got into this “mashup thing” to begin with. How cool does T.I. sound rapping with Tony Bennett? It totally mellows out the thug rapper with a chilled-out lounge vibe. DJ Axel proves that we can have whatever we like!

DJ BC – Everybody’s Everyday Girl (Fleetwood Mac vs. Snoop Dogg vs. Kanye West vs. Q-Tip vs. Capleton)
– Boston BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE! From the forthcoming Fleetwood Mash album from Radio Clash
We’ve been waiting forever for Radio Clash’s Fleetwood Mash album to come out, and this “Bootie Exclusive” from Bootie Boston’s DJ BC has helped fast-track its release … finally! We’ve been spinning this in our early sets for months now, and are so glad to not have to keep it to ourselves anymore — we can now happily share this awesome track with you!

CjR – Call Me Uprising (Blonde vs. Muse)
– West Yorkshire, UK
Indie-glam-prog-new wave? Whatever you want to call it, this works for us! We’ve been LOVING the new stompy Muse single, and having Debbie Harry join the band for this inspired mashup just sweetens the deal. The Muse guitar squeals along with Blondie belting out “Call Me” on the choruses are a match made in mashup heaven.

DJ Earworm – Beautiful Mashup (Sean Kingston vs. DJ Earworm) – San Francisco
DJ Earworm has become THE “go-to” mashup producer for record labels — you may remember his recent artist-solicited-and-approved Annie Lennox mashup release — which is how this solid slice of pop collage came to be. Sean Kingston’s people wanted all four of his singles combined into one cohesive track, and here is the successful result. Extra points for integrating the Sean Kingston “mashup” lyric into the chorus!

DJ Fox – Here Comes The Lovestepper (Lady Gaga vs. Ini Kamoze) - San Francisco
Guaranteed to kick-start a party! San Francisco’s own DJ Fox continues to prove his dance-floor savvy with a crowd-pleasing jam pretty much MADE for the clubs. It’s also a nice interplay of these two sexed-up and ready-for-action crooners.

Jells Mayhem of The Illuminoids – Welcome To The Jungle (Serpentine Edit) (Guns N’ Roses vs. Jells Mayhem) – Los Angeles
This one is soooooooo Bootie LA! Not that we don’t play it at our other parties, but G N’R — and this song in particular — just seems to play such a big part in the Los Angleles iconography. Jells Mayhem of The Illuminoids strikes out on his own to produce this thumping electro edit of the ’80s hard rock classic, giving it a modern electro makeover while still retaining the integrity of the original.

MadMixMustang – The Ice Cream Mash (Vanilla Ice vs. 20 Fingers vs. Enur feat. Natasja vs. Sesame Street) – The Netherlands
Some mashups simply slap a couple songs together and that’s it. Then there are those that combine songs into a melange of lyrical interplay and inspired samples. This is one of those mashups, making the connection between “Ice Ice Baby,” “Lick It,” and, well… Ernie’s complicated ice cream order from an episode of Sesame Street! I scream, you scream, we all scream … for this ice cream mashup!

DJ Paul V. – Might Like Ghosts Better (Amanda Blank vs. Bad Cabbage vs. Deadmau5)
– Los Angeles
Bootie LA’s resident DJ Paul V. produces a track perfect for our Electro-Bootie room, combining three tracks into a sexy, dirty come-on of a dance-floor stormer. NSFW! But very safe for a late-night pickup.

DJ Schmolli – Ain’t Nobody Humping The Ting Tings (The Course vs. Sound On Sound Productions vs. The Ting Tings) – Vienna, Austria
For some reason, we seem to get quite a few requests for Chaka Khan — and there simply aren’t that many mashups that use the ’80s R&B singer. (Leak some studio acapellas, Chaka!) This bootleg from Schmolli doesn’t really rectify that but at least it uses a COVER of a Chaka Khan song. Paired with the latest Ting Tings single, it sounds strangely dark … yet danceable … and makes you want to belt out the song and sing along. Also, the intro is ridiculously catchy. For those that know Schmolli’s hard rockin’ metal roots, this proves why we love him — he’s not afraid to attack any genre!

Titus Jones – Good Girls Burn Miami (Sean Kingston vs. Cobra Starship vs. Lady Gaga vs. Shakira vs. LMFAO) – Clarksville, Arkansas BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
Sean Kingston and Lady Gaga both make their second appearances on this month’s Top 10, where Titus Jones takes a summer’s worth of hits and synthesizes them down into 3-1/2 minutes, seemingly proving how all the different varieties of pop songs these days (from indie to R&B to mainstream to electro) sound the same! That might make this a guilty pleasure, but it’s a well-produced track and a fun listen.

Bootie Top 10 – September 2009

Posted in Top10 on September 10th, 2009 by Adrian

It’s been two months since we last posted a Bootie Top 10, and during that time we did 14 different Bootie parties or sets, including two epic back-to-back nights in San Francisco to celebrate our 6-Year Anniversary, a week in Brazil which included Bootie Brasília and a gig in São Paulo, and another week at Burning Man, where we DJed mashups four nights in row.

So please forgive us for skipping the month of August – we were (and continue to be) utterly swamped! Hopefully our Top 10 Tribute to Michael Jackson last month helped tide you over, and this current list showcases a few older tracks from a few months ago that deserve to be spotlighted. Download and enjoy!

A Plus D – Krazy Day N Nite (Pitbull vs. Lil Jon vs. Kid Cudi vs. Crookers) – San Francisco BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
A simple floor-bangin’ A+B that we whipped up on a flight to São Paulo. Mysterious D’s been wanting to use The Crookers remix of “Day N Nite” for months, and Pitbull’s “Krazy” just seemed to be the cherry on top. So here it is, as a Bootie Exclusive!

Dunproofin’ – Groove Is In The Girls (Deee-Lite vs. The Prodigy) – Scotland
This has pretty much been a staple in our sets for the past two months, updating the classic one-hit wonder with some electro-throb courtesy of The Prodigy. It takes Deee-Lite from “light n’ airy” to “dark n’ dirty.” The song arrangement tweaks on this make it especially awesome.

DJ Fox – Hot Birthday Stuff (Jeremih vs. Boys From Brazil) – San Francisco
Sounding like Jimmy Somerville covering Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff”, the Boys From Brazil (who are are actually from Germany) give the song-of-the-moment “Birthday Sex” some trashy Euro-pop flava. Another nice one from one of our favorite producers from SF, DJ Fox. Yes, it’s hot stuff.

Lasso The Moon – Spaceman On Fire (Bang A Gong) (Kings of Leon vs. T. Rex vs. The Killers) – Indianapolis
Three distinctive brands of rock collide in this exceptionally well-crafted mashup, blending the early ’70s glam of T. Rex with the more contemporary rock stylings of The Killers (modern new wave pop posing as Americana) and Kings of Leon (Americana posing as epic arena rock). Nicely layered to form such a natural fit!

Lobsterdust – CalabriHorse Tonite (Enur vs. Laid Back vs. INXS vs. Kid Cudi vs. 3OH!3 vs. Lil Jon) – New York City
Adrian can’t stand that annoyingly catchy Enur song – you know, the one with the ingratiating horn line that gets stuck in your head like glue. But there’s no denying its dance-floor appeal – especially when mashed up with five other songs, all effortlessly blended together by a master mashup craftsman such as DJ Lobsterdust.

Mad Mix Mustang – I Got More Than A Feeling (Boston vs. Black Eyed Peas) – The Netherlands
This was pretty much our camp’s theme song for Burning Man this year, perfectly encapsulating the rapturous, joyous, anthemic “end of summer” vibe that the event entails. After spending Burn Night driving around the playa in the SlugCar, creating impromptu Bootie BRC parties along the way, we rode through Black Rock City as the sky began to get light. And just as the sun was rising over the mountains, we blasted this at top volume. It was a gloriously magical moment that we’ll cherish forever. Epic, beautiful, perfect.

DJ Magnet – Girls On Film Freak Out (Duran Duran vs. Chic vs. Beastie Boys) – Denver
This mashup came out about five months ago, and lo and behold, on Duran Duran’s current summer tour, the band has taken to playing Chic’s “Le Freak” during their live version of “Girls on Film.” Coincidence or idea biting? You decide! Either way, this one is super funky and for the dance floor!

DJ Schmolli – Bulletproof Radar (La Roux vs. Britney Spears) – Vienna, Austria
In Schmolli’s own words: “So these are both the brand new singles of La Roux (”Bulletproof”) and Britney Spears (”Radar”). Both do pop music but in a very different way.” We’ve been loving the electro-pop of La Roux, and let’s face it, Britney’s producers are seriously trying to make her sound more “electro-cool,” so this mashup ends up pitting the genuine article against the wannabe. This is taken from AudioPorn Central’s 2nd anniversary album.

Torero – Pretty Vain Rocker (The Offspring vs. Culture Beat vs. Alter Ego) – Germany
Our trip to Brazil was fascinating, not the least of which was discovering which songs were “big hits” at the clubs. Imagine our surprise when we heard The Offspring played at A Loca, an infamous São Paulo gay club. Brazilians may not know a ton of English, but they somehow knew ALL the words to “Pretty Fly For A White Guy.” Bizarre! So of course, we just had to drop this when we gigged there a few nights later, a mashup custom-created by Torero when he played Bootie Munich back in January.

DJ Zebra – With A Little Help From Soulwax (Joe Cocker vs. Queen vs. Soulwax) – Paris
A few weeks ago was the 40th anniversary of the Woodstock festival, and to celebrate, DJ Zebra played a special show at Bootie in San Francisco called Bootstock Live, based on the Woodstock mashup album he produced and released in July. This is far and away our favorite track from the album – and was another one of our “theme songs” at Burning Man – an epic, jubilant stormer that gets off to a slow start, but by the end has everybody screaming.

Bootie Top 10 – July 2009

Right-click to get to download!

Clive$ter – Rock This Night (The Eagles vs. Dimitri From Paris) – Vienna, Austria
The Eagles hit the dance floor and get an electro makeover, as Austria’s Clive$ter transforms this classic rock staple into an unlikely dance floor stormer!

g4gorilla – Not Farewell (Lily Allen vs. White Lies vs. Salt-N-Pepa) – Newcastle, Australia
We couldn’t have said it better than g4gorilla himself: “Post-punk band-of-the-moment White Lies joins Lily Allen in her continuing search for consonants and the balance between love, security, and sexual gratification. Salt-n-Pepa have no such problems, and they make a cameo appearance to tell Ms. Allen it’s all about the mattress mambo.”

Jimmylin – Boom Boom Pow In Miami Bitch (Black Eyed Peas vs. LMFAO) – Los Angeles
If only the Black Eyed Peas had let LMFAO remix their big summertime hit (instead of David Guetta) it might have sounded something like this. Will.i.am’s pop instincts prevent him from giving the Peas this sort of heavy electro bass throb, but we think it’s perfect for Electro-Bootie.

Lasso The Moon – Religion In The Wind (R.E.M. vs. Kansas)
– Indianapolis
An utterly gorgeous mashup, simply perfect in its melancholic beauty. With its unconventional arrangement, “Losing My Religion” is hardly the easiest song to work with, yet Lasso The Moon subtlely shifts the timing – and adds some well-placed additional beats – to lock in with the original Kansas song, creating a minor-key masterpiece.

DJ Lobsterdust – Hot Maus (Van Halen vs. Deadmau5) – New York City
Of all the Deadmau5 mashups making the rounds – their “Ghosts n Stuff” has become a bootlegger favorite – this is the one we keep coming back to. Hearing David Lee Roth’s campy lyrics sung over something so current and cool is the sort of genre-clash we love. And Lobsta’s great production skillz don’t hurt!

Mad Mix Mustang – I’m Not A Creep (Radiohead vs. Calvin Harris) – The Netherlands
Here, the genre-clash works in the opposite direction. Take a well-loved vocal from a much-respected band, and turn it into a cheesy Eurodance anthem! Hey, Thom Yorke hates “Creep” anyway, so why not? It’s all about the wailing “Thom Yorke howl goes house music” chorus!

Mighty Mike – Human In St. Petersburg (The Killers vs. Supergrass) – France
When you play this early in the night and DJ Earworm runs over to find out what it is, you know you’ve got something good. Here, that insufferable song by The Killers is made tolerable by turning it into a shuffling, swinging “Tin Pan Alley” piano ballad.

Party Ben – Machine Gun Shelter (The Rolling Stones vs. The Commodores) – San Francisco
Readers of this Top 10 blog already know that “Gimme Shelter,” with its dark tone and subject matter, is possibly our favorite Stones song. So what do we have here? A mashup that practically “funks away” all the darkness out of the original, turning it into a soulful dance number that we still love!

DJ Riko – Happy When I Get It In (50 Cent vs. Royksopp) – San Diego
Royksopp’s new single gets the inevitable rap treatment. Well, what do you expect when it’s got the perfect hip-hop tempo? 50 Cent sounds particularly well-suited here, rapping smoothly and seamlessly over the beats of the Norwegian electronic duo.

DJ Y Alias JY – Finally Don’t (Let) Go (Salt-N-Pepa vs. CeCe Peniston vs. Yaz vs. Yo Majesty) – Munich, Germany
A dance floor starter to be sure, courtesy of Bootie Munich’s secret weapon, resident DJ Y Alias JY. Interweaving several different female vocal tracks over the funky yet dancey Yo Majesty track, it’s a multi-layered piece of work that never loses its effortless-sounding flow. Y Alias JY’s smoove productions skills just shine on this one.

Bootie Top 10 – Tribute to Michael Jackson

Posted in Top10 on July 9th, 2009 by Adrian

In honor of the late, great King of Pop, we have assembled a Top 10 list of our all-time favorite Michael Jackson mashups, listed here in alphabetical order by bootlegger. Nine different MJ songs are represented, with the iconic “Billie Jean” pulling double-duty as both an instrumental and acapella base. It’s interesting that most of these were produced by European bootleggers, most notably Austria’s DJ Schmolli, who produced three of the mashups on this list. No wonder Michael was planning his comeback in Europe!

ComaR - I Want You D.A.N.C.E. (Justice vs. Jackson 5) – Paris

Divide & Kreate – I Told You To Beat It (Michael Jackson vs. The Hives) – Stockholm, Sweden

Divide & Kreate - Illiterate City (Jackson 5 vs. Guns N’ Roses) – Stockholm, Sweden

DJ Jay-R – Michael Remembers Cheryl (Michael Jackson vs. Cheryl Lynn) – San Francisco

Loo & Placido – Should I Stay Or Should I Boogie (Michael Jackson vs. The Clash) – Paris

McSleazy – Smells Like Billie Jean (Michael Jackson vs. Nirvana) – Glasgow, Scotland

DJ Schmolli – Hollaback Thriller Girl (Gwen Stefani vs. Michael Jackson) – Vienna, Austria

DJ Schmolli – Jacko Breaks Free On Earth (Michael Jackson vs. Queen vs. Belinda Carlisle) – Vienna, Austria

DJ Schmolli – Justice For Billie Jean (Justice vs. Michael Jackson vs. C&C Music Factory) – Vienna, Austria

Unknown – Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough Q-Tip (Q-Tip vs. Michael Jackson)

Bootie Top 10 – June 2009

A Plus D – Stanky Whip (GS Boyz vs. Devo) – San Francisco
This utterly ridiculous rap is getting a bunch of airplay and tons of kids on YouTube have already made their own “Stanky Legg” dance videos. You can tell the Dallas-based GS Boyz want so badly for this to be the next Soulja Boy-style dance sensation. All we know is, it sure sounds better with Devo!

Daw-Gun – Don’t You Forget American Boy (Estelle vs. Kanye West vs. Simple Minds) – New York City
Stretching the shelf life of “American Boy” just a LITTLE bit longer, this mashup brings back a gem of an ’80s song that everyone forgot how much they loved. We didn’t realize it either until we watched an entire dance floor at Bootie shout out, “Hey, hey, hey, hey!”

Dunproofin – Lily & the Robot (Lily Allen vs. Röyksopp vs. Robyn) – Scotland
Dun might call this one “a quickie,” but sometimes when a bootleg comes together quickly, it’s simply because it just WORKS. Lily Allen sounds shockingly awesome fronting the electro-dance throb of Rökysopp, and dueting with Robyn takes it up another notch. Well spotted!

DJ Earworm – Heartless (In A Bottle) (The Fray vs. Black Eyed Peas vs. The Police vs. 2Pac vs. Alan Parsons Project) – San Francisco
The bootleg scene’s resident mashup genius is back with another multi-layered, multi-faceted production, using The Fray’s cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless” as a base, then interweaving several other elements. It’s slow and melancholy and utterly gorgeous.

Elocnep – I Believe It’s Not Fair (The Darkness vs. Lily Allen) – France
We love it when a bootlegger we’ve never heard of comes out of nowhere with something as cheeky and wonderful as this. Newcomer Elconep pairs the over-the-top falsetto vocals of The Darkness with a galloping spaghetti western instrumental — which is, interestingly enough, from the same Lily Allen song above that Dunproofin took his vocals from. Totally unexpected and inspired!

g4gorilla – I Wanna Dance With One Of These On My Mind (Pet Shop Boys vs. Whitney Houston vs. Eagles) – Newcastle, Australia
Well, it IS Gay Pride month here in San Francisco (and LA and NYC). So we gotta represent! The Eagles have never sounded so gay! “Comin’ up behind you, one of these nights” takes on a whole NEW meaning in THIS context! And the Pet Shop Boys and Whitney Houston together up the gay icon ante!

Immuzikation – Help, I’m Alive (Immuzikation B-ting Like a Hammer Remix) (Metric vs. Immuzikation) – Athens, Georgia
It’s our token “Electro-Bootie” track on the Top 10, a bootleg remix of the first single from Canadian indie band Metric’s new album, courtesy of Immuzikation, our favorite remixer from Georgia. It’s an awesome song to begin with, and we are loving this version because it gets it ready for the dance floor.

Mighty Mike – Fall Out Gloria (Fall Out Boy vs. Gloria Gaynor) – France
Part of the reason we love mashups is that, in the hands of the right producer, a song you just can’t stand can magically get turned into something listenable. That’s exactly what Mighty Mike has done with Fall Out Boy, giving them a ’70s disco makeover that sounds shockingly suitable!

Winkar Lopez – So Fine In The Sun (Mary J. Blige vs. Weezer) – Mexico City
This is such a sunny, seamless combination, that if you weren’t familiar with either song, you would probably mistake this for an original song from a band with two vocalists, one an R&B singer, and the other a guitarist who writes all the songs and insists on singing on the choruses.

World Famous Audio Hacker – If U Seek Lucretia (Britney Spears vs. The Sisters of Mercy) – Portland
Our goth roots are showing again. How could anyone possibly make Britney sound kinda dark and cool? Well, pairing her with a classic Sisters of Mercy song is a start. But it’s WFAH’s additional beats and production that really elevate this, giving Britney an edge that she (or rather, her producers) never even dream of.

ABX of The Hood Internet - 1000 Times Right Round (Flo-Rida vs. MSTRKRFT)
- Chicago
It’s been a while since we’ve featured anything from The Hood Internet, but ABX knocks it out of the park with this one, blowing up the blogosphere with this dance floor stormer, where MSTRKFRT’s buzzsaw electro seems to suit Flo-Rida’s remake of “You Spin Me Round” much better than his own hip-hop instrumentation, and brings something new to both tracks, making an unbeatable Electro-Bootie hit.

Aggro1 – You Know You’re Blue (Nirvana vs. Blue Stahli) - Dayton, Ohio
Last month marked the 15-year anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s tragic suicide, so it seems perfect timing for Ohio’s best bootlegger to take one of Nirvana’s last recorded songs and to make it even darker and more depressing than it already was. We hate to say it, but this mashup just screams suicide. It’s dark, it’s haunting, it’s depressing as hell, but powerful.

Amoraboy – The Twist of Single Ladies (Beyoncé vs. Chubby Checker) – Toulouse, France
Nearly 50 years separate these two songs, yet they fit together like they were made for each other, turning “Single Ladies” into a doo-wop hit at a 1950s sock-hop. Can’t you just imagine the video for this, with Beyoncé in a poodle skirt doing The Twist?

Dan Mei & Marc Johnce - Chasing Cars That Way (Backstreet Boys vs. Snow Patrol) - Denmark / Germany
VIDEO: click here
We didn’t realize how many people know EVERY SINGLE WORD to this Backstreet Boys song until we played it as our last “slow dance” song at Bootie LA. We’re not sure whether this gives the Backstreet Boys a bit of indie cred, or if it just makes Snow Patrol sound cheesy. Um … both?

Faroff – House of Klezmer (House of Pain vs. Amsterdam Klezmer Band vs. Pa Brapad) – Brasilia/Cambridge
VIDEO: click here
We love fucking with our audience at Bootie, and this is one of those tracks that does exactly that, with a long intro that has the crowd scratching their heads going “WTF?” — that is, until a minute later, when “Jump Around” kicks and makes the place explode into some sort of klezmer-hip-hop freakout. And make sure you watch the video, it’s fantastic! How does someone from Brazil come up with this stuff? Did we mention that DJ Faroff is our special guest in San Francisco this month?

DJ Lobsterdust – Love City (R.E.M. vs. The Panthers vs. Holy Ghost!) – New York City
We’ve always loved this R.E.M. song and hearing it updated with some nice electronic throb and beats takes nothing away from its melancholy sentiment. It’s not exactly something you’d wanna drop in the middle of a prime-time party set, but we love its dark beauty.

Overdub – Mixed Farm (Beck vs. Rage Against The Machine) - France
This mashup feels SOOOO LA to us! Take two quintessential Angeleno artists, from opposite sides of town, and put ‘em together — somehow, it just magically works, giving Beck a much harder-rockin’ backing band, and making Rage sound more melodic than they ever have before.

Party Ben – Shame (At Nite) (Kid Cudi vs. Evelyn “Champagne” King) - San Francisco
Seems like many of the hipsters are jumping on the disco-revival bandwagon these days, so mashing up Kid Cudi with a classic disco hit not only gives everyone a bit of a musical history lesson, but also, interestingly enough, sounds fresh and contemporary — even despite that saxophone!

Titus Jones – A Circus of Heartbreakin’ Divas (Pat Benatar vs. Beyoncé vs. 3OH!3 vs. Britney Spears vs. Christina Aguilera vs. M.I.A.) - Arkansas
Our favorite bootlegger from Arkansas returns with a sonic stew featuring five dueling divas from different decades, along with “peanut gallery” input from hot new band 3OH!3. We’ve been waiting for years for something good to be mashed up with Pat Benatar’s classic “Heartbreaker” (it’s Adrian’s fave karaoke song!) and here, Titus Jones delivers.

DJ Topcat – Boyz Slumdog (M.I.A. vs. A.R. Rahman) - Seattle
This mashup was just MEANT to be. How perfect is it to pair the Sri Lankan M.I.A.’s vocals with A.R. Rahman’s Indian soundtrack music from “Slumdog Millionaire?” We love giving a little Bollywood flavor to the dance floor!

Bootie Top 10 – April 2009

Posted in Top10 on April 20th, 2009 by Adrian

After doing Bootie parties in China and Australia last month, we fell a little behind in updating our Bootie Top 10. But here’s a fresh batch of bootlegs for your downloading pleasure…

DJ BC - Shorty Shutup (The Ting Tings vs. Busta Rhymes vs. The Zombies vs. Marvin Gaye) - Boston
Sick of this Ting Tings song yet? Not us! In the mashup world, “Shut Up And Let Me Go” has become somewhat of an overused cliché, yet many bootleggers are still mining gold from this nugget, as Bootie Boston’s DJ BC does here — still guaranteed to kick-start a dance floor!

TWO-FOR-ONE SPECIAL!
Dan Mei & Marc Johnce – My Life On The Crazy Train Sucks (So What?) (Kelly Clarkson vs. Ozzy Osbourne vs. Pink vs. Daft Punk) – Denmark / Germany
g4gorilla – I Will Always Suck To Me (Kelly Clarkson vs. Charlene vs. Whitney Houston) – Newcastle, Australia
Here are two different takes on mashing up the newest Kelly Clarkson single — the first is a guilty pleasure, the second is an even GUILTIER (and gloriously gayer) pleasure. While it’s not much of a stretch to pair two pop princesses together on the choruses, the appearance of Ozzy on the verses really make this first version shine. And the second one is a gay diva trifecta; it’s easily the campiest mashup we’ve heard in a long time. In other words, it’s a Bootie Midnight Mashup Show just waiting to happen!

Hi-Brid – Human Dream (Human League vs. Empire of the Sun) - London
Empire of the Sun is an Australian duo obviously heavily influenced by the ’80s — so why not show where their influences come from by mashing them up with one of the most quintessential ’80s bands, The Human League. “Human” is somewhat of a forgotten gem, so it’s nice to hear it again in this new context.

Loo & Placido – Betty Got Jacked (Ram Jam vs. Herve vs. Kanye West vs. Boys Noize. vs HitHouse. vs. C&C Music Factory) - France
French bootleggers Loo & Placido take the basic concept of Torero’s mashup classic “Gonna Make Betty Sweat,” and jack it up considerably, adding a bunch of other elements, and giving it a much-welcome electro-house makeover with a little Kanye thrown in for good measure, among other things. Consider this our token “Electro-Bootie” track for this month’s Top 10. This track is super-hot, and we’ve noticed it making its way to dancefloors, iPods and radio stations all over the world.

Mad Mix Mustang – Like A Life On A Prayer (Bon Jovi vs. Nina Simone vs. Madonna) – The Netherlands
Mad Mix Mustang is one of our new favorite bootleggers, and his clever work continues to surprise us. Here’s another strikingly genre-clashed track from him that somehow, inexplicably, just WORKS. Soul vs. pop metal? Who would have thought? Brings a smile to our faces every time.

Mighty Mike – Use The Same Old Song (The Four Tops vs. Kings of Leon) - France
Mighty Mike is another relatively new bootlegger whose recent work just keeps delivering the mashup surprises. Kings of Leon’s anthemic rock gets a soulful twist courtesy of the Four Tops, proving quite literally that with mashups, nearly everything is “the same old song.”

DJ Moule – Hey, C La Vie (The Pixies vs. M. Solveig vs. The Hives vs. Peter, Bjorn & John) – Bordeaux, France
Yay! Any excuse for us to play some Pixies for the dance floor! Besides, the world needs more Pixies mashups! The electro groove throbs nicely, and the little “Young Folks” bit near the end is simply the cherry on top of this fantastic bootleg. And the best part: the ever-flowing “Woo!’ courtesy of The Hives.

DJ Schmolli – In-A-Gadda-Blue-Monday (Iron Butterfly vs. New Order) - Vienna, Austria BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
The world wasn’t exactly in need of another “Blue Monday” mashup — but it’s practically a rite of passage for every bootlegger to make their own version of this dance floor staple, and here, Bootie Munich’s DJ Schmolli goes above and beyond with an unexpected pairing that somehow turns the psychedelic classic “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” into a dance song.

team9 – Good After Time (Lykke Li vs. Cyndi Lauper) - Perth, Australia
Stereogum’s go-to bootleg producer, team9, is threatening to quit making mashup — and that makes Bootie sad, especially after hearing excellent tracks such as this, which helped introduce us to the angelic vocal stylings of Lykke Li. Come on, team9! Never say never! Still, if this is his swan song, it’s a lovely way to leave us.

10000 Spoons – Precious Bleeding Love (Leona Lewis vs. Depeche Mode) – Kent, UK
Seeing as that this came out nearly nine months ago, this is what we would call a “sleeper hit,” a track that has been slowly growing on us over time, and now we can’t believe we never included it in our Top 10. Leona Lewis’ pleading vocal is a perfect fit with the melancholy electro-somber of Depeche Mode. Better late than never, right?

Bootie Top 10 – March 2009

Posted in Top10 on March 11th, 2009 by Adrian

9freak9 – Dance Wif Ur Hands In The Ayer (Flo-Rida vs. Chemical Brothers vs. Tag Team vs. LMFAO vs. Fedde Le Grand) – Australia
This track has been Mysterious D’s “secret weapon” at Bootie for a few months now. Combining several “put your hands up in the air” refrains from a few different songs, along with an infectious dance groove, this is guaranteed to kick your party up a notch and have those hands in the AYER!

Copycat – Blind Esmeralda (Hercules & Love Affair feat. Antony Hegarty vs. Santa Esmeralda) – Sweden
“Ethereal flamenco disco” is perhaps the best way to describe this, with each element brought to the table by a different artist. Antony Hegarty’s dreamy vocal flows wonderfully with Hercules & Love Affair’s disco instrumentation, but it’s the addition of Santa Esmeralda’s horn-packed, over-the-top, ’70s cover of “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (from the movie “Kill Bill”) that makes this mashup pure heaven.

Faroff – Funky Shack! (Lipps Inc. vs. The B-52’s vs. Soulwax vs. Patrick Hernandez vs. Yello) – Boston / Brasilia
Faroff is a Brazilian bootlegger currently living in Boston, and as a regular DJ at Bootie Boston, he’s really stepped up his mashup game, as this track amply proves. This is a perfect retro blend of ’70s vs. ’80s, taking two of the best party jams from each decade and placing it on top of the very ’00s Soulwax throbbing groove, and spinning it into dance floor gold.

G3rst – Bloom To Me (Nirvana vs. Koop) – The Netherlands
This one took a while to grow on us … it’s such a radical reworking of Nirvana, that we weren’t sure what to think of it at first. But taking Kurt Cobain’s vocal and meshing it with the jazzy lounge stylings of Sweden’s Koop takes some nerve, and the result is a kooky and inspired take on a ’90s classic. This is now Mysterious D’s jam, and the Bootie audiences seem to love making up swing-style dances to it.

Lock3down – Gorilla Idol (Gorillaz vs. Billy Idol) – Toronto
We’d almost forgotten about this ’80s chestnut, until Lock3down ingeniously updated it with a Gorillaz vocal. The real payoff though comes three-quarters in, when Del tha Funkee Homosapien starts rapping over Steve Stevens’s blistering guitar solo. Just a fantastic pairing!

Mighty Mike – The Complicated Scientist (Avril Lavigne vs. Coldplay) – France
A guilty pleasure, to be sure, this has been Adrian’s cheesy, over-dramatic “end of the night” song for a few months now. It’s utterly shocking to us how many drunk people seem to know the words to this horrendous-yet-strangely-catchy Avril Lavigne song! And somehow, mashing it up with Coldplay almost disguises it’s awfulness!

DJ not-I – More Cowbell! (Sisters of Mercy vs. NAPT) – Vienna, Austria
Yeah, yeah, we know our goth roots are showing on this one. This Sisters of Mercy darkwave classic gets a electro dance floor makeover – and with the anachronistic assistance of Christopher “More Cowbell!” Walken, it keeps a firm smile on our faces while spooky dancing. In fact, we’ve been told this track has been thown into rotation by DJs at some of our local industrial clubs, like Meat.

Party Ben – Live Your Life Punk (T.I. vs. Rihanna vs. Vampire Weekend) – San Francisco
We’re not huge fans of the preppy college rock of Vampire Weekend, but somehow – shockingly – Party Ben has made them tolerable with the addition of T.I. and Rihanna. Maybe it’s because he’s replaced most of their vocals with the “heys” and “hos” of T.I., which work better for us than the yelped “hey hey hey” of New York’s most over-hyped band.

KINGS OF LEON 2-FOR-1 SPECIAL!
Tone396 – Fire In A Bottle (The Police vs. Kings of Leon) – UK
DJ Rodeo – Knocked Up (Lykke Li vs. Kings of Leon)
It wasn’t until we dropped Tone396’s effortless “Fire In A Bottle” at a Bootie LA party that we realized just how HUGE the Kings of Leon have become. Sure, The Police acapellas are starting to sound a little overused in the mashup world, but this just WORKS. For the second track, DJ Rodeo’s mysterious mashup takes Lykke Li’s cover of “Knocked Up” and makes it sound like KOL singer Caleb Followill is doing backup vocals for HER! It’s dark and ghostly, yet beautiful, putting shivers down your spine.

DJ Y Alias JY – Shut Up And Take Me Out (The Ting Tings vs. Franz Ferdinand vs. Aretha Franklin vs. M/A/R/R/S) – Munich, Germany
Take two of the most danceable indie rock songs from the past few years and put them together – how could this NOT work? Sprinkle in some Aretha and “Pump Up The Volume” for some spice, and you’ve got another mashup stormer, courtesy of one of Bootie Munich’s resident DJs! This track is made for FUN on the dance floor.

Bootie Top 10 – February 2009

Posted in Top10 on February 2nd, 2009 by Adrian

After December’s double dose of Top 10 lists, and January’s Best of Bootie 2008 CD, we decided to skip a month. But now it’s February, and we’re back with a fresh batch of hot mashups, for your downloading pleasure. Here’s what’s been burning up the Bootie dance floor this past month, listed in alphabetical order by bootlegger:

A Plus D – Stardust Kids (David Bowie vs. MGMT) – San Francisco
From the Ziggy Stardust Remixed bootleg album
Indie-glam? When DJ BC contacted us to contribute a mashup to the upcoming Ziggy Stardust Remixed album, we jumped at the chance. After all, David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust is one of our all-time favorite albums, and no one had claimed “Lady Stardust” for the mashing. So we took the glam rock ballad and turned it into an indie-pop dance track using current fave MGMT, and the two songs fit together like a velvet glove.

Aggro1 – Does Alice in Chains Offend You? (Alice In Chains vs. Does It Offend You, Yeah?) – Dayton, Ohio
This is the sound of a bootlegger coming into their own, finding their unique style, and putting their own indelible stamp on mashup culture. Without even looking at the ID3 tags, you can just TELL it’s an Aggro1 tune, matching hard rock vocals with equally hard electronic music, and creating a new sort of hybrid “electro-metal.” However the song arrangement still brings in a dance groove during the verses, which offsets the hard choruses gorgeously. Aggro’s been honing this particular sound for a while now, but on this track, he just NAILS it. It sounds big and well-produced and, quite simply, awesome.

DJ BC – I’m Too XXXy (Right Said Fred vs. Proof vs. DJ Assault vs. 20 Fingers)
– Boston BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
Everyone loves naughty lyrics on the dance floor, and this exclusive track from Bootie Boston’s DJ BC delivers, taking four songs chock full of cheeky, over-the-top sexual references, and combining them into a sexy stew that is sure to inspire drunken dirty dancing!

Celebrity Murder Party – Blue Rinse (Fab Zero mix) (Rose Royce vs. New Order vs. Lipps Inc.) - London
This mashup came out nearly 10 months ago, but somehow – DOH! – we missed it. Which is why we loved combing through everyone’s year-end “Top Mashups of 2008″ lists, to see if we missed anything … like this one! Not that the world really needed another “Blue Monday” mashup, but when it’s ingeniously paired with a ’70s disco classic, it again breathes new life. And the Bootie dance floor agrees!

DJ Earworm - United State of Pop 2008 (Mashup of Billboard’s Top 25 songs of 2008) – San Francisco
After the success of last year’s “United State of Pop” (which took the Top 25 songs of the year according to Billboard magazine and mashed them together into one seamless 4-minute pop song) DJ Earworm seems to have found his true calling and has already turned the clever concept into an annual tradition. This year’s edition is no less ambitious and dense – with Billboard’s Top 25 songs of 2008 paired with Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” as the backing track, the whole thing is given an epic, anthemic quality.

TWO FOR ONE SPECIAL!
DJ Fox - Beggin’ Gypsy Woman (Crystal Waters vs. Madcon vs. Aaliyah vs. The Police) – San Francisco
Mighty Mike – Beggin’ For Glory (Portishead vs. Madcon) - France
Back in December, we introduced Madcon’s “Beggin’” to the Bootie Top 10 with, not one, but two different mashups that used the Norwegian band’s breakout song as its backing track. Well, go ahead and add two more Madcon mashups to the pile. Here’s another “compare-and-contrast,” where both mashups are so well done, we couldn’t pick just one! Each has it’s own unique flavor: Fox’s “Beggin’ Gypsy Woman” showcases the Crystal Waters classic and actually tells a story through the mashing of multiple songs. The greatness of Mighty Mike’s “Beggin’ For Glory” comes from the rarely-mashed melancholy vocals of Portishead.

DJ Gauffie – Living On Mercy (Duffy vs. Trans-X) - Sweden
We’ve been waiting for a good mashup that uses Duffy’s “Mercy” vocals, and now that the acapella has been leaked, the tracks are starting to trickle in. This is far and away our favorite so far, pairing the ’60s-sounding Duffy with the ’80s one-hit wonder Trans-X, turning her soulful number into an electro-pop dance floor stormer!

DJ Lobsterdust – American Justice (The Guess Who vs. MSTRKRFT vs. Nate Dogg) – New York City
More electro goodness, courtesy of our favorite New York City bootlegger. By layering classic rock vocals over a throbbing hard dance track, we’re reminded a little of Aggro1 here. But with the addition of Nate Dogg’s rap, and creative arrangement, he definitely adds his own mashup stamp to the proceedings, producing a fantastic track perfect for Electro-Bootie.

Mastgrr – Cooking By The Book (A Lil’ Bigger Mix) (Lil’ Wayne vs. Lazy Town) – New York City
BONUS VIDEO:

Cooking By The Book video – HatPerson

It’s really all about the video, which was an giant internet meme sensation about two months ago. But even without it, this short-but-sweet mashup – which pairs the obnoxiously obscene Lil’ Jon with a song from the kids’ television show Lazy Town – still makes us feel kinda dirty. Yes, this is ALL kinds of wrong … but for some reason, we couldn’t help but watch it over and over again, or sing it to each other constantly! “It’s a piece of cake to make a pretty cake … WHAT? OKAAAY!”

team9 – B.F. Meets T.I. (T.I. vs. Ben Folds feat. Regina Spektor) – Perth, Australia
This is the first appearance in the Bootie Top 10 of what will undoubtedly be several tracks from MySplice III, team9’s third annual mashup compilation which he does at the end of every year for the music blog Stereogum. We love Regina Spektor, so to hear the unlikely (yet surprisingly complimentary) lyrical interplay between her and rapper T.I. was inspired to say the least. This is exactly the kind of genre-clash that we look for in hip-hop mashups!

Bootie Top 20 – December 2008

Posted in Top10 on December 12th, 2008 by Adrian

The past two months have been good for the bootleg scene. In other words, we couldn’t pick just ten! And since this is our last Bootie Top 10 of the year, we thought we’d share in the holiday spirit and double it up for you, including a few older tracks from 2008 that just narrowly missed the cut the first time around. So here are 20 of our current favorite mashups, listed in alphabetical order by bootlegger.

DJ Bagel – Ace of Big (Notorious B.I.G. vs. Ace of Base) – Montreal
Mashups fill our email in box nearly every day, as many budding producers and DJs send us their tracks directly. Unfortunately though, most of them suck. Current pop vs. current pop? Rap over a hip-hop beat? Wow. Clever. But every now and then, an attached MP3 (with no ID3 tags, in this case) takes us by surprise. Sure, this may just be a simple A+B … but Biggie rapping with Ace of Base sure brought smiles to our faces … and you know, sometimes that’s good enough for the Top 10! We also love that he brings in Ace of Base to sing with Biggie at all the perfect intervals. It’s all about bringing that original back in as the payoff!

Brat - Easy Heaven (The Cure vs. The Commodores) – Los Angeles
This track has been Brat’s little secret for years. When he first played it at Bootie LA years ago, our jaws dropped. We had to have it. But due to some issues with the acapella, Brat felt it wasn’t ready to release. But every few months, he’d show up at Bootie LA and come up to the DJ booth with a mischievous grin on his face … and we would know that he had brought it so we could at least play it that night! It’s one of the best “last song” mashups EVER. We are so glad he’s finally been able to put this out there for everyone to enjoy.

Clivester – Funky Touch (Bella Love vs. Soulwax vs. Lipps Inc.) – Vienna, Austria
We weren’t familiar with MySpace star Bella Love, but we fell in love with her vocal immediately. Here, Clivester cleverly mashes up a mashup, dropping her sexy vocals into a bootleg of Soulwax vs. the classic “Funkytown.” The more we’ve been spinning this, the more we’ve loved it. Dirty dance floor fun!

Divide & Kreate – Party Kisser (Katy Perry vs. Bloc Party) – Stockholm, Sweden
“I Kissed A Girl” had to be one of the most mashed up songs of the past year. The only problem was that nearly ALL of them kinda sucked. There’s just something about the vocal (especially the melody change from the verse to the chorus) that made it difficult to mash up well with other songs. Of all the Katy Perry boots out there, we thought that this one sounded the best. And it just felt wrong to get to the end of the year without at least recognizing the most over-played song of 2008!

Dunproofin’ – Bootie Call (Blondie vs. Dragonette) – Scotland
Blondie’s classic gets a contemporary electro rock update. And no, we didn’t pick this for the Top 10 just because Dunproofin name-dropped our club name in the title! It’s a kick-ass track that has turned us on to a new band, Dragonette.

Earworm - If I Were A Free Fallin’ Boy (Beyoncé vs. Tom Petty) – San Franicsco
We’ve always had a soft spot for “Free Fallin,” our favorite song Tom Petty song ever. Hearing him brought into this decade by forcing him to do a duet with Beyoncé is just brilliant. It seems like Earworm, master of the multi-layered mashup, is rediscovering the graceful simplicity of a clever, well-crafted A+B.

Electrosound – Salmon Rehab (Chemical Brothers vs. Amy Winehouse) – France
“Salmon Dance” is such a silly novelty tune, but here, it works seamlessly with Amy Winehouse’s retro-’60s soul, making for an interesting genre-clash that never sounds forced.

The Illuminoids - Suffragette City (The Illuminoids Remix) (David Bowie vs. The Illuminoids) - Los Angeles
Seems like we always have to have at least one “Electro-Bootie” bootleg remix in the Bootie Top 10, and this month, The Illuminoids deliver an absolutely slammin’ electro version of Bowie’s glam classic. Oddly enough, Ziggy Stardust sounds particularly well-suited to the “future-is-now” buzzsaw electronics. We love it when classics like this get updated in ways the original artist never intended.

Immuzikation – Columbian Cartel (MGMT vs. The Ting Tings) – Athens, Georgia
Indie hipsters rejoice! Immuzikation has made a name for himself in the blogosphere for his “blends” (what people afraid of the word “mashup” call mashups). His specialty is mashing up indie bands of the moment, and here, he takes three Ting Tings songs and two MGMT songs (and none of them are the hits) and turns them into something that sounds so very “NOW.”

Lock3down – Some Like It Hot and Heavy (The Power Station vs. Does It Offend You, Yeah? - Toronto
Speaking of songs (and bands) so very “NOW” … here we have indie darlings Does It Offend You, Yeah getting schooled on which ’80s song they inadvertently (and probably unknowingly) ripped off. The dodgy Power Station acapella extraction only adds to the low-fi “distorted coolness” of the track.

Marc Johnce – Hot N Cold Maniac (Bootie edit) (Katy Perry vs. Michael Sembello) – Germany
More ’80s retro fun, paired up with the latest Katy Perry song that we’re not sick of … yet. In our heads, we picture Katy Perry in a ripped sweatshirt, doing “Flashdance” dances every time we hear this song. We even tossed in a little of the original Michael Sembello vocal for a nice little call-and-response for this “Bootie edit.”

TWO FOR ONE “RICKROLLING” SPECIAL!
Mad Mix Mustang – Don’t You Ever Give Up Wanting Me Baby (Rick Astley vs. Human League) – The Netherlands
Mighty Mike – Neverending (Rick Astley vs. Mika) – Paris
The Bootie Top 10 has finally been RICKROLLED! Ever since we first heard the Rick Astley acapella had been leaked, we’ve been waiting for him to show up here. Sure, now that Rick Astley himself has Rickrolled the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, we’re sure the Rickroll phenomenon has officially jumped the shark. But still, we couldn’t get through 2008 without not one, but two options: The first track is perfect for Rickrolling a packed dance floor. The second is for the end of the night when everyone’s good and drunk!

DJ Moule - Fa Fa Fa Good (James Brown vs. Beatles vs. Datarock) – Bordeaux, France
James Brown as a indie rocker? It’s hard not to like James Brown’s funky vocal … hell, and it even holds its own paired up with Norwegian dance rockers Datarock. Throw in some Beatles and you’ve got another wonderful decades-spanning mashup courtesy of classic rock and soul-loving Moule.

Party Ben - Single Ladies (In Mayberry) (Beyoncé vs. “The Andy Griffith Show” Theme) - San Francisco
After nearly a year-long detour into B-more house and remixes, Party Ben makes a much welcome return to the world of mashup making with a silly – yet insanely infectious – bootleg that reaffirms his standing as a master of the craft. Cheeky and totally fun. Welcome back, Ben!

DJ Schmolli – Wicked Wedding (Billy Idol vs. Chris Isaak) - Vienna, Austria
Bootie Munich’s resident DJ places Billy Idol’s classic anti-wedding ode in a much more melancholic musical setting. In the process, Schmolli recontextualizes the song to more accurately reflect the cynical lyrical content (believe it or not, Billy was NOT in favor of marriage in this song, a fact lost on any couple who requests this at their own wedding!)

HOLIDAY MASHUP!
Smash-Up Derby – Christmas Bop (The Ramones vs. three Christmas songs) – San Francisco
As the house band at Bootie in San Francisco, Smash-Up Derby has been playing live rock mashups since 2004. This song has been a part of the band’s Christmas repertoire since 2006, when they first played it at the Bootie Holiday Party. They finally got around to recording it this year, and it’s the first track on Santastic 4, the annual holiday mashup compilation.

Totom – Every Kind Of Creep (Zebra remix) (Radiohead vs. Robert Palmer) - France
You’d never think Radiohead could sound this SMOOVE. It makes Thom Yorke sound kinda smarmy, especially with that ’70s bass, the chicka-chicka guitar, and the steel drums … like somehow he’s found himself in a fancy tropical resort hotel bar, sipping a fruity drink, and hitting on every lady that walks by and, well … being a creep! Gives this song a COMPLETELY different feel, which is what a good mashup SHOULD do!

TWO FOR ONE SPECIAL!
DJ Y Alias JY – Can’t Stand Beggin’ (The Police vs. Madcon) – Munich
DJ Zebra – Back to Beg (Amy Winehouse vs. Madcon) – Paris
After hearing this “Beggin” song in a recent Adidas commercial, we were like, “Where have we heard this song before?” Oh yeah, from mashups made by two of our DJ friends in Europe, where this Frankie Valli cover by Norwegian hip-hop band Madcon was a HUGE hit. It’s about to be released here in the U.S., but why not hear it mashed up two different ways, like we did? The first one with The Police is a nice genre clash that works beautifully, and the second one with Amy Winehouse sounds so seamless that we weren’t even convinced it was even a mashup when we first heard it!

Bootie Top 10 – November 2008

Posted in Top10 on November 10th, 2008 by Adrian

ABX of The Hood Internet – Glass Eye Of The Candy Tiger (Survivor vs. Glass Candy) – Chicago BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
When ABX from The Hood Internet dropped this at our first Bootie Chicago party a couple weeks ago, we both made a mad dash for the DJ booth to find out what it was. While the iconic music from “Eye Of The Tiger” has been used in several mashups, this is the first time we’ve heard the vocal used … and it sounds slightly less cheesy when used over the icy cool electro of Glass Candy.

Clive$ter – Downtown Murder (Petula Clark vs. Sophie Ellis Bextor) – Vienna, Austria
It’s not often a song as old as “Downtown” gets mashed up, but here it gets a much-needed dance floor remake, courtesy of Mashup Industries’ Clive$ter, who skillfully gets these two British songstresses from different generations to sound like they’re collaborating on a duet together. This track has a really warm vibe and just screams ‘happy.’

Earworm – Reckoner Lowdown (Kanye West vs. Radiohead) - San Francisco
It’s rare for Earworm – the king of complex, multi-layered productions – to produce a simple “A+B”-style mashup. But here, the pairing simply works, and with DJ Earworm’s touch it works beautifully, creating a moody take on Kanye’s new single.

DJ Gauffie – Kung Fu Dancing (Carl Douglas vs. Scissor Sisters vs. Wham!) – Sweden
A song from the ’70s, mixed with a modern song that simply SOUNDS like it’s from the ’70s. Is it any wonder this works so well together? Carl Douglas’ one-hit wonder fits like a glove while the Scissor Sisters’ work out their ’70s jones. And of course, a little Wham! thrown in for good measure is always good in our book!

Mad Mix Mustang – Take It Easy On Me (a-ha vs. The Commodores) – The Netherlands
We’re always looking for new “slow jam mashups” to close out the night at Bootie parties, and this one couldn’t be more perfect! It turns an ’80s one-hit wonder into a beautiful ballad, perfect for drunken slow dancing! “Take On Me” actually sounds less like 80’s cheese, and is really quite touching with the help of Mad Mix Mustang.

DJ Magnet – Brick Dick (Mickey Avalon vs. The Commodores vs. Beastie Boys vs. Jimi Hendrix) – Denver
Our friend (and Bootie go-go dancer) John-John has been quoting the ridiculously boastful lyrics of Mickey Avalon’s cult hit “My Dick” for months! Needless to say, he was elated when this mashup came out, meaning he can now lip-sync every word while shaking it on a go-go platform. The Commodores make a second appearance on this month’s Top 10, giving it a nice funk vibe, and DJ Magnet spices it up with just the right amount of Beasties and Hendrix for some flavor. This one is in heavy rotation for us right now.

Mash2Mix – Shut Up Your Delight (The Ting Tings vs. Sugarhill Gang vs. N.E.R.D. vs. Chic) – The Netherlands
Seemingly tailor-made for a Bootie dance floor, this track expertly mashes up the Sugarhill Gang classic (already practically a proto-mashup) with indie dance darlings The Ting Tings … and then throws in a little N.E.R.D. for good measure. Gets the kids dancin’ every time!

DJ Morsy – Lolli Lolli (DJ Morsy Remix) (Three 6 Mafia vs. DJ Morsy) - New York City
While we tend to focus on straight-up mashups in the Top 10, we also love unauthorized bootleg remixes … especially when they’re as bangin’ as this. When we play a hip-hop track at Electro-Bootie, our monthly “club-within-a-club” in San Francisco, THIS is what it sounds like. We especially love the throbbing basslines and “Halloween” piano sample used throughout, making the song sound mysteriously evil.

DJ Y Alias JY - Don’t Let It Be In Anger (Oasis vs. The Beatles) - Munich
Another fantastic “last song of the night” mashup. I mean, you know Oasis want to be the Beatles anyway … and this bootleg proves it! Bootie Munich’s resident DJ Y Alias JY totally nails it on this one. Is this the closing number at Bootie Munich? We hope so!

DJ Zebra – Roxanne Should Be Dancing (The Police vs. The Bee Gees) – Paris
DJ Zebra’s “retirement” from the bootleg scene was obviously short-lived … and bootlegs like this make us glad he’s returned to mashup-making! “Roxanne” never sounded funkier … this is a floor-filler for sure!

Bootie Top 10 – October 2008

Posted in Top10 on October 10th, 2008 by Adrian

We’re back to our regularly-scheduled Bootie Top 10 of mashup downloads. No waiting around on us for two months, just because we’re “too busy.” And as an added bonus, we’ve got three — count ‘em — THREE exclusive mashups, unavailable anywhere else. Woo-hoo!

ComaR – I Want You D.A.N.C.E. (Justice vs. Jackson 5) – Paris
An alphabet soup of a mashup! A.B.C., 1.2.3., P.Y.T., D.A.N.C.E., B.E.A.T. … we love lyrics that spell things! Both songs, separated by 38 years, share the same jubilant, fun vibe … and the joy of spelling! A wonderful pairing from Bootie Paris’s resident DJ ComaR.

Divide & Kreate – Dance Dreams (Lady Gaga vs. Eurythmics) – Stockholm, Sweden
“Sweet Dreams” just never seems to go away, and people never seem to tire of it either (perhaps because its electronic keyboard throb still sounds shockingly contemporary amongst today’s current electro-house sound). Pair it with a hot vocal from a just-breaking artist — not to mention some excellent production sheen courtesy of Divide & Kreate — and the song gets another fresh coat of paint, and brings Lady Gaga’s dance jam to life.

TWO FOR ONE SPECIAL!
Earworm – Gimme Freaks (Rolling Stones vs. Moguai & Toscadisco) – San Francisco
The Illuminoids – Gimme Shelter (Illuminoids Remix) - Los Angeles
Here, two of our favorite bootleggers mashup and remix the SAME Rolling Stones track – and “Gimme Shelter” just so happens to be our most favorite Stones song EVER. Both versions are given the electro treatment and, well … we couldn’t pick just one! So we want you to have them both. Compare and contrast!

Grandtheft – Mikey Rocks (GT’s Juke and The City Mix) (Cool Kids vs. the “Sex and the City” theme) – Montreal
Yeah, we’re suckers for that “Sex and the City” theme … especially when it’s given this kind of make-over with fresh talent The Cool Kids. No one we know of has had the idea of using the “Sex and the City” theme in a mashup, and we love a fresh idea. This track is courtesy of one of Canada’s mashup golden boys, Team Canada’s Grandtheft.

Hi-Brid – Golden Boy (Jimmy Mix) (The Klaxons vs. Bronski Beat) – London
It’s crazy how well these fit together. The Klaxons chorus just blends perfectly with the keyboards and Jimmy Somerville’s original vocal melody. It really is like they were always meant to be one. An inspired pairing and a textbook bootleg example of “well-spotted.”

Immuzikation – Whoa, Yerrr a Joke! (Santogold vs. Spank Rock vs. A-Trak) – Athens, Georgia
We’re really digging Santogold, but her original version of “Shove It” was lacking a certain “oomph.” This mashup — which admittedly, sounds more like a remix — remedies that, throwing in all sorts of interesting electro elements courtesy of hipster rappers Spank Rock and A-Trak’s remixing skills. Sure, it’s got “indie hipster” written all over it, but it works for us!

Lobsterdust – Pussycats Gone To Heaven (The Pixies vs. The Pussycat Dolls) – New York City
How many years have we been waiting for a decent Pixies mashup? Pretty much ever since we started Bootie! Finally, Lobsterdust delivers, with a masterful pairing that tricks princesses on the dance floor to shake their asses to the absurdity of the Pixies going pop … we mean, REALLY pop!

Malderor – We Rock Hard In The Ayer (Flo Rida vs. Freestyle) – San Francisco BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
Old school meets new school! This is what it would sound like if you put Flo Rida in a time machine and sent him back to 1985. He’d still be rapping, but hip-hop back then sounded more like THIS. We miss those vocoders and electro beats!

DJ Tripp – Paper Rump (Wreckx-N-Effect vs. M.I.A.) - Santa Cruz, CA BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” seems to be everywhere these days, but now we’ve got a version that takes away the seriousness of the track, and adds a dose of silly! These tracks work surprisingly well together … we particularly like the way the “zoom zoom zoom” goes perfectly with the gun shots. So wrong, and so right at the same time!

DJ Zebra – Body Crazy (Beastie Boys vs. Prince) – Paris BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
France’s DJ Zebra returns to mashup making with an exclusive party jam tailor-made just for Bootie. Two iconic artists, mashed up in a classic A+B style, and guaranteed to kick-start a dance floor and have bodies jumping.
