Best of Bootie 2011 CD released!

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on December 21st, 2011 by Adrian

This year’s annual mixtape compilation of Bootie’s biggest mashup hits is out! Consider it an early Christmas present … this is the earliest we’ve ever released a “Best of Bootie” CD!

CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE DOWNLOAD PAGE

As always, narrowing down our favorites was a difficult chore, complicated by the fact that several tracks on our list used the same source material, necessitating the need for … bonus tracks! Yes, in addition to the 21 mashups on an 80-minute CD-length mixtape, there are an additional 12 mashups for your downloading pleasure.

We have some custom edits, and three tracks are brand-new, having never been posted to our web site before, including a Bootie Exclusive from DJ Shyboy, and a year-end bonus track mashup (in the style of DJ Earworm) from Mashup-Germany, that nicely sums up the year in pop music.

There are several recurring musical motifs this year, as familiar refrains from LMFAO, Martin Solveig, Britney (and more) waft in and out of various mixes, the result of so many bootleggers mashing up multiple artists, going well beyond the classic “A+B” style of mashup production.

We think it’s a nice sum-up of the past year in mashups (as well a lot of this year’s music in general). This is pretty much the soundtrack of Bootie in 2011 – from the prime-time floor-fillers, all the way down to the closing song at last call!

And special thanks to Jason Burke from InkAndLeadDesigns.com for the cover art!

Bootie Top 15 – November 2011

Posted in Top10 on November 18th, 2011 by Adrian

After six weeks of an intense travel schedule (LA, Singapore, Hanoi, Saigon, Bangkok, Seattle, New York City), it’s nice to be back home in San Francisco for more than just a couple days. So now that we’ve had a week to settle back into the swing of things here at Bootie home base, it’s time for another belated Top 10.

In keeping with tradition, two weeks of tardiness have resulted in five extra tracks, so this is actually a Top 15. And what a mixed bag it is! We’ve got mashups both old and new on this list, dusting off some forgotten favorites, as well as showcasing some brand-new productions.

One caveat: Having been on tour, we’re a bit backlogged in going through new music, so if you’ve sent us something, we might not have gotten to it yet. We’re still sifting through the “New Mashups” folder that contains about 200 tracks in it, but hey, that’s what the December Top 10 is for, right? And if you want to send us mashup submissions, please use our NEW email address (and only send 1 or 2 tracks/links max.): mashups@bootieusa.com

Sorted alphabetically by bootlegger.

Divide & Kreate - Save The Streets (U2 vs. Swedish House Mafia) – Stockholm, Sweden
There’s just something so epic and anthemic about BOTH of these songs, perfect for last call, or — depending on where you’re DJing — sunrise!

DJs From Mars – Where Dem Levels At (Avicii vs. David Guetta vs. DJs From Mars) – Torino, Italy
We’ve publicly lamented the inherit lameness (and laziness) of what we call “what’s the point?” mashups – sure, two current pop hits mixed together might technically be a “mashup,” but who cares? Sometimes though, you just can’t help yourself, so if you ARE going to do it, rip a page from the DJs From Mars handbook and put shit-tons of your own production work on it, making it your own, and elevating it beyond just a mere mashup or remix. When that electronic throbbing dubby bass kicks in, it feels like the aliens have landed.

Electrosound – Crazy Little Feel Called Love (James Brown vs. Queen vs. Fatboy Slim vs. Beck) – France
Classic genre-clashed A+B (with a little C and D thrown in for spice too). Every wonder what would happen if James Brown fronted Queen instead of Freddie Mercury? Wonder no more!

The Evolution Control Committee – Stairway To Britney (Britney Spears vs. Led Zeppelin) – Columbus, Ohio
Since 1986, The ECC have been violating copyright law the hard way, long before computers made it easy. They’ve been making mashups since before the term even existed – hell, before even most of today’s mashup producers were even born! Earlier this year, they put out a new album, All Rights Reserved, where this classic – the closing song of their sets for years – finally got released.

Lobsterdust – Sunglasses x3 (Chris Brown vs. Corey Hart) - New York City
Lobsterdust makes his obligatory appearance on the Bootie Top 10 with this dance floor gem, which revives Corey Hart’s ’80s classic by grafting Chris Brown’s “Yeah 3x” on top. Lobsterdust shows, once again, his excellent production skills on this track.

Markito – Hello Without You (Martin Solveig feat. Dragonette vs. U2) – Vienna
Want your mashup to instantly sound more epic and anthemic? Just add some “Joshua Tree”-era U2! The venerable Irish band makes their second appearance on this list, adding some gravitas to Dragonette’s “Hello” vocal. Another good one for late-night!

Mashup-Germany – Who Knew Someone Like You… (Adele vs. Pink vs. 4 Non Blondes vs. Ben E. King vs. Snow Patrol vs. Lady Gaga vs. Whitney Houston) – Frankfurt, Germany
Despite his well-earned reputation as a killer dance-floor club DJ, Mashup-Germany’s production forté is really in multi-mashed tracks like this, where he fuses seven songs into a plaintive, beautiful slow jam. If we were producing a Broadway mashup musical, this would be the heartfelt ensemble ballad… and there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the house!

MixmstrStel – Now That We Found Mr. Saxobeat (Heavy D and The Boyz vs. Alexandra Stan) – Boston
We couldn’t do a Bootie Top 10 this month without paying tribute to rapper Heavy D (R.I.P.). Mashed-up a month before he died, this is a fitting tribute from Boston’s MixmstrStel.

DJ not-I – Keep On Rockn (My Rebellion) (Steve Miller vs. Arcade Fire) - UK
A forgotten favorite from the vaults. Indie darlings Arcade Fire somehow elevate Steve Miller’s best-known song into something … more than the same song you’ve been hearing on classic rock radio since the ’70s.

RLP – Respect 2010 (RLP feat. Aretha Franklin & Lil’ Jon) – France
Here’s an interesting case study in how to get your mashup officially released: Come up with a great idea and get it out there (like this one!). Since you can’t get or afford the original licensing, when it starts to gain attention, find someone to record a very faithful cover version of the song you’re bootlegging. Release a nearly identical version of your original mashup to great acclaim. See how easy that was? However, since Bootie specializes in bootleg mashups, you’re getting the one using the original artists here.

Salvador G (Automatic Reaction) – Ignition – The Blue Remix (R. Kelly vs. New Order) – New York City
The world isn’t exactly crying out for yet another “Blue Monday” mashup, but dammit, we just couldn’t resist! R. Kelly’s vocals somehow cheeses this one up just enough for our tastes.

DJ Schmolli – Cruelly Good Summer Feeling (Flo Rida vs. Avicii vs. Ace Of Base vs. Sak Noel vs. Jason Derulo vs. Stanton Warriors vs. Aura Dione vs. t.A.T.u. vs. Adele vs. Travie McCoy vs. Groove Armada vs. Britney Spears) – Vienna
As one of our favorite mashup producers, Austria’s Schmolli is consistently excellent with a well-crafted A+B mashup, but here, he starts venturing into Earworm/Titus Jones territory, taking 12 songs and fusing them into one seamless song creation.

DJ ShyBoy – Bette Davis Eyes In The Dark (Graph Gonzales vs. Kim Carnes vs. Corey Hart) – Los Angeles
One way to try to break an up-and-coming artist is to mash up one of her songs with (in this case) much more well-known songs. Here, DJ ShyBoy does just that, taking Canadian indie/alternative/pop musician Graph Gonzales and mashing her up with TWO ’80s classics. Shyboy creates a very beautiful mashup out of these, perhaps greater than the sum of its parts… and makes us want to know more about this new artist. And what’s up with Corey Hart this month? His second appearance on this list!

Titus Jones – Bad Things Will Roll With The Devil (Marilyn Manson vs. Christina Aguilera vs. Jace Everett vs. Rihanna vs. Lady GaGa vs. Katy Perry vs. Yeah Yeah Yeahs vs. Drowning Pool vs. 666 vs. Mike Oldfield) - Nashville
Barely released in time for Halloween, this is simply too good (and not too spooky-specific) to only be played once a year. In typical Titus Jones fashion, it’s incredibly diva-licious (although shockingly lacking any Britney Spears), but gets MAJOR bonus points for using the theme song from “True Blood!” Titus Jones does it again!

Voicedude - Moves Like A Deadmau5 (Maroon 5 vs. Deadmau5 vs. Rolling Stones) – Orange County, California
We had unfairly overlooked this one a few months ago, due to the fact that we were simply so sick of that damn Deadmau5 song, surely the most mashed-up song of both 2010 and 2011! But there’s no denying that this mashup works great, and with the added Mick Jagger vocal, it just ties it all together.

Bootie Top 20 – September/October 2011

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on September 29th, 2011 by Adrian

When we started the Bootie Top 10, we had rules, dammit! Only 10 mashups! Posted the first week of every month! No more than one mashup per producer! Listed in alphabetical order by bootlegger!

But everyone knows what rules are for: to be broken! Hell, this is Bootie’s mantra!

For one thing, this semi-monthly list of mashup downloads is turning into a “Top 10″ in name only, due to the fact that we rarely whittle this thing down to only 10 tracks, and half the time, we’re trying to make up for posting this shit weeks late anyway.

This month is no exception. Yeah, yeah, we pretty much skipped September, just like we predicted we would, since all we did the entire month was play “catch up” after being at Burning Man, not to mention having so many Booties to run, and an Asia tour to plan! (This is why we gave you guys 15 mashups in August.)

Whatever. We’ve yet to hear anyone complain about us posting TOO MANY free mashups. And since we’ll be gigging in Southeast Asia pretty much the entire month of October, and then be knee-deep in Halloween Booootie parties and the return of Bootie Brooklyn on November 5, don’t expect another “Bootie Top 10″ at least until then. You have been warned!

But to make it up to you, we’re giving you September and October together NOW. And if you’re doing the math, that means between August and October, you’ve gotten 35 mashups. Yes, an extra five mashups – MORE than you’d have gotten in 3 months. Consider it our “late fee.” You’re welcome.

CLICK HERE to download all 20 tracks in a convenient zip file.
Or right-click individual tracks below to download.

dj BC - Queen of Atlanta (Queen vs. JD and Ludacris vs. Ray Charles vs. CL Smooth vs. Outkast) - Atlanta
It’s only been a few months since dj BC left Bootie Boston to relocate to Atlanta, but he’s already launching Bootie ATL … complete with its own theme song! But what do you expect from a guy who has a Bootie tattoo on his arm? This mashup would definitely make us want to go to the ATL party!

BEE GEES – TRIPLE SHOT
Daily Daze – Stayin’ Low! (Bee Gees vs. Lil’ Jon vs. De La Soul) – Russia
Lobsterdust – Stayin’ Hot (Nelly vs. Bee Gees) - New York City
DJ Rick Lee – Children Should Be Dancing (Bee Gees vs. Dave Darell) – Germany
We have a soft spot for the Bee Gees, as this “triple shot” attests. We couldn’t pick just one! The first two re-appropriate the venerable (and always danceable) music of “Stayin’ Alive,” while the third updates “You Should Be Dancing” for the electro generation, complete with filter sweeps and breakdowns.

DJs From Mars – Eine Kleine Big Booty Bonkers (Dizzee Rascal vs. Bombs Away vs. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart) – Italy
DJs From Mars do it again! We are just LOVING this one. And now when people ask “has anyone every mashed up classical music?” we’ve got more than just our own classic Beethoven mashup to showcase. It’s an 18th century mashup resurgence!

KATY PERRY “LAST FRIDAY NIGHT” – DOUBLE SHOT
G3rst – Stand By Last Friday Night (Katy Perry vs. Ben E. King) – The Netherlands
Marc Johnce – You Shook Me All Friday Night Long (Katy Perry vs. AC/DC) – Germany
We unashamedly love Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night” (which pretty much describes how we feel after nearly every Bootie SF party!) So here are two VERY different takes on it, the first turning it into a slow jam which really showcases the lyrics, and the second which Bootie’s house band Smash-Up Derby should be covering very soon, since it sounds practically tailor-made for them!

CLASSIC ROCK GOES ELECTRO – TRIPLE SHOT
Hifi Banjo Strings – Wait For A Ride (Boston vs. Holy Ghost!) – UK
LeeDM101 – History Of A Lonely Heart (Yes vs. Groove Armada) – UK
MadMixMustang – So, Did Ya Think About It? (Rod Stewart vs. Fedde Le Grand) – The Netherlands
Considering how much the mashup scene is oversaturated with tracks featuring vocals by current rappers and pop divas (ooops! see above) it’s always a welcome relief to hear vocals from vintage songs get mashed up. Here, three classic rock staples get modern electro makeovers, recontextualizing three artists from the ’70s and giving them all a fresh sound.

Isosine – Psychosocial Baby (Justin Bieber vs. Slipknot) – Canada
This made the rounds on the internet months ago, but it took us a while to get to it. Sure it’s got the classic mashup “wow factor” – Slipknot singing over a Justin Bieber song? WTF? But once you get past the initial novelty of the total genre-clash, it still holds up, showcasing Slipknot’s nascent pop sensibilities, especially on the chorus.

ABBA “SUPER TROUPER” – DOUBLE SHOT
MadMixMustang – Super Jumper (ABBA vs. Van Halen) – The Netherlands
The Reborn Identity – Lights Are Gonna Find Me (ABBA vs. Ellie Goulding) – UK
You can always tell when a new acapella get leaked, because the entire bootleg community jumps on it like hungry vultures, flooding the scene with mashups that all crib from the same material. The mashup scene has been sorely lacking some ABBA, but apparently the “Super Trouper” ‘pella recently got leaked. Let’s hope there’s more where that came from!

Marc Johnce – Freaky Kicks In The Dark (Foster The People vs. Dev vs. Mayra Verónica) – Germany
Marc Johnce has been a pop powerhouse in the mashup scene lately, resulting in his second appearance here this month. We’ve been waiting for a really good mashup using Foster The People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” and this delivers. Marc, you’ve done it again.

MASHUP-GERMANY – DOUBLE SHOT
Mashup-Germany – Enjoy Yourself (Hillsong United vs. Blur vs. MGMT vs. Jaquee vs. Katy Perry vs. Culcha Candela vs. Marteria vs. Nirvana vs. Madcon) – Germany
Mashup-Germany – Leveled Without You (David Guetta feat. Usher vs. DJ Icey & Willi Wonk vs. Avicii) – Germany
Bootie Berlin’s Mashup-Germany is our special guest DJ at Bootie LA and SF this month, so it makes sense to feature two sides of this mashup master. The first is a rock track that combines no less than nine artists. The second is a rare A+B from a producer who’s generally not happy unless he’s mashing up at least half a dozen songs. But this track is hot, and gives Usher an electro edge we love.

Mighty Mike – Crazy Time To Relax (Frankie Goes To Hollywood vs. Seal vs. Chic) – France
We just did ’70s vs. ’80s Mashup Night at Bootie SF, and we wish we had this one at the time! Oh well, we can still save it for when we do our disco-themed night, Bootie-O 54! Another great track from France’s Mighty Mike.

MixmstrStel & DJ Tripp – Where Dem Moves At, Judas? (Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera vs. Lady Gaga vs. David Guetta) – Boston / Santa Cruz, CA

Damn you, Maroon 5. We thought we hated you. I mean, we still kinda do, but now it’s because you made us actually like one your songs. That is one fine catchy pop melody, which goes even better with some David Guetta and Lady Gaga. This is well-produced dancefloor gold.

Swede Mason – Masterchef Synesthesia (Buttery Biscuit Bass) [feat. Gregg Wallace & John Torrode] – UK
This was our camp’s theme song at Burning Man this year. You had to be there. But really, it’s the video that makes this track anyway, so just watch it here, as it remixes vocal samples from the UK TV show “Masterchef’ and turns it into a BUMPIN’ dance track. Watch out for the obligatory “wobble” dubstep breakdown! The two chefs liked it so much they actually sanctioned an official release in the UK!

Titus Jones – Don’t Stop Believin’ In This Love On Earth (Lady Gaga vs. Belinda Carlisle vs. Journey vs. Madonna vs. Ke$ha vs. Bruno Mars vs. Leona Lewis vs. New York Outlaw) – Nashville
Last but certainly not least, this has been Adrian’s “secret weapon set-closer” lately. Taken from his still-great “Culture Shock” album, Titus Jones seems to be gunning for Earworm’s crown with this one, resulting in this pop mash-terpiece.

Bootie Top 15 – August 2011

Posted in Top10 on August 11th, 2011 by Adrian

Where’s my free shit? It’s here folks, it’s here!

Despite being bogged down in the thick of preparations for our epic Bootie 8-Year Anniversary in San Francisco (yes, we’ve really been doing this for eight years!) … which includes our own wild multimedia DJ set/show called “The A+D Show 3, This Time It’s Personal” … and despite getting ready for Bootie BRC (our party at Burning Man at the end of the month) … we still managed to crank out a Top 10 for August, which includes many bootleggers making their first appearance.

With a dozen tracks and three “double-shots,” the total is actually 15 mashups for you to download. So count those extra 5 tracks as our late fee! Or rather, we’re paid up in free mashups through the middle of next month! (We’ll be away at Burning Man, so the September Top 10 will be released mid-month.)

CLICK HERE to download all 15 tracks in a convenient zip file.
Or right-click individual tracks below to download.

A PLUS D DOUBLE-SHOT
A Plus D – Party Rock Song 2 (LMFAO vs. Blur) – San Francisco
A Plus D – Gucci Gucci Girl Power (Kreayshawn vs. Toni Basil vs. Le Tigre vs. The Ting Tings vs. The Trashwomen vs. The Go-Go’s) – San Francisco
Throwing at least five mashup parties a month doesn’t always leave much time for actual mashup production, but we’ve been abnormally productive this past month. The first was an exclusive for the “Mash-Up Your Bootz Vol. 50″ compilation. Remember guitars? We put the actual ROCK in “Party Rock Anthem.” CHECK OUT THE VIDEO made by Tommy Papke!
The second features Kreayshawn, a hot, young, white female indie rapper from Oakland, CA who is blowing up right now. We had so many ideas for so many mashups — yes, rap really IS that easy to mash up — that we decided to combine several ideas into one track, connected by the fact that they’re all female artists, spanning 30 years of music. Girl power! And as an added bonus, this may be a first: one of the backing artists in this mashup is The Trashwomen, an all-female, regionally-popular Cali surf-punk band from the ’90s, which included Kreayshawn’s mother on guitar. Yes, we mashed Kreayshawn up with … her MOM!

DEPRESSING DECEASED DIVA DOUBLE-SHOT
DJs From Mars – November Rehab (Amy Winehouse vs. Guns N’ Roses) – Torino, Italy
Production Unit – Intro Again (Aaliyah vs. the xx) – Glasgow, UK
Could these two mashups get any more depressing? Or poignant? Added pathos by the sheer fact that the singers in both these mashups died tragically too soon. And if you ever wondered if DJs From Mars could produce a traditional A+B mashup without their signature electro sound, your question has been answered. Their Amy Winehouse tribute nearly brought tears to our eyes. It’s that beautiful … and heartbreaking. R.I.P. Amy and Aaliyah.

Divide & Kreate – Dogmother (Danzig vs Rex the Dog) – Stockholm, Sweden
It’s been a while since we’ve heard from Divide & Kreate, but he returns with an electro makeover for a rock classic. Who knew “Mother” could be so electronic and danceable? Don’t tell Danzig!

Dylan Vasey – OMG You Changed The Way You Kiss Me (Usher vs. Example) – London
We are loving this Example track – a huge hit in the UK, but still not even released in U.S. Perhaps a guest vocal by Usher will make it more palatable for American ears?

“IT GETS BETTER” MASHUP!
Elastic Productions – Never Be Afraid To Be Who You Are (Glee Cast vs. Westlife vs. Oasis vs. Cat Stevens)
A previously undiscovered gem from “The 3rd World” mashup compilation – see, that’s what happens when the meaningful slow songs are buried at the end. It’s a beautiful, heartfelt mashup that could very easily be the anthem for the “It Gets Better” project for queer or questioning youth.

G3rst – Cheated Luv (Yeah Yeah Yeahs vs. The Ordinary Boys) – The Netherlands
G3rst is known for his off-beat, creative mashups that often make use of underused source material and musical genres that other bootleggers won’t touch. Here, he doesn’t disappoint, turning the Yeah Yeah Yeahs tune into a jaunty, folksy ditty.

Jimmy Klok – Drop Dead Pretty Girl Yeah! (Britney Spears vs. Keri Hilson vs. Chris Brown vs. Method Man vs. Cutting Crew) – Germany
Pure pop club gold from a German bootlegger making his first appearance on our Top 10. So very “now now now” … and guaranteed to make the Bootie dance floor move! This also contains a very humble *ahem* Keri Hilson vocal that cracks us up every time: “Don’t hate me ‘cuz I’m beautiful!” Super fun to sing along to.

ELLIE GOULDING DUBSTEP/ELECTRO DOUBLE-SHOT
Kap Slap – E.T. Feels Starry Eyed (Ellie Goulding vs. Bill Posters vs. Katy Perry vs. Modestep vs. Stellamara vs. Empire Of The Sun vs. Busta Rhymes vs. Xilent) – Kentucky, USA
3LAU – All Night Long (Ellie Goulding vs. LMFAO vs. Mann vs. Felguk vs. Darth & Vader) – St. Louis, USA
Two producers from the Midwest mash up British songstress Ellie Goulding – among others – by giving her the clubby remix treatment. And yes, one of these is a dubstep track. I can’t believe we’ve finally succumbed to including dubstep. It’s incredibly trendy right now, but we’ve been hearing it at Burning Man for years … and have never really loved it. But tracks like this are warming us up to the genre (and the Ellie and Katy vocals help).

Marc Johnce – Who Dat Addictive Bad S&M Girl (David Guetta feat. Taio Cruz & Ludacris vs. Flo-Rida feat. Akon vs. Britney Spears vs. Rihanna vs. Medina vs. Katy Perry vs. Jennifer Lopez feat. Pitbull) – Germany
With at least six songs mashed into one track, this doesn’t do much to dispell the notion that “all pop songs today sound the same.” But it DOES prove Marc Johnce’s ample production talents! If you like dancefloor pop, this one’s for you!

Maya Jakobson vs. Lobsterdust – Deep Dream Control (Missy Elliott vs. Adele vs. Britney Spears vs. Stevie Nicks vs. Tchaikovsky) – Tel Aviv / New York City
We’re giving away a “Bootie secret weapon” here. This is actually only HALF a new mashup on the Top 10, since Maya Jackobson’s first half already appeared here a few months ago. But she wasn’t the only one who discovered that Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” mashes seamlessly with Britney Spears’ “Till The World Ends,” as dozens of bootleggers have made the same track, including Lobsterdust, who included a surprise appearance by Stevie Nicks. So we combined our favorite parts for a mashup of the mashups! Fun fact: Both bootleggers are Israeli!

Titus Jones - Hello Girl, Let’s Party Til The End (Martin Solveig feat. Dragonette vs. Britney Spears vs. LMFAO vs. No Doubt vs. Sum 41 vs. Vanilla Ice) – Nashville
On the lead track off the “Mash-Up Your Bootz Vol. 5″ compilation, our favorite bootlegger from Nashville, Titus Jones, knocks it out of the park , showcasing his signature mega-mash style. (BTW, is there a Britney Spears single this man has NOT mashed up?)

DJ Topcat – Summertime In The City (Mos Def vs. Lovin’ Spoonful) – Seattle
It’s still summertime, so we just HAD to include this one, our favorite track off the annual “Summer Booty 2011″ (no relation to Bootie) mashup compilation. Reminds us of hot summer days … which we don’t really get in San Francisco! But we hope YOU are out there enjoying them!

Bootie Top 10 – July 2011

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on July 9th, 2011 by Adrian

It’s summertime, so it’s been a little slow in the mashup scene, with quality choons drying up a bit. Still, we’ve managed to uncover a few gems out there, as well as a spate of fresh new mashup talent. For the naysayers who claim we only feature the same producers over and over again, you’ll be surprised to discover four newcomers here, all making debuts on the Bootie Top 10!

Listed (mostly) alphabetically by bootlegger.
To download all mashups in one convenient zip file, CLICK HERE

Chocomang — Stop Me Cruising (The Smiths vs. Rootical Record Crew) — Paris
The Smiths make it to the Top 10 two months in a row! See, this is what happens when an acapella from a classic, much-loved band finally gets leaked. Ever wondered what Morrissey would sound like fronting a reggae band? Neither did we, but, well… here you go!

PARTY ROCK ANTHEM DOUBLE SHOT!
DJ Earworm — Party On The Floor (LMFAO vs. Jennifer Lopez vs. Pitbull vs. Jessie J vs. Nicole Scherzinger vs. Example vs. Mike Posner vs. Ne-Yo vs. The Wanted vs. Far East Movement vs. JLS vs. Katy B vs. Cee-Lo Green vs. Enrique Iglesias vs. Wretch 32 vs. Mann) — San Francisco
MashMike — Pump Up The Party Rock (LMFAO vs. Pink vs. Kraze vs. Danzel vs. C&C Music Factory vs. Salt-N-Pepa vs. Diddy Dirty Money) — Lower Bavaria, Germany
DJ Earworm is the undisputable master of complex, multi-layered mashups, easily running circles around the likes of Girl Talk. For the second year in a row, he has put together a mashup of all 15 artists that performed at Capital FM’s Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium in London. Since he uses LMFAO as the primary music base, we couldn’t help but include another “Party Rock Anthem” mashup — it’s certainly this summer’s theme song. On the second mashup, newcomer Mash Mike layers another six tracks on top of it, and they all seem to be about the same thing — partying! Hey, no one ever said summertime was for deep thoughts…

Hifi Banjo Strings — The One Who Changed The Way I Love (R.E.M. vs. Example) — UK
We haven’t done an “Electro-Bootie” room upstairs at Bootie SF in a long time, but tracks like this one, which turns R.E.M.’s ’80s college-rock lament into a dark electro floor-banger, make us want to bring it back.

STV SLV / The Hood Internet — Hello Something (Dragonette vs. The Kickdrums vs. Kutcorners) — Chicago
We’ve already heard a zillion mashups that use Martin Solveig’s “Hello” as the instrumental. But for us, the real hook of the song is Dragonette’s guest vocal, so it’s nice to finally hear it used in a bootleg … even if it’s mashed up with two obscure artists we’ve never heard of! But that’s what we’ve come to expect from The Hood Internet, who have introduced us to countless obscure artists we’ve never heard of. They’re like an indie band’s publicists’ best friend.

DJ Schmolli — Invincible Girls Run The World (Beyoncé vs. Pat Benatar) — Vienna, Austria
Two forthright female singers from two different decades come together in one fierce mashup. Both songs celebrate girl power in their own way, so it only makes sense that they fit together so perfectly. The world needs more Pat Benatar mashups, and frankly, we couldn’t get by this month without including Beyoncé’s ode to female empowerment.

DJ ShyBoy — She Works Hard For The Lights (Ellie Goulding vs. Donna Summer) — Los Angeles
Singer Ellie Goulding isn’t very well-known outside of her native England, but we sure do love this bootleg. Here, DJ Shyboy mashes her up with one of his all-time favorite artists, Donna Summer. Folktronica disco pop?

LADY GAGA DOUBLE SHOT!
DJ Tripp — Edge of Love (Lady Gaga vs. The Outfield) — Santa Cruz, CA
Wax Audio – I’m In Love With Judas Priest (Lady Gaga vs. Judas Priest) — Sydney, Australia
Two very different mashups from Gaga’s two most recent singles off of her “Born This Way” album. DJ Tripp mashes her up with The Outfield — still an inexplicable sing-along hit, 25 years later — while Wax Audio takes her recent heavy metal-inspired imagery (with her leather and motorcycle) and takes it all the way there by mashing up  “Judas” with Priest!

Tweylo — Roll Away Your Lazy Eye (Silversun Pickups vs. Mumford & Sons) — Leverkusen, Germany
One for the hipsters. LA indie rock meets London folk. Strips away the Silversuns’ original buzzy electric guitars and replaces them with banjos and mandolins. Of course, it just magically works.

Bootie Top 10 – June 2011

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on June 7th, 2011 by Adrian

We told you that you wouldn’t have to wait another two months for a Bootie Top 10, and we weren’t lying. Here’s a baker’s dozen (yes, 13 tracks) of mashups, including a few forgotten favorites, and a couple Bootie Exclusives you won’t find anywhere else.

It’s Pride Month here in San Francisco, so in celebration, we’ve added a couple extra ‘”gay” mashups here … but there’s definitely still a little something for everyone.

Sorted alphabetically by mashup producer. Right-click to download individual tracks.
Click here to download all 20 tracks in one convenient ZIP file!

A Plus D – Planetary Firework (Go!) (Katy Perry vs. My Chemical Romance) – San Francisco
This was made for a My Chemical Romance remix contest, and while it’s not likely to win (unless the band are secret Katy Perry fans), it’s given us an opportunity to sneak MCR (one of Adrian’s favorite bands) into our Bootie sets. The crowd never knows what hit them, since they’re too busy jumping up and down and singing along to “Firework”! Adrian imagines this in an episode of Glee, as some “girls vs. boys” or “rockers vs. pop kids” thing.

ElectroSound – Deep Desires (Adele vs. Muse) – France
Sick of this Adele song yet? Strangely, we’re not … especially when it keeps getting mashed up with interesting material, such as this bootleg from a few months ago, which reimagines Muse with a new female lead singer.

G3rst – We No Speak Cantina (Star Wars Cantina Theme vs. Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP) – The Netherlands
We’ll admit it, this hits our inner-geek sweet spot. And while the MP3 is humorous enough on its own, it’s really all about the VIDEO, which takes those Darth Vader quotes and puts them in proper context.

John Marr – Black Or White (Michael Jackson vs. Martin Solveig) – Edinburgh, Scotland
This is Mysterious D’s current secret weapon. This Martin Solveig track is definitely the current electro “now sound,” but by adding classic Michael Jackson vocals to the spastic cut-up dance beats, John Marr has bridged a generation gap and brought Michael Jackson right into the future.

Lobsterdust – Whole Lotta Extra Dougie (Cali Swag District vs. Led Zeppelin vs. Katy Perry) – New York City  BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
Speaking of Mysterious D… she is also currently OBSESSED with this track right now. She says you can make up your own dances to it. However, if you want to see the original Dougie by Cali Swag District (R.I.P. M-Bone), click here. (Warning, it’s pretty bad!) We like this version WAY better, care of Carlton of the “Fresh Prince of Bel Aire.”  This also happens to be our favorite “E.T.” mashup out there.

KORN GOES GAY DOUBLE-SHOT!
MadMixMustang – Mia Freaky Mamma (On A Leash) (Korn vs. ABBA) – The Netherlands
Marc Johnce – Word Up This Way (Lady Gaga vs. Korn vs. Cameo) – Nuremberg, Germany
We saved these for Gay Pride Month! The first one is a forgotten favorite that slowly (like, over the course of two years) grew on us and has become a staple in Adrian’s early sets. It’s an extreme genre-clash that somehow makes Korn listenable. ABBA has that kind of power. The second one features Korn covering Cameo, but mashed up seamlessly with Gaga. These are certainly the gayest songs you’ll ever hear Korn doing. And we think we like them much better this way!

Mashup-Germany – Follow Me To A Wonderful World (Elijah King vs. Louis Armstrong vs. Uncle Kracker vs. Bruno Mars vs. Rich & Bitch) – Frankfurt, Germany
Germany’s master of the multi-song mashup returns to the Top 10 with an inspired, touching mashup with uplifting lyrical messages. Bonus points for finding a way to bring back that great Louis Armstrong vocal too!

Rappy – The Power Of Creep (Celine Dion vs. Radiohead) – Jakarta, Indonesia
Another forgotten favorite, this has been Adrian’s opening song at Bootie for the past few months, where as soon as its played, at least one or two people from the venue staff come up to the DJ booth to ask “WTF?” Never fails to shock and surprise…

The Reborn Identity – Friday Night In A&E (The Smiths vs. Morning Parade) – Manchester, UK
Take the vocal from a much-beloved British alternative band from the ’80s. Mash it up with the current single from an up-and-coming British indie band. Works so damn well, and major props for being one of the few mashups anywhere using a Smiths vocal!

DJ Schmolli – Sweet Sweet Dreams (Eurythmics vs. Recover Project/La Bouche) – Vienna
Schmolli resurrects a long-forgotten early ’90s Eurodance club hit by mashing it up with the same-titled (yet timeless) Eurythmics song, which, let’s face it, people just never seem to tire of. The added bass and samples make this super fun for the dance floor.

DJ Tripp – Express This Way (Remix) (Lady Gaga vs. Madonna) – Santa Cruz, CA   BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
DJ Tripp remixes his own mashup (get the original here), adding a lot more creativity and production to his original mix, which, admittedly, was rushed out to the internet within hours of the release of Gaga’s “Born This Way,” in order to capitalize on its uncanny cribbing of Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” Here, the extra time he spent on the remix clearly shows, with more production sheen, tailor-made for the dance floor.

Voicedude – Mars Chocolate (Bruno Mars vs. Hot Chocolate) – Orange County, CA
For the past few months, this has been Adrian’s secret weapon. Cheesy as it is, chicks just LOVE “You Sexy Thing.” Add in the surprise of “Just The Way You Are,” and suddenly, you’ve just kick-started your dance floor. Works every time.

Bootie Top 20 – May 2011

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on May 9th, 2011 by Adrian

In the nearly eight weeks since we last posted a Bootie Top 20, we’ve been traveling for at least half that time, throwing Bootie parties in São Paulo, London, Holland, Austin, LA, and of course, every Saturday night in our home base of San Francisco (even when we’re not actually, physically there!)

So we know you’ll forgive us for being a little tardy again with this one … especially you people who bug us via Twitter and email, complaining how we haven’t posted any new mashups. You might as well just say, “Where’s my free shit, dammit?”

Slogging through the slush of the bootleg scene to bring you the best mashups takes time and care and … a slightly less-hectic schedule than we’ve been keeping these past two months. Still, there was a bumper crop of great boots out there, so doubling up this month was really the only way to go. Who loves you? That right, WE DO.

Plus, we promise not to wait another eight weeks. Hell, we already have about seven of June’s Top 10 already picked out!

Download all 20 tracks in one convenient ZIP file!
Or right-click individual tracks below. Sorted (mostly) alphabetically by bootlegger.

dj BC - Stuntin’ Like a Father Figure (Lil’ Wayne & Birdman vs. George Michael) – Boston
This track is perfect for anyone with “Daddy issues!” Bootie Boston’s own dj BC puts a hip-hop spin on this chilled-out George Michael classic from the ’80s. Perfect for early in the night (or ramping it down near the end). Speaking of daddies, congrats go out to BC, who just became the father of twins!

DJs FROM MARS DOUBLE-SHOT
DJs From Mars – DJ Got Us Falling In Hot Stuff (Usher vs. Donna Summer) – Turin, Italy
DJs From Mars – Show Me In The Deep (Hard Electro Remix) (Adele vs. Robin S. vs. DJs From Mars) - Turin, Italy
After booking Italy’s DJs From Mars for both Bootie LA and SF this month, you can’t even imagine our disappointment when we found out that they can’t get into the U.S. right now due to visa problems. Grrrrrr… However, the electro-banger brilliance of these two tracks will still be rockin’ a Bootie dance floor, whether they’re there to spin it live or not! Although we absolutely love both of these tracks, we have a special place in our heart for the hard electro bangin’ beauty of “Show Me In The Deep.” One word: Wow.

Envision – Boys & Girls Fight With Fire (Scissor Sisters vs. Good Charlotte) – Australia
We thought the new Scissor Sisters single was okay, but for some odd, inexplicable reason, pairing it with Good Charlotte (a band we’re barely familiar with) elevates it into an anthemic modern rock jam that’s somehow way better than both original songs. This is the first of four tracks on this month’s Top 10 from the recently-released “The 3rd World” genre-mashed compilation, put together by Envision.

Faroff - Mashed Girl (The Temptations vs. Cee-Lo Green) – Los Angeles
We have to admit, the shelf life of “Fuck You” has nearly expired, but this new soul mashup from Faroff just barely squeaks by, with its clever back-and-forth play with the classic “My Girl,” exchanging both backing instrumental and vocals, and then flipping it in reverse in the next verse.

Fissunix – Need To Be With You Tonight (INXS vs. Smokey Robinson) – France
For the past few months, this has been a staple in Adrian’s early sets, setting a sexy smoove Motown groove to warm up the dance floor.

HEAVY METAL DOUBLE-SHOT
Fissunix & DJ Schmolli – Hairbangers (Willow Smith vs. Kreator) – France / Austria
DJ Flashard – Everyone’s The Beast (Iron Maiden vs. Lily Allen) – UK
Two very different heavy metal mashups, showcasing the genre’s unique instrumentation and vocal stylings, respectively. The first uses Kreator’s thrash metal to add double-meaning to Willow Smith’s ode to hair whipping (which, is, of course, a direct result of headbanging). The other shines a bright light on Iron Maiden’s classic high-pitched metal vocals, stripped away from its bombast to reveal a hidden melodic pop sensibility.

Frail Limb Purity – Centerfold Rocketeer (J. Geils Band v. Far East Movement) – Arizona
A modern makeover of a #1 hit from 1982, breathing new life into a nearly-forgotten pop gem. Stuff like this makes me wonder why more older artists don’t get their classic material officially remixed or mashed up, in order to expose themselves to a younger audience.

KOOKY MASHUP DOUBLE-SHOT
G3rst – I Got New York (Black Eyed Peas vs. Frank Sinatra) - The Netherlands
DJ Schmolli – In The Mood For Some Killing (Glenn Miller & His Orchestra vs. Rage Against The Machine) – Austria
A few years ago, we compiled a CD for DJing entitled “Kooky Mashups” — ridiculous stuff like rap mashed up with classical music, or TV show themes turned on its ear. These two new mashups would feel right at home on that disc, mashing up swing with ’90s rage rock, and a Broadway show tune with a pop-party jam. “I Got New York” came out nearly a year-and-a-half ago, but ever since we dropped it at the last Bootie NYC party, we’ve discovered it’s a great way to bring everyone in the room together to kick-start the night! Tonight’s gonna be a good night!

LeeDM101 vs. Party Ben – Killing Days Are Over (Bootie Edit) (Echo & the Bunnymen vs. Florence + the Machine) – UK / San Francisco
We really liked Party Ben’s remix of “The Dog Days Are Over,” but it was almost a little TOO faithful to the original song. LeeDM101 mashed it up with “The Killing Moon,” but we really missed that jubilant Florence chorus and wanted a thicker beat. So we combined the mashup with the remix for this special “Bootie edit.”

The Limousines – Internet Killed The Video Star (Party Ben Remix) – San Francisco
We love it when we fall in love with a new song, and then discover it’s from a Bay Area band. Yay! This band is creating a huge buzz, and here they get a bootleg remix with a bit of an ’80s-meets-disco feel, appropriate for a song that not only nicks its title from an iconic song from that same era, but also complains about the kids “disco dancin’” and how the “drum machine ain’t got no soul.” Yes, it’s ironic!

DJ Lobsterdust – Roll It (Salt-N-Pepa vs. Yeah Yeah Yeahs vs. A-Trak) – New York City
Lobsterdust no doubt has his sights set on rockin’ the Bootie NYC dance floor at Santos Party House on Saturday May 21st with this one, which mixes late-’80s rap cheese with NYC electro-indie cool.

Marc Johnce – Report On The Floor (The Way You Are) (Josh Strickland vs. Jennifer Lopez feat. Pitbull vs. Bruno Mars) – Nuremberg, Germany
Can’t-miss club banger all the way, from the always-reliable Marc Johnce. If this doesn’t get you dancing, then you must be in a coma. This one’s just made for the club.

DJ Maya Jakobson – Till The Swan Lose Deep Control (Britney Spears vs. Adele vs. Missy Elliott vs. Tchaikovsky) – Tel Aviv, Israel
So far, our favorite mashup using Britney’s “Till The World Ends,” courtesy of one of the few female mashup producers out there, a woman from Tel Aviv who is also one of the resident DJs of the A.D.D. mashup parties, one of the few true mashup parties in the world whose (fun fact!) name was inspired by Bootie’s “About Us” description. This track is truly diva-licious, especially with that bit from “Black Swan.”

Mighty Mike - 21 Guns In The Battlefield (Pat Benatar vs. Green Day) – France
Green Day’s “21 Guns” was a punk-pop anthem rife with war metaphors in its lyrics, so of course it makes perfect sense to mash it up with “Love Is A Battlefield,” another song that compares love to war.

Phil RetroSpector – The Boys Are Back In Heaven (Pixies vs. Thin Lizzy) – Ireland
Who knew The Pixies nicked a guitar line from Thin Lizzy? Exhibit A: This mashup from Phil RetroSpector, who layers both riffs on top of each other, and you can barely tell the difference. This track also gives Thin Lizzy’s vocals a very different slow and sexy, sultry feel. A seamless pairing!

DJ ShyBoy – Dark Love Kill (Kanye West vs. Hypnogaja vs. La Roux) – Los Angeles
Despite the frequent appearance of a few bootleggers in our Bootie Top 10, nepotism plays no part in our decision-making. In fact, when we’re listening to a week’s worth (or month’s worth, as the case may be) of mashups, we don’t even see the ID3 tags. We’re just picking out the stuff we like, and checking the credits later. So it was particularly surprising when I marked this track, loving it and really wanting to know who the backing band was. To my shock, it was DJ ShyBoy, mashing up his own band Hypnogaja. We had been telling him that he should mash up his own band’s music more. This proves our point why. The Kanye blends in perfectly, but adding La Roux’s “In For The Kill” is the icing on the cake.

Titus Jones – We Love Hustlin’ Drugs (Weezer vs. Rick Ross vs. Ke$ha vs. Katy Perry vs. Afroman) – Nashville
It wouldn’t be a Bootie Top 20 without a track from [*whispers*] Titus Jones. This track takes five songs and finds the common thread between them all … it’s a mashed-up ode to substance use in all its forms! For or against, who cares? This track rocks!

Bootie Top 20 – March/April 2011

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on March 16th, 2011 by Adrian

We were gonna try to rally to get a Top 10 done before leaving for a week of Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro (where we played Bootie Rio) but since we’d been so busy and sleep-deprived getting ready for THAT, we opted to sleep on the plane instead. Now it’s already mid-March and since we’ll be heading back to Brazil in early April to help launch Bootie São Paulo, we figured we might as well just go crazy and make this a Bootie Top 20, since we know we’re not going to have another Top 10 ready in time for April Fool’s Day!

Not only that, but we added a few extras as there were a lot of “topical” mashups and “compare-and-contrast” double shots we wanted to post, including a 4-pack of Brazilian mashups inspired by our travels.

Right-click the title to download, or just grab everything in this convenient zip file:
Bootie Top 20 – March 2011 zip file (156 Mb)

R.I.P. NATE DOGG
A Plus D – I Keep Forgettin To Regulate (Warren G. & Nate Dogg vs. Michael McDonald) – San Francisco
With Nate Dogg’s sad passing yesterday, we just HAD to include this. THIS is how they SHOULD have made “Regulate” (except maybe they didn’t want to pay Michael McDonald for more than a 10-second song loop). Inspired by “Yacht Rock,” Episode 7.  Rest in peace, master of the G-Funk.

CHARLIE SHEEN TIGER BLOOD MASHUP SPECIAL!
Totalcult – Fire-Breathing Fists (Charlie Sheen vs. Cypress Hill) – Birmingham, UK
Even Bootie can’t escape the Charlie Sheen crazy-pants media blitz! All of Charlie’s best sound bites, smartly mashed with “Insane In The Brain.” Winning, duh!

ALBUM OF THE YEAR GRAMMY MASHUP
The Hood Internet – Sprawl Of Glass (Arcade Fire vs. Blondie) – Chicago
With Arcade Fire’s surprising win of “Album of the Year” at last month’s Grammy Awards, we just had to include this, courtesy of The Hood Internet. DAMN, this is a gorgeous mashup!

NEW LADY GAGA TRIPLE SHOT!
DJ Tripp – Express This Way (Lady Gaga vs. Madonna) – Santa Cruz, CA
DJs From Mars – Knock This Way (Lady Gaga vs. Amii Stewart) - Torino, Italy
DJ Tyme & Nathan Scot – Born This Way In The U.S.A. (Lady Gaga vs. Bruce Springsteen) – San Francisco
The release of Lady Gaga’s new single, “Born This Way,” was predictably a smash hit across the globe, so we’ve included three very different mashup variations. The first, released by DJ Tripp mere hours after the original dropped, showcases just how much Lady Gaga “borrowed” from Madonna’s “Express Yourself.” The second is a disco-infused club banger from the always-dependable DJs From Mars (who will be playing Bootie SF, LA and Rio in May!) And the last one is a cheeky, old-school A vs. B, and what it lacks in polish it makes up for in sheer genre-clashed (and lyrically-related) ridiculousness.

A PLUS D BRAZILIAN DOUBLE SHOT!
A Plus D – Sou Foda Time (Os Avassaladores vs. Black Eyed Peas) – San Francisco
A Plus D – We R Who We Tamborzao (Ke$ha vs. DJ Amazing Clay) – San Francisco
We made two new mashups for our gig at Bootie Rio. The first features a hilarious Brazilian rap song “Sou Foda” that became a surprising internet meme, while the second turns Ke$ha into the singer of a baile funk song. Speaking of Brazil — if you’re near São Paulo, we’ll be back there on April 7 to open a brand new Bootie!

POST-CARNAVAL SAMBA SPECIAL!
Faroff – Brazilian Star Wars (John Williams vs. Danzel) – Brasilia / Los Angeles
João Brasil – One More Batucada (Daft Punk vs. Sergio Mendes) – Rio de Janeiro / London
Having now experienced the epic pageantry of Rio’s Carnaval parades, we’ve come away with a new appreciation of samba, and these two mashups were the soundtracks to both Bootie Rio’s and Bootie SF’s Midnight Mashup Shows this past month, which featured bootie-licious samba dancers! Faroff will be spinning with us next month at Bootie LA, while João Brasil is Bootie Berlin’s special guest DJ this Friday (and will also be playing with us at the second Bootie London party on April 22.
CHECK OUT THE VIDEOS HERE and HERE!

NEW BRITNEY DOUBLE SHOT!
DJ Dave Share – Catch Em And Hold It (Britney Spears vs. Busta Rhymes) – Orange County
Titus Jones – Hold Your Sexy Arms Against Me (Britney Spears vs. Cutting Crew vs. Pink vs. David Guetta feat. Akon vs. Taylor Swift) – Nashville
Britney was the OTHER big pop diva to drop a new single, so here are two of ‘em for you: One for the bros and dudes, with Busta droppin’ rhymes to give the song some tough “street cred,” and another for the girls and gays, with its divalicious house beats. The former was also the first single from Titus Jones’ excellent new mashup album, “Culture Shock.”

Dan Mei & Marc Johnce – Whip Your Hands Outta My Dream Hell Bottle (Avril Lavigne vs. The Ting Tings vs. Kylie Minogue vs. Katy Perry vs. Willow Smith vs. The Police) – Denmark / Germany
This mega-mashup of six artists is pure, puréed fun – to quote New York Post’s Ryan Brockington, it’s “pop throwing up on pop.” This track has made quite a splash, and was also given the nod by Kylie herself — who tweeted it to her followers. How’s that for credentials?

Alexis Von Fierce – Salt Air on Mars (Bruno Mars vs. Chew Lips vs. Two Door Cinema Club) – San Francisco
Making a Bootie Top 10 debut here, Alexis Von Fierce takes Bruno Mars’ sentimental ballad and gives it an indie-electro makeover, perfect for the dance floor.

Titus Jones – College Is Crazy (Asher Roth vs. Britney Spears vs. Beyoncé vs. Gnarls Barkley) – Nashville
Titus Jones’ mashup album “Culture Shock” may be our favorite mashup album of the year (that is, until “Best of Bootie 2011″ gets released!) So we couldn’t resist including a second track from the album, especially since we always had a soft spot for Asher Roth’s “I Love College.” This is definitely one of our favorites from the album. Well done, Titus!

DJ Kue – Black and Yellow (DJ Kue Remix) (Wiz Khalifa vs. DJ Kue) – San Jose, CA
This bootleg remix goes out to our LA friend and host Brian — aka “The Bootie LA Office” — who also happens to be a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Sorry ’bout the Super Bowl, dude. But at least this electro-banger brings it.

Divide & Kreate – Crazy In The Deep (Adele vs. Gnarls Barkley) - Stockholm, Sweden
Here’s one for the Europeans and the ahead-of-the-curve Americans (okay, we’ll say it… the gays!) Adele hasn’t quite hit it big in the U.S. the way she has across the pond, but that still hasn’t stopped us from loving it, and dropping it in our early sets.

Mighty Mike – Waiting In Heaven (The Cure vs. Bob Marley) – France
Neither one of us are huge fans of reggae, but we’re both longtime fans of The Cure. This track brings a new light to reggae beats for us, and adds a special chilled-out beauty to The Cure.

LIKE A G6 DOUBLE SHOT
DJ Lobsterdust - G6 Kids (Far East Movement vs. MGMT) – New York City
DJ Shyboy – Like A B.I.G.6 (Notorious B.I.G. vs Far East Movement) – Los Angeles
With “Like A G6″ fast approaching its expiration date (and perhaps past it), we figured we better post these — both big hits on the Bootie dance floor — before its too late!

Bootie Top 10 – February 2011

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on February 4th, 2011 by Adrian

Yeah, yeah, we know … we read your tweets. And we know you guys are chomping at the bit for a fresh batch of mashups. Yes, we skipped the month of January, since we had just released our “Best of Bootie 2010″ CD. But now that you’ve worn THAT out, it’s time to hear what’s been blowing up our playlists at Bootie this past month.

New for 2011! Download all 12 mashups in ONE CONVENIENT ZIP FILE (Right-click to download)

Our New Year’s Resolution was to buy a dedicated server so we could offer up the Top 10 (or Top 12, as the case may be) as an easy-cheesy zip file. Could Bootie love you even more?

A Plus D – Whip My Hair, Whip It Real Good (Willow Smith vs. Devo) - San Francisco

We made this especially for our pal Ryan Brockington over at the New York Post’s PopWrap blog, where it’s been available as an exclusive download. A concept so obvious, it simply HAD to be done. And frankly, we’re shocked at the quality (or lack thereof) of the few other versions out there, so we made our own with extra A Plus D pizzazz.

DJ BC – Silly Fuck Songs (Cee-Lo Green vs. Paul McCartney vs. Diana Ross) – Boston BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!

When Bootie Boston’s DJ BC returned to San Francisco to play our flagship party last month, he came armed with a few new mashups, hot off the laptop. As soon as we heard this one though, we knew we HAD to have it as an “exclusive.” It’s perfect for all our Valentine’s parties this month!

DJs From Mars – Barbramyte (Taio Cruz vs. Duck Sauce) - Torino, Italy
BONUS TRACK: Marc Johnce – Flex Gym Duck (Duck Sauce vs. Dizzee Rascal vs Ray Krebbs) – Nuremberg, Germany

The obligatory entry from the electro-mashers supreme, DJs From Mars. Should we just start reserving a spot on each month’s Top 10 for them? Seriously! Plus, as an added bonus, it’s the original full version of Marc Johnce’s Duck Sauce mashup, which appeared in a hybrid form on the “Best of Bootie 2010″ CD.

Gaston – Cooler Bites The Dust (Queen vs. Crookers feat. Yelle) - France

We love year-end “best mashups” lists, not just to compare notes, but also to see if we missed anything … like this one, which appeared on Culture Bully’s “Top Mashups of 2010″ list. How did we miss this? This is one bad mofo of a mashup.

MadMixMustang – Let’s Dance ‘n Stuff (David Bowie vs. Deadmau5) – The Netherlands

Like so many bootleggers before him, MadMixMustang announced his retirement from the mashup scene, and then cleared off his hard drive by releasing a bunch of leftover tracks, including this previously unreleased gem from 2008. We wonder how long before MMM’s inevitable “comeback!” Seeing as he’s hosting the mashup tent at this year’s Paaspop Music Festival in The Netherlands — with tons of  bootlegger DJs, including ourselves — we think he’ll be back on that laptop churning out more mashup hits before we know it.

Marc Johnce – Know Your Enemy That Got Away (Green Day vs. Katy Perry vs. The Killers) – Nuremberg, Germany

We all know that Green Day has an awful lot of “pop” in their brand of “pop-punk” … but hearing what it would sound like if they went full-tilt Katy Perry pop is jarring … in a good way! And hey, while we’re at it, let’s “Katy Perry” The Killers, too!

Mashup-Germany – I’ll Be Missing You (Don’t Raise Your Glass) (Pink vs. Mike Posner vs. Puff Daddy feat. Faith Evans vs. Kelly Clarkson vs. Black Eyed Peas vs. Tracy Chapman vs. Chic vs. Daft Punk vs. Sportfreunde Stiller) - Frankfurt, Germany

Mashup-Germany is a master at multi-song mashups, and here, he manages to cram no less than nine songs together to craft a four-minute piece of pop gold. Or does this just prove that practically all pop songs sound the same? Either way, big ups go out to Mashup-Germany for this masterful multi-mash!

Party Ben – What’s My Name Jack (John Cougar Mellencamp vs. Rihanna & Drake) – San Francisco

With its loping low-tempo rhythm, ’80s classic “Jack & Diane” has been appropriated by many a hip-hop DJ as an easy musical bed to throw a rap and a beat on top of … and nearly all of them come off flat and uninspired. Well, leave it to someone like Party Ben to finally get it right! Loving this jam.

DJ Shyboy – DramaTron (Mary J. Blige vs. Daft Punk) – Los Angeles

How much do we love this MP3’s artwork of Mary J. Blige as a disc-throwing program on the game grid of Tron? Almost as much as we love her going dark-electro by being mashed up with Daft Punk’s soundtrack, which is “the best thing about the movie,” according to DJ Shyboy.

DJ Tripp – We R L’Amour (Ke$ha vs. Erasure) - Santa Cruz, California BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!

Tripp makes Ke$ha tolerable by reviving a forgotten ’80s favorite and giving her a gay synthpop backing. Just in time for our twisted love mashup sets at this month’s Valentine’s parties! Well-produced and we’re loving finally hearing some Erasure in a mashup!

Voicedude – Sweet Teenage Dreams (Glee Cast vs. Eurythmics) – Los Angeles

More ’80s goodness! Darren Criss’s touching cover of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” – the most downloaded song in “Glee” history – gets a mashup makeover seemingly tailor-made for the Bootie dance floor! Yes, another mashup just in time for Valentines Day!

Best of Bootie 2010 mixtape CD finally released

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on December 27th, 2010 by Adrian

In-between planning an epic, sold-out New Year’s Eve party in San Francisco, our cat getting hospitalized for a couple days, and Adrian getting the full-blown flu during the holidaze, we SOMEHOW still managed to compile and mix this year’s “Best of Bootie” CD! Grab it here: http://bootiemashup.com/bestofbootie2010

We did things a LITTLE differently this year, offering up the album in TWO VERSIONS:

There’s the nearly 80-minute “mixtape” version like we have in years past, meant to be compiled in order and burned on a CD, perfect for playing at parties (or your spin class). This is pretty much the soundtrack to Bootie, crammed to fit on one CD — from the early-in-the-night ramp-up tunes to the prime-time dancefloor bangers to the last-call drunken kookiness to the end-of-the-night sentimental slow jams. It’s like having your own personal Bootie party, on one CD!

Then there’s a second, “unmixed” version, with each track available as a full download – for those who like to mix-and-match their tracks, or simply not have the beginnings and ends of their mashups cut off when they use the “shuffle” function on their iPods. This version will definitely NOT fit on a CD.

We’ve also included our usual 10 Bonus Tracks, which contains some awesome tracks that just didn’t fit in the album.

Plus, this year we included something new, a BONUS ALBUM from our Brazilian brethren at Bootie Rio. The Brazilian mashup scene is exploding, and there’s no better showcase of that than the “Best of Bootie Rio 2010″ album, featuring 17 mashups from several Brazilian bootleggers.

This was a good year for mashups!

We had a tough time narrowing down the list! When we couldn’t decide between two mashups that used the same instrumental source material, we simply made our own hybrid mix versions, combining both mashups into one track. We also had to edit many of the tracks judiciously, in order to cram 23 mashups into 80 minutes. Geek out and listen to the unmixed versions to spot the differences!

A special shout-out to all the bootleggers whose work made this album possible. DJs From Mars (actually, they’re from Italy) are certainly the stand-out producers this year. But many of our old favorites and various Bootie DJs are also included, as well as a few newcomers to the mashup scene. Again, it was very hard to choose, and if anyone is bummed that their mashup didn’t make it, know this: we didn’t even include our own A Plus D tracks! We truly tried to be objective and choose what we thought were the best tracks that match the Bootie vibe and make for a great compilation.

Let us know what your favorite tracks are! Personally, our favorite this year is probably Titus Jones‘ “I Wanna Bulletproof Dancer” … unless we’re in a chill-out mode, then we’ve gotta go with LeeDM101′s gorgeous “(Find Myself) A Heap of Love.” But that’s just us right now. The truth is, ask us next week, and we might have a different answer for you!

Bootie Top 20 – October/November 2010

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on November 5th, 2010 by Adrian

Yeah, yeah, we know we sort of skipped a month, even though we DID release two, count ‘em, TWO Halloween Booootie CDs last week. But we know you can’t live on Halloween mashups alone, so we’re offering up another Top 20 to make it up to you.

And seeing as we’re leaving the country for a month to bring Bootie to Hong Kong, Bangkok, Sydney, and Melbourne, you better enjoy it, because who knows if we’ll have our shiz together after our Asia/Australia tour to cobble together a Top 10 for December? Especially since we’ll be working on the much-awaited “Best of Bootie 2010″ CD, which we’ll be releasing around Christmas. So enjoy this double-dose of the Bootie Top 10, sorted alphabetically by bootlegger.

Love, A+D

Dan Mei – Stronger Than Jolene (Dolly Parton vs. Britney Spears) - Denmark
Our current DJ book contains over 280 CDs, with an average of about 18 mashups on each. (Do the math!) With that volume of material, it’s not surprising that occasionally, some quality work gets lost in the mix, only to be rediscovered years later. This is one of those tunes, which has recently been getting lots of spins at Bootie, especially with the whole “early ’00s” retro thing happening … right on time! And personally, we loves us some Dolly!

Dave Wrangler – Summertime Stylo (DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince vs. Gorillaz) – Houston
Given the song’s lyrical content, this should have been in the Bootie Top 10 months ago. But this song’s chillaxed vibe made it a bit of a sleeper hit for us. Still, seeing as that we’re headed to Australia in a couple weeks to do the first Bootie Sydney and Bootie Melbourne, we’re actually right on time for summertime down under!

Daw-Gun – Love Butterfly (Lady Gaga vs. Crazy Town) – New York City
Daw-Gun has been an up-and-coming producer out of New York for a while now, and he really nails it on this one, taking Crazy Town’s one-hit wonder “Butterfly” and updating it with some Gaga, ten years after the fact. What was that I said about the early ’00s being “retro” already?

DJs FROM MARS DOUBLE SHOT
DJs From Mars – Love The Way You Lie In Paradise City (Eminem ft. Rihanna vs. Guns N’ Roses) – Torino, Italy
DJs From Mars – Teenage Gay (Katy Perry vs. OMD) – Torino, Italy
It’s no secret that we’re huge fans of DJs From Mars, the amazing DJ/production duo out of Italy who are known for wearing boxes over their heads while they DJ as much as they are for their sharp, club-ready mashups. Here are two tracks that merge current pop with classic ’80s material — hair metal or new wave, take your pick — and give it all their trademark bass-thumping electro makeover.

DJ Fac - Seven Nation Army’s Going On (Backstreet Boys vs. White Stripes) – Switzerland
Here’s another mashup “lost from the vaults” that we’ve recently rediscovered — and it never fails to get the crowd at Bootie jumping and singing along. You know, when we thought about the ’90s thing happening, we figured it would be iconic grunge and alternative bands that would be riding the retro wave, not Backstreet Boys. But hey, let’s face it, this is easier to sing along to than the Stone Temple Pilots, and everyone secretly loves this Backstreet Boys song. Yes, it looks they DO have it “going on for years.”

Faroff – Ray No Speak No Americano (Ray Charles vs. Yolanda Be Cool & DCUP) - Los Angeles / BrazIl
Brazil’s Faroff — by way of Boston and Los Angeles — is one of Bootie’s resident DJs, and his output has gotten increasingly more tuned to the dance floor. Here, he manages to bridge half a century in one song, taking Ray Charles’ 1954 classic (which was sampled in Kanye West’s ‘Gold Digger’) and blends it seamlessly with this past summer’s huge club hit “We Speak No Americano.”

CLUB CAN’T HANDLE ME DOUBLE SHOT
DJ Fox – Club Can’t Use Somebody (Kings of Leon vs. Flo Rida ft. David Guetta) – San Francisco
DJs From Mars – Where The Streets Can’t Handle Me (U2 vs. Flo Rida ft. David Guetta) - Torino, Italy
Speaking of big summertime club hits, you just couldn’t get away from this “Club Can’t Handle Me” song these past few months … so hey, why not breath some new life into it by fusing the dance hit with anthemic stadium rockers? The first, by SF’s own DJ Fox, uses Kings of Leon, while the second samples U2 and comes from DJs From Mars, who — yes, admittedly — we just couldn’t resist including for a third appearance on this list.

Hawkins – XXX (X vs. The XX) – St. Paul, Minnesota
LOVE this one. Wow. We’ve gotta admit, we didn’t have high hopes for this one when we first saw it. Most mashups with a clever pairing of band names or song titles usually come off sounding forced. Just because your mashup has a clever name,  doesn’t mean it’s necessarily going to SOUND clever. But this is a RARE exception. Hawkins gets it, producing a haunting mashup that takes a song with often overlooked dark themes (“Los Angeles”) and puts it into a more proper musical context. We love The XX, but after hearing so many mashups phoned in with simplistic, easy rap vocals plopped on top, this is a welcome surprise.

Jarod Ripley – Just The Way U Are (Bruno Mars vs. Freeez) - France
Bruno Mars is so hot right now, how could we not include him this month? French producer Jarod Ripley fuses him quite nicely with Freeez’s forgotten 1983 favorite “I.O.U.,” making for a beautiful blending of genres and decades. Nope, the ’80s will never truly die.

THE KLEPTONES DOUBLE SHOT
The Kleptones – Jump You Fucker (Cee Lo Green vs. Van Halen) – Brighton, UK
The Kleptones – Lung Cancer (Radiohead vs. Amerie J) – Brighton, UK
In the world of mashups, The Kleptones are one of our favorites, so we couldn’t resist doing a double shot! The first one is a brand-new track fusing Cee Lo’s expletive chorused YouTube hit with Van Halen and their awesome keyboard breakdown, specially made into a “Bootie edit” for your dancing pleasure. The second is off their “Shits & Giggles” compilation, turning Radiohead’s brooding song into something far funkier than it was originally intended.

DJ Lobsterdust - Celeplanes (M.I.A. vs. Rare Earth) - New York City
Speaking of funk … here, Rare Earth’s 1971 hit gets a contemporary update with M.I.A. on vocals. We used to pretty much reserve a spot on each month’s Top 10 for DJ Lobsterdust. But he’s been recently busy, so his mashup output has slowed down a wee bit; we had to dig back a few months to rediscover this gem.

DJ Morgoth – Carry On My Wayward Island (Kansas vs. Pendulum) – Berlin
This past year has seen several acapellas from classic ’70s and ’80s songs leaked onto the internet, greatly expanding the bootleg production options available to mashup producers. No longer limited to only using tired and overused rap and pop vocals, many producers are becoming extremely creative with what’s floating around out there. Bootie Berlin’s DJ Morgoth wasn’t even alive when Kansas’ classic rock opus first came out, but that hasn’t stopped him from turning the song into an electro club-banger! Genre-f*ck alert! And from what we can tell, this Pendulum track may not even be released in America, so once again, a mashup is exposing us to new music we would have otherwise never heard. You’re welcome, record companies.

Party Ben – Beat Sauce (Michael Jackson vs. Duck Sauce) – San Francisco
Considering that Duck Sauce is a collaboration between DJs Armand Van Helden and A-Trak, it’s no surprise that their name-dropping “Barbra Streisand” track (which actually has nothing to do with Babs) has become a big club hit. Here, Party Ben adds the vocals of “Beat It,” and replaces the spoken “Barbra Streisand” bit with a spoken “Michael Jackson” bit instead. Clever!

DJ Shyboy – Metro Life (T.I. & Rihanna vs. Berlin) – Los Angeles
Berlin was such a quintessential LA band back in the day, that it’s no surprise that an LA mashup producer came up with this one. Bootie LA’s Shyboy turns the T.I. and Rihanna hit into retro ’80s goodness. And we’re pretty damn sure you’ll be hearing this one on Bootie LA’s dancefloor for the ’80s vs Electropop Night later this month.

TITUS JONES DOUBLE SHOT
Titus Jones – I Wanna Bulletproof Dancer (La Roux vs. Whitney Houston vs. Robyn vs. Taylor Swift)
– Nashville
Titus Jones – Smells Like Ke$ha’s G6 (Ke$ha vs. Nirvana vs. Far East Movement vs. Britney Spears) - Nashville
I love it when Titus Jones writes his own blurbs: “While ‘Bulletproof’ is still enjoying major airplay, ‘Dancing On My Own’ is slowly working its way up the charts. I’m in love with this song, and I’m also in love with the ’80s. “Robyn song about dancing” plus “80’s Whitney Houston song about dancing” = Retro Dancing Magic. Plus, there’s always room for auto-tuned Robot Taylor Swift, right? Next up, Ke$ha’s latest hit single, ‘Take It Off,’ had a deliciously yummy club beat that I couldn’t resist using, not to mention the awesome party-ness of Far East Movement’s ‘Like A G6′ — and yes, that is auto-tuned Kurt Cobain robotic-ly singing over the electro-pop-goodness. Forgive me, Nirvana, for I have sinned.

DJ Tripp - Run This Firefly (Jay-Z ft. Rihanna vs. Owl City) - Santa Cruz, CA
We’ve featured several “Fireflies” mashups in the Top 10 over the past few months, but this is actually the one that gets played the most at Bootie. Plus, it’s produced by DJ Tripp, who is our trusted resident DJ at Bootie SF while we’re away in Asia and Australia this month, so it’s only fitting that he has an awesome track in this month’s Top 10.

Halloween Booootie CDs released!

Posted in Mashup Downloads, Top10 on October 31st, 2010 by Adrian

For the past two years, we’ve given out exclusive, limited-edition Halloween mashup CDs at our epic HALLOWEEN BOOOOTIE parties in San Francisco. (How epic? Well, last night we had nearly 1,600 costumed people crammed into the DNA Lounge!)

These annual compilations are given out to the first 300 people who show up in costume … but they’re just too good to be exclusive, so we’ve decided to release both of them online for everyone to enjoy!

Bootie Top 10 – September 2010

Posted in Top10 on September 21st, 2010 by Adrian

We might as well just start reserving a spot on each Bootie Top 10 for DJs From Mars, who have been so consistent with the quality of their mashups that we can’t help but include them every month. We’re in love with Kylie’s “All The Lovers” (even if most Americans have no idea how huge she is everywhere else in the world) but pairing it with the pop-punk guitars of blink-182 – along with DJs From Mars’ trademark big electro club beats — just sends this over the edge.

The Hood Internet are known for taking up-and-coming indie bands that most people have never heard of yet and pairing them with a well-known rapper. Does it downplay the indie cred, or just make it easier for hipsters to admit they actually like hip-hop? Probably a little of both, and this is no exception. Sleigh Bells give this simplistic Usher track a rougher edge that we feel it really needed.

Proving that oftentimes an artists’ B-sides can be just as good as their legitimate releases is this track from The Kleptones “leftovers” collection, Shits & Giggles. “Gimme Shelter” is our favorite Stones song — and now it’s got a funk makeover courtesy of Rick James. “Gimme Shelter” never sounded so fun and funky!

Jumping on the “college kids making mashups who are often called a band even though they’re just two guys with laptops” trend (see: Hood Internet, Super Mash Bros., White Panda, Ludachrist) comes a couple of guys from Princeton calling themselves The MashMaticians, who strike gold with a mashup that brings two scenes from opposite coasts together — New York indie-electro fused with LA Koreatown cool. Represent!

Mashup-Germany aka Ben Stiller, one of Bootie Berlin’s resident DJs, is currently on his “Recycling Revolution” tour, and we expect him to bring down the house at Bootie SF and Bootie Rio with this European-flavored dance-floor stormer. Yup, it still feels like summertime!

How do you take one of the most lyrically thought-provoking and beautiful songs ever written, and turn it into a banal, meaningless trifle? THIS is how. Or perhaps it goes the other way, giving emotional weight and “meaning” to David Lee Roth’s ridiculously insipid lyrics. Either way, this is unexpected and clever and has the “tee-hee factor.”

Seems Party Ben has been busy making a lot of remixes as of late, but here he makes a welcome return to “A vs. B” mashupdom with a wonderful pairing that bridges the multi-generational 44-year gap between these two songs, both sung by stong female artists.

Okay, we’ll admit it: we’re suckers for this Bronski Beat song. So updating the emotionally stirring’80s club anthem with Jay-Z & Rihanna’s somewhat dark-vibed pop song just simply works in our book. When Rihanna sings “Who’s gonna run this town tonight,” against Jimmy Somerville’s “Run away, turn away, run away” choruses, it takes on a new meaning —  as if each artist is finding a very different way to cope with life’s difficulties around the city and neighborhood they come from.

Can you tell that Titus Jones just moved to Nashville? By mashing up the jubilant pop songs of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Ke$ha with the country twang of Lady Antebellum, Titus makes the chart divas soundunexpectedly melancholic! Plus, bonus points for the most subtle DJ ID tag ever!

Whenever we skip town to bring Bootie to some other city, we always count on DJ Tripp to hold down the fort in San Francisco, and tracks like this prove why Bootie SF is in capable hands whenever we’re out of town. Here, Tripp steals back “Under Pressure” from Vanilla Ice and gives it to Taio Cruz, who sounds perfectly suited for this Queen & Bowie classic.

Bootie Top 10 – August 2010

Posted in Top10 on August 17th, 2010 by Adrian

We just threw one of our biggest Bootie parties ever — the epic 7-Year Itch Anniversary in San Francisco — and in less than two weeks, we leave for Burning Man to throw Bootie BRC out in the middle of the desert. So we figured if we didn’t hustle and get this month’s Bootie Top 10 done RIGHT NOW, it wouldn’t get posted until sometime in the middle of September. And we know how you guys HATE that.

So here, without further ado, are the summertime mashup jams that have been blowin’ up our iPods (and CD decks) this past month. RIGHT-CLICK TO DOWNLOAD!

A Plus D – Dancing Since U Been Gone (Robyn vs. Kelly Clarkson) – San Francisco
Why isn’t Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” a smash in the U.S.? It’s a summertime hit over in Europe, but America has been slow to catch on. Perhaps by mashing it up with a #1 U.S. single from five years ago — in this case, the over-produced pop-rock of Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone” — we can help Robyn’s chances of making it in America.

For the more dance-floor-friendly REMIX, check out New York Post’s PopWrap blog, where it’s an exclusive download — you can only get it here!

DEEP/BLK vs. Marc Johnce – Waiting for Bulletproof at First Sight (La Roux vs. Kylie Minogue vs. Gwen Stefani) – Nuremberg, Germany
Sometimes it takes a while for a European song to hit here in America, and nothing proves that more than “Bulletproof,” which we were shocked to discover finally became a Top 10 hit in the U.S. nearly a year after it was released! (We knew something was up when the Bootie crowd started singing along!) This mashup is nearly a year old, but considering La Roux only recently became a hit in the States, we’re going to forgive ourselves for missing this one the first time around!

DJs From Mars – California Jump (Katy Perry feat. Snoop Dogg vs. Van Halen) – Torino, Italy
DJs From Mars are probably our favorite new bootleggers on the scene, putting their own indelible — and instantly recognizable stamp — on everything they do. What’s their formula? Start it off as a simple A+B mashup with a beat, then, after it settles in — BAM! — thick, bass-heavy electro comes charging in, and LOTS of it, complete with filter sweeps and big dramatic moments. The result? Instant club bangers like this one, ready to rock a dance floor!

Go Home Productions – Smells Like Rockin’ Robin (Nirvana vs. Michael Jackson) – Watford, UK
Mark Vidler, the man behind Go Home Productions, just played the Bootie SF 7-Year Anniversary party, and to commemorate the occasion, he put together a special three-song EP entitled “Rockin’ In San Francisco.” This has quickly become the standout track, blowing up the twitterverse and on the road to going viral. What makes this one special is its use of Nirvana’s vocals rather than music, fusing it with Michael Jackson’s “Rockin’ Robin” backing, and its oh-so-happy and innocent tweedle-dee-dee’s — putting a brand new spin on “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” resulting in a case of dead pop stars uniting in perfect harmony.

The Kleptones – Lazy Dancer (Silversun Pickups vs. Yuksek) – Brighton, UK
We were elated when The Kleptones released “Shits & Giggles,” a new album of mashups a mere six months after their last magnum opus. Granted, it’s an “odds-and-sods” B-sides collection of tracks that didn’t make it on to their previous albums, but considering they usually take four years between albums, we’re just happy there’s new material — especially when it’s as gorgeous as this track. We know this won’t be for everyone, but every now and then we have to include a very personal choice on the Bootie Top 10, and not only do we love the Silversun Pickups (we just saw them play an epic homecoming show at The Greek in LA ) we also have a soft spot for 8-bit-sounding electronica.

LeeDM101 – Blue Boys Cure Everything (Phoenix vs. The Cure vs. Headman) – South West UK
LeeDM101 has quietly come up through the ranks to become one of the best bootleggers on the scene, and this well-crafted mashup proves his winning streak. Taking indie darlings Phoenix (who prove that most “overnight success stories” take ten years) and mashing them up seamlessly with a dark Cure classic — and then adding more beats from Headman — make this a gem of track.

Martinn – Ridin’ Clocks (Jason Derülo vs. Coldplay) – Netherlands
Martinn makes his first appearance on the Bootie Top 10 with this great mashup of two very different pop songs from two very different genres, yet blend seamlessly into a track both beautiful and smooth, evoking thoughts of driving down the highway, alone on a starry night, thinking about life and love and everything that comes with it.

Rad Bad – Moving Da Royalty (Will Smith vs. Daft Punk) – South Australia / New York City
We get mashup submissions in our email in box every day, and we’re sorry to say, well … many of them aren’t quite THERE yet. So it’s always a nice surprise when a good one comes along, and we have to go back and look and be like, “Where did THAT come from?” In this case, it comes from South Aussie DJ — and recent New York City transplant — Rad Bad, who did the smart thing and sent us his “most famous mash,” and … we can see why! Cheeky and fun, and makes us want to hear more!

DJ Schmolli – Big Booty Bitches In Miami (Bombs Away vs. LMFAO vs. Busta Rhymes vs. Sir Mix-A-Lot) – Vienna, Austria
How did the guy known for his Slayer mashups go on to make THIS? Yup, that’s why we LOVE DJ Schmolli … not to mention why we love the “no genre is safe” motto of mashup culture. Schmolli just released his first “mixtape” in ages, “Pirate Nation Vol. 1,” and also just played Bootie Rio, where we’re sure this was a big hit of the night! Finally, an anthem for the curvier girls out shakin’ it!

DJ Topcat – Folsom Prison Gangstaz (Johnny Cash vs. Eazy-E) - Seattle
With this brilliant mashup, DJ Topcat makes an unlikely connection between the old-school country music of Johnny Cash and the ghetto gangsta rap of Eazy-E — after all, both artists, in their respective days, were known for their “outsider” status, and frank honest lyrics that glorified violence and guns. And here, despite the separation of generations, race, and culture, it all comes together. This is one of the things we love best about mashup culture: seeing two artists — who seem incredibly disparate and with completely different fan bases — and finding that both are actually just two sides of the same coin.

Bootie Top 10 x2 – June/July 2010

Posted in Top10 on July 12th, 2010 by Adrian

Ever since we got back from two months on tour, we’ve had a bit of a rough time getting ourselves back onto a “regular” schedule, as you can probably tell by this, yet another overdue Bootie Top 10 list. In fact, it’s starting to become a “Top 10″ in name only, as we just can’t help including two months’ worth of mashups. Yup, double the mashups, double the fun!

We just did “Lady Gaga vs. Madonna Night” a few weeks ago at Bootie SF, and it was our second biggest Bootie party ever, with nearly 1,500 people. A lot of you have been asking for some of the mashups we played that night, so if you’re a bit Gaga-adverse, you might want to skip around a bit.  However, we also have a healthy dose of other genres such as electro, hip-hop, etc., so there should be something for everyone.

Without further ado … sorted (mostly) alphabetically by bootlegger…

DJ BC – Eyes Without A Bootie (Billy Idol vs. John Blu) – Boston
Bootie Boston’s own DJ BC provides us with a new slow jam to ramp down the night. And yes, we’re suckers for a mashup that name-drops our party’s name!

Faroff - You Ring Me Round (Like A Telephone) (Lady Gaga vs. Beyoncé vs. Dead Or Alive) – Brasília/Los Angeles
The video for this keeps getting pulled down from YouTube, thanks to Lady Gaga’s label (who were all about having Bootie mash her up before her fame, the hypocrites!) But here’s the audio mashup, as Brazil’s Faroff realizes that the classic ’80s hit, “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” is one of those perfect pop songs that seems to magically mash up with nearly everything!

CALIFORNIA GURLS DOUBLE SHOT!
DJ Digital Dave - Back To Cali Gurls (Bootie Edit) (Notorious B.I.G. vs. Katy Perry) – Pittsburgh
Mash2Mix – California Tik Tok Gurls (Bootie Edit) (Katy Perry vs. KeSha) – The Netherlands
Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” is definitely this year’s summertime jam, which is why we wish someone would leak a clean acapella track from it. But until then, we’ve got these two mashups that simply HAD to be done: The first makes the inevitable lyrical connection between Biggie and Katy and their enjoyment of all California has to offer, while the second simply proves that this summer’s biggest pop song is basically the same as last winter’s biggest pop song, which is why so many DJs and producers have mashed these two up. (This was the first one out of the gate though, and the best, in our humble opinion– it was a Bootie exclusive to NY Post’s “Pop Wrap” blog last month, read about it here.)

Go Home Productions – How Soon Is Independence? (Destiny’s Child vs. The Smiths) – Watford, UK
Go Home Productions, aka Mark Vidler, is considered by many to be one of the early bootleg scene’s biggest stars. He began mashing up in 2002 and did both the legally-released “Rapture Riders” mashup (Blondie vs. The Doors) as well as the UK-only Mashed CD, a full album of copyright-cleared mashups. Recently, he’s made a much-welcome return to the mashup world, such as this with this track, which uses classic source material such as The Smiths. And he’ll be playing at Bootie’s 7-Year Itch Anniversary in San Francisco on August 14th!

Lazyellow – Blah Blah Blah Chillin Romance (Ke$ha vs. Lady Gaga vs. Wale) – London, UK
Totally infectious club-banger mashup from a newcomer to the mashup scene, Lazyellow from the U.K. We were not big fans of Ke$ha’s “Blah Blah Blah,” but hearing it mashed with thumpy beats and Lady Gaga’s “rah-rah-ah-ah-ah, etc.” as a chorus makes it awesome.

LeeDM101 – (Find Myself) A Heap of Love (Florence & The Machine vs. Depeche Mode vs. Imogen Heap) – South West UK
Simply a stunner of a slow jam, and our favorite Florence & The Machine mashup thus far. Gorgeous and beautiful. Also, it’s nice to see Lee revisiting his Depeche Mode fan roots!

DJ LOBSTERDUST DOUBLE SHOT!
DJ Lobsterdust – Knock Out Eileen (LL Cool J vs. Dexy’s Midnight Runners) – New York City
DJ Lobsterdust – Two Stop (Journey vs. Grizzly Bear) – New York City
Our favorite mashup producer from New York City (and perennial Bootie Top 10 contributor) DJ Lobsterdust returns … and we couldn’t pick just one! The first is a smile-inducing genre-clash of ’80s hits … one that really knocked us out! The second forces indie hipsters to embrace their inner Journey. And come on, who doesn’t secretly love “Don’t Stop Believin’? It’s practically the Bootie theme song!

MadMixMustang – Pac-Man Inferno (Buckner & Garcia vs. The Tramps) – The Netherlands
Speaking of smile-inducing ’80s mashups, this ridiculous combination has us longing for a hot tub time machine so we can take it back with us and blast it on a boombox at the video arcade (while rockin’ our feathered hair and Jordache jeans, of course!) We also love that MadMixMustang uses a lot of source material that other mashup producers overlook … I mean, c’mon, “Pac-Man Fever”? Totally tubular.

MARC JOHNCE IS A “MONSTER” DOUBLE SHOT!
Marc Johnce – Monster Never Can Say Goodbye (Lady Gaga vs. The Communards) – Nuremberg, Germany
Marc Johnce – Monster Will Come Back (Lady Gaga vs. Holy Ghost!) – Nuremberg, Germany
We had plenty of “Just Dance” and “Bad Romance” mashups for “Lady Gaga vs. Madonna Night” at Bootie, but none of “Monster.” Fortunately, Marc Johnce came through at the last minute with not one, but two mashups of what’s rumored to be Gaga’s next single. OMG, and even more ’80s retro goodness with a forgotten gem from The Communards! And then for the more indie fans, we got a very cool version with Brooklyn electro duo Holy Ghost!

Mashup-Germany – Hit And Drop On All The Single Ladies (Beyoncé vs. Rihanna vs. Ray Charles vs. Snoop Dogg) – Cologne, Germany
What’s great about this track is its use of the timeless Ray Charles track, “Hit the Road Jack.” Plus, the Bootie crowd never seems to tire of “Single Ladies.” Here, Mashup-Germany uses his signature multi-song combo style to wonderful effect, even adding in some “Drop It Like It’s Hot” in the mix. Never fails to get everyone’s hands up!

Mighty Mike – Heart-Shaped Desires (Nirvana vs. Muse) – France
Released eight months ago, this one is a bit of a iPod sleeper hit for us, combining two of favorite band’s songs into a dark concoction, full of creepy cool menace.

LADY GAGA vs. MADONNA DOUBLE SHOT!
Mkaio – Alejandro (Mkaio’s Holiday Smash) (Lady Gaga vs. Madonna) – Salt Lake City, Utah BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE
Nathan Scot – Alejandro De La Isla Bonita (Lady Gaga vs. Madonna) – San Francisco
What would “Lady Gaga vs. Madonna Night” be at Bootie without actual Lady Gaga vs. Madonna mashups? The classic “Queen of Pop” dukes it out with the current “Queen of Pop” in a mashup duel using Gaga’s current single, “Alejandro.” The first is a “Bootie Exclusive,” while the second showcases Lady Gaga’s obvious influence for “Alejandro” (I’m talking to you, “La Isla Bonita”) as well as both artists’ mutual love of Latino culture (or at least Latino boys!)

Mochi Beats – Time After Romance (Lady Gaga vs. Cyndi Lauper vs. Three 6 Mafia) – Orange County, California
“Bad Romance” is a such a dance floor stormer, that this darker atmospheric (yet still thumpy) version from mashup scene newcomer Mochi Beats comes off as quite an unexpected surprise!

Stein-Vidar – Like A Virgin At The Y.M.C.A. (Bootie Edit) (Madonna vs. The Village People) – Norway
Another newcomer to the mashup scene, Norway’s Stein-Vidar brings the classic pop cheese with this ridonkulous mashup. The songs work great together, and we added back in some of the original “Y.M.C.A.” (hence the Bootie Edit) just so when you feel the need to do the requisite Y-M-C-A arm gestures!

Thriftshop XL – Abba Alpha Beat Beet Roots Of All Evil (ABBA vs. The Bloody Beetroots vs. Alphabeat) – Scotland
How do you turn classic pop cheese into electro-breakbeat madness? Like this. Wait for it, wait for it … and then there goes ABBA, down the rabbit hole.

Titus Jones – Imma Stop Loving Drugs (Ke$ha vs. Glee Cast vs. La Roux vs. Black Eyed Peas vs. Iglu & Hartly) – Clarksville, Arkansas
One of our favorite mashup producers, known for his multi-song, multi-layered creations, returns with this fantastic pop gem. Titus Jones just graduated from college — someone hire this guy for audio production, he’s awesome! Bonus points for using the Glee Cast version of “Don’t Stop Believin’. Did we mention it’s practically the Bootie theme song? :-)

Bootie Top 25 (Extra Late Post-Tour Edition) – April/May 2010

Posted in Top10 on May 20th, 2010 by Adrian

As many of you know, we – A Plus D, aka Adrian & Mysterious D – have been on tour for the better part of two months, doing Bootie parties all over the globe. First, we were in Europe for most of April, then back to San Francisco, then off to Hong Kong and Singapore, then back again to San Francisco, and then off to Brazil. Whew!

Needless to say, due to our intense travel schedule, we’ve been regretfully neglectful of the Bootie Top 10 these past couple months – not to mention posting tour reports! But we figure you’d rather have free mashups first, and tour reports later, so in an effort to make it up to you, we’re not only doubling it up here, but also throwing in a bunch of mashup “double shots,” bringing the total of mashups downloads to 25.

Many of these were discovered along our travels in Europe, while others were our “DJ secret weapons” on tour. Some are older gems that we recently rediscovered. We’ve even got a few “Bootie Exclusives” in the mix – tracks you won’t find anywhere else.

Sorted (mostly) alphabetically by bootlegger … start right-clickin’!

“RUDE BOY” DOUBLE SHOT
A Plus D - Decode Rude Boy (Rihanna vs. Paramore) – San Francisco, USA
DJ Schmolli – Rude Boy Resort (Rihanna vs. Papa Roach) – Vienna, Austria
Seeing as that “Rude Boy” was one of the biggest hits of the spring, of course we couldn’t pick just one! The first is from ourselves, re-imagining Rihanna as if she were an angst-ridden teenage vampire from one of the “Twilight” movies. The second is a total guilty pleasure from one of our favorite bootleggers, DJ Schmolli, who returns to his hard rock roots with this unexpected genre-clash featuring the much-maligned (but admittedly catchy) Papa Roach. So wrong… yet so right! Are we on time for the 2000s retro-revival yet?

THE YOUNG PUNX MASHUP ALBUM DOUBLE SHOT

A Plus D – Final Telephone (Lady Gaga vs. The Young Punx) – San Francisco, USA
DJ BC – Unbelievable Juice and Gin (EMF vs. The Young Punx) – Boston, USA
In April, the music blog AudioPorn Central teamed up with the UK band The Young Punx to produce a mashup album based on the indie-electro group’s second album, “Mashpop & Punkstep.” Simon Iddol assembled a team of bootleggers (including ourselves and Bootie Boston’s DJ BC) to mash up each of the record’s dozen tracks, and it was released on the same day as the album. Here are two tracks from the “Mashed Popped Punk” project – the first makes Lady Gaga sound as if she’s fronting a cool new indie band, and the second gives EMF’s “Unbelievable” a Brit-rap makeover.

“CALIFORNIA LOVE” DOUBLE SHOT
BootOX – California Skank (Tupac vs. Fatboy Slim) – Munich, Germany
Loo & Placido – Californication (Tupac vs. Roger Troutman vs. Plump DJs vs. Zero Cash) – France
As Californians, we felt we were exporting a bit of our own “California love” while on tour. Now the love get returned, quite literally, by both Bootie Munich’s DJ BootOX and France’s Loo & Placido (who just played Bootie in SF and LA). Two different takes, one for the main floor, the other for Electro-Bootie.

Clivester – Heartbreaking Maps (Yeah Yeah Yeahs vs. Metronomy) – Vienna, Austria
We rediscovered this one while compiling and mixing our electro-flavored “Bootie Banger Mix” for the guys over at Dope.sg, who produced the Bootie Singapore party. How did we miss this one back in August? Beautiful and haunting, yet still made with the dance floor in mind. Remind us to play this at Burning Man just before dawn!

Clockwork – Office Musik (Lil Wayne vs. “The Office” Theme Song) – Los Angeles, USA
We love “The Office. Our first night back from our European tour was spent curled up with the Tivo, catching up on a month’s worth of episodes. So this track’s appearance on the Top 10 should come as no surprise. Cheeky, silly, and well-produced … who knew “The Office” theme would work so well with Lil Wayne and a hip-hop beat?

DJS FROM MARS DOUBLE SHOT
DJs From Mars – Enter Telephone (Lady Gaga feat. Beyoncé vs. Metallica) – Torino, Italy
DJs From Mars - Radio Tik Tok (Ke$ha vs. Queen) – Torino, Italy
We have to thank Bootie Berlin’s DJ Morgoth for helping us discover our new favorite DJ/producer team, DJs From Mars, who hail from Italy. Their basic formula is always to start with a basic A+B framework – then they add the “oomph” in the way of thick bass and buzzsaw instrumentation, which takes a basic mashup and turns it into a throbbing electro club-banger.

Dunproofin – Only Mashups Can Break Your Heart (David Bowie vs. St. Etienne vs. U2 vs. Soup Dragons) – Aberdeen, Scotland
We’re big fans of both David Bowie and electro-tinged dance music – so what’s not to like here? Dunproofin gives one of our favorite tracks from “Ziggy Stardust” a dance beat by mixing in a formerly-forgotten ’90s electronica song (remember when they called it “electronica”?) and mashes up something unexpected.

DJ Fox - Come See About Down (Jay Sean vs. The Supremes) – San Francisco, USA BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
Fox is one of our favorite local San Francisco bootleggers, and we’re grateful that he slips us a few tracks before anyone else gets to hear them. He sent this over yesterday and while we normally like to “live” with a mashup for a while before we decide to put it in the Top 10, we couldn’t resist jumping the gun a bit with this one. Simply lovely.

Go Home Productions – Virgin O’Riley (Madonna vs. The Who) – Watford, UK
Aaaaaand … he’s back! A much-welcome (and long overdue) return from Mark Vidler, part of the UK’s “first wave” of bootleggers, and one of the early mashup scene’s biggest stars. This turned out to be one of our “secret weapons” on tour, never once failing to get the entire crowd to sing along. An instant classic.

The Kleptones – This Song Smells (Nirvana vs. Blur) – Brighton, UK  BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
Take two of the most iconic songs from the ’90s — both of which are rockin’, yet shockingly danceable — and put them together. Two words: Can’t. Fail. The original version of this track is on The Kleptones’ Uptime/Downtime album, but Eric Kleptone was nice enough to give us this unmixed version when he stayed at our SF apartment for a week. This turned out to be another “secret weapon” on tour, and we often closed our sets with this.

Ludachrist – Pon De Foley (Major Lazer vs. Harold Faltermeyer) – Los Angeles, USA
This track was all abuzz on the blogosphere a couple months ago, and had we actually put out a Top 10 in a timely manner, we wouldn’t now be looking like we’re late to the party. Oh well, whatever. This track still lights up a dance floor with its ingenious recreation of the classic ’80s keyboard line from “Axel F” by using the modern blips and bloops of the Major Lazer song, “Pon de Floor.” Clever.

MadMixMustang – Take Me On the Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne vs. a-ha) – The Netherlands
Two musical polar opposites from the ’80s — new wave and heavy metal — come together in one brilliant mashup. We love extreme genre-clashes when they just seem to magically work, and this track from the always-dependable MadMixMustang certainly delivers the “wow” factor.

Mashup-Germany - Imagine One Day (So Far Away) (Matisyahu vs. John Lennon vs. Blink 182 vs. Gentleman vs. Bob Marley) – Frankfurt, Germany
We played with Mashup-Germany at both Bootie Berlin and Bootie Hamburg, and while he certainly knows how to tear up a dance floor, we have to admit that his “slow jam” mashups are also something REALLY special. This multi-layered mashterpiece is simply a gorgeous piece of work. By interweaving the vocals of four different artists from four very different genres, it’s revealed that they’re all basically singing about the same universal thing: love.

MIGHTY MIKE DOUBLE SHOT
Mighty Mike – Pressure Time (Queen & David Bowie vs. MGMT) – France
Mighty Mike – Kinda Fair (Lily Allen vs. Robert Palmer) – France
Mighty Mike has turned out to be one of our favorite bootleggers, consistently producing some great mashup work. Both of these tunes have become a bit of “sleeper hits” at Bootie, with “Pressure Time” getting requests, ” and “Kinda Fair” often getting played in the early part of the night, where it’s perfect for getting your drink on.

DJ Morgoth – Sing Hallelujah To The New Divide (Linkin Park vs. Dr. Alban & Yamboo) – Berlin, Germany
Only Bootie Berlin’s DJ Morgoth could take Linkin Park and make them sound so … gay! Sure, he says its “Eurodance,” but we all know what THAT means! While this might alienate Linkin Park fans (what? a mashup without Jay-Z?) — not to mention fans of Eurodance — it puts a big smile on our face every time we hear it!

Obvious Productions – Standing In The Way Of Your Friends (Gossip vs. Justice vs. Simian) – North Wales, UK
Do you know why we love going on tour? Because we can then play American artists like Gossip (who remain a marginalized cult act Stateside) and get a HUGE reaction because “Standing In The Way of Control” was such a big hit everywhere else in the world. Pair that with another artist like France’s Justice, who are also WAY more popular outside the U.S., and it’s like shooting fish in a barrel. Years ago, the creator of this track (whose secret identity was revealed to us on tour as Soundhog) anonymously attributed it to “Obvious Productions,” because he thought it was such a simple mashup idea, that he didn’t want to take credit for it. Yet, what he doesn’t realize is that the simplest ideas are often simply the best. A rediscovered gem, and a total “secret weapon.”

DJ Shyboy - Tour De Miami (LMFAO vs. Kraftwerk) – Los Angeles, USA
When LA’s DJ Shyboy played this before our set at Bootie Berlin, we simply HAD to have it! Not sure if this dumbs down the electro krautrock of Kraftwerk, or strangely elevates the joke of LMFAO to something, well … something a little LESS jokey … but either way, it works for us! An oldie, but a goodie.

Sugamotor – Heat My Body (Mariah Carey vs. Massive Attack) – France
Taken from the sex-themed mashup album Sex Mashine, which was compiled by Sugamotor himself, this track is perfect for getting that certain someone “in the mood.” Smooth, sexy, and … kinda dark, in a very cool, moody way. Plus, extra props for using two artists highly under-utilized in the mashup world.

DJ Tripp – Papa Was A Ghost (The Temptations vs. Deadmau5) - Santa Cruz, USA BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
While we were away on tour, Tripp was the DJ who held it down in our absence at Bootie SF, and tracks like this showcase why we left him in charge of the decks. How do you take an old-school classic by The Temptations and make it sound weirdly current? Why, by having them sing with Deadmau5, of course!

Victor Menegaux – Nookieflies (Owl City vs. Limp Bizkit) – Seattle, USA
Victor says “I was laughing the entire time I made this.” We are so sick of the earnest saccharine sweetness of that damn, unavoidable “Fireflies” song, that hearing Fred Durst rap something as inane as “Nookie” over the top of it (possibly the worst song from the past 15 years) makes us laugh too!

Bootie Top 10 (or 20, or 30) coming soon, we promise!

Posted in Top10 on May 18th, 2010 by Adrian

Just got back home to San Francisco after a whirlwind two months of touring Europe, Asia, and Brazil, with brief pit stops back here in SF to keep the parties running. We were overextended, so needless to say, we are now WAY overdue for a Bootie Top 10 posting!

We promise, we will be rectifying this VERY soon! And we’ll make it up to you guys too, by making it a Top 20 (or maybe a Top 30?) We owe you a couple months’ worth, at least!

One thing we learned in our travels was how to say “sorry” in so many languages:

Entschuldigung, desculpe, désolé, anteeksi, atsiprašau, bocsánat!

Check back here soon!

Bootie Top 10 – March 2010

Posted in Top10 on March 4th, 2010 by Adrian

We’re pressed for time this month, as we’ve got Bootie Berlin’s DJ Morgoth here in California for the week, so we’re just going to cut the blather and do a quick intro instead. Besides, does anyone even bother to even read our blurbs, or do you guys just skip it and get straight to the downloads? (Leave comments below to let us know!)

UPDATE: Okay, so you guys let us know, and it seems that at least a few of you appreciate the blurbs. So we’ve updated this Bootie Top 10 with our comments for each track.

Anyway, we’ve actually got twelve (count ‘em, 12!) tracks for you, due to having two “Double Shots,” the first featuring Kate Bush (including an interesting hybrid mashup/cover from UK artist Dan Black) and the second featuring Chicago’s The Hood Internet (we couldn’t decide between STV SLV and ABX, so we just picked both!) We’ve also got a couple of “Bootie Exclusives” for you — mashups you won’t find anywhere else — as well as a bunch of other gems, including tracks both brand-new and a couple months old (which gives us enough time to determine that they’re fantastic Bootie party tracks!

Enjoy, and start right-clickin’! – A+D

DOUBLE SHOT: Kate Bush
Apollo Zero – I’m Ready & Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush vs. Kano) – New Orleans
Dan Black – Get Into Cloudbusting (Kate Bush vs. Dan Black covering Madonna) – UK
We’re both big fans of Kate Bush, so we when had the opportunity to do a “double shot” of mashups that feature the iconic ’80s British songstress, we couldn’t resist. The first gives her biggest hit, “Running Up That Hill,” a nice disco backbeat, while the second is an inspired mashup/cover hybrid from Dan Black, who sings Madonna’s “Get Into The Groove” over a remixed version of “Cloudbusting.”

Bassnectar – Where Is My Mind? (Bassnectar Remix) (The Pixies vs. Bassnectar) – San Francisco
This starts off innocuously enough, womming and throbbing away before mutating into the most heavy electro breakbeat version of the Pixies you’ve ever heard. Seeing as that Bassnectar is probably the “biggest name DJ” to come out of the Burning Man scene, we can’t help but imagine this blasting out of a ginormous sound system out on the playa at dawn. “Where is my mind?” … indeed!

DJ BC – Could You Be Love Gamed? (Bob Marley vs. Lady Gaga) – Boston BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
There haven’t been very many killer mashups of “Love Game,” but here, Bootie Boston’s DJ BC rectifies that situation, making an unlikely lyrical connection between Lady Gaga and Bob Marley. Could this be love?

Copycat – I Was Made For A Heavy Cross (Kiss vs. The Gossip) – Sweden
Kiss is a rock band that dabbled in disco back when it was originally popular in the ’70s. The Gossip are quite a different rock band that — like many of their indie-rock contemporaries — are also currently dabbling in disco. So why NOT put these two together? Apparently, disco is NOT dead!

The Face Melters – Ice Ice Tik Tok (Vanilla Ice vs. Ke$ha) - San Francisco BOOTIE EXCLUSIVE!
The debut track from The Face Melters, a collaboration between frequent Bootie Top 10 contributor DJ Fox and his accomplice Kool Karlo. What can we say that Pop Wrap’s Ryan Brockington at the New York Post hasn’t already said? “The dollar store version of Lady Gaga, both in name spelling and song yelling, has recently been pureed with one of the ’80s most quintessential bleach-tipped rappers … take a moment to accept the fact that Ke$ha may just be the Vanilla Ice of our era. Yikes.”

DOUBLE SHOT: The Hood Internet
ABX of The Hood Internet – Ignition (Keep It Remixing Louder) (R. Kelly vs. Major Lazer) - Chicago
STV SLV of The Hood Internet – I Ain’t That Earthquake (Wallpaper. vs. Little Boots) – Chicago
We couldn’t pick just one! Besides, we didn’t want to play favorites between The Hood Internet’s ABX and STV SLV, so they get one each here … and when both tracks are this good, why not? R. Kelly gets some hipster cred mashed-up with Major Lazer, and speaking of hipster cred, you get a double dose of both with STV SLV’s combo of two very-now “bands of the moment.”

The Kleptones – Welcome Back (Guns N’ Roses vs. Chemical Brothers vs. LFO vs. Basement Jaxx vs. Missy Elliott) - Brighton, UK
The Chemical Brothers always approached dance music with very big, rock ‘n’ roll beats (hence the term “big beat”) so it actually makes kinda perverse sense that The Kleptones would mash them (and several others) up with some classic Guns ‘N Roses. This is a special unmixed, “single” version – the original appears on their new mashup album Upside/Downside.

MadMixMustang – Take Me On The Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne vs. a-ha) – The Netherlands
We gotta admit — the first time we played this at Bootie, we weren’t really sure how it was gonna go over. But we shouldn’t have worried — this is the classic sort of A+B mind-fuck mashup that made Bootie’s reputation. In fact, it’s mashups like that originally made us fall in love with the genre to begin with.

DJ Tripp – How Low In The House (Ludacris vs. Steve Aoki) – Santa Cruz, CA
We’re loving the new Ludacris single, and it’s even better coupled with some bangin’ electro dance-floor beats, mashed together courtesy of Bootie regular, DJ Tripp, whose output has been nothing but quality as of late.

The White Panda – Fireflies Goin’ Down (Yung Joc vs. Owl City) – Chicago/Los Angeles
The White Panda mixtape amply proves that you can pretty much plop a rap vocal over just about ANYTHING, which unfortunately makes most hip-hop mashups sound a bit trite and uninspired … and not really all that edgy. This track however, is a notable exception, adding some much-needed dirty street-cred to the overly-precious sicky-sweet sounds of that damn “Fireflies” song. Catchy as all get out. Meet me at Bootie … it’s goin’ down!

Bootie Top 10 – February 2010

Posted in Top10 on February 2nd, 2010 by Adrian

We skipped the month of January, since we had just put out the Best of Bootie 2009 CD. But damn, there was such an abundance of good material these past two months, that we easily could have put together a Top 20 instead of a Top 10! But we’re just gonna save the rest for March… Right-click to download!

A Plus D – Don’t You Want My Bad Romance (Lady Gaga vs. Human League) – San Francisco
We knew we were taking a gamble when we went ahead and put this on the “Best of Bootie 2009″ CD — barely a week before the end of year! Sure, call us biased … but fortunately, we’ve been getting tons of great feedback and reports of hearing this track in clubs and at parties everywhere! Lady Gaga goes New Wave! And it sounds like both artists need some serious relationship counselling. :-)

DJ Jay-R of C.H.A.O.S. Productions – Ke$ha Just Wants To Have Fun (Ke$ha vs. Cyndi Lauper) – Oakland
Just listen to the lyrics of Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok,” and really, isn’t is basically just a raunchier, more updated version of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” anyway? This track is fun, flirty, and ready to rock the party. A much-welcome comeback for Oakland’s own DJ Jay-R.

Jeff Jones – Party In The Empire State (Jay-Z & Alicia Keys vs. Miley Cyrus) – Boston
For our first Bootie NYC party in three months, we just KNEW we had to drop a mashup of the instantly-iconic “Empire State of Mind.” Only one problem … there weren’t that many out there! But mere minutes before we left for the party, we found this simple-yet-effective A+B. And let’s face it, with Miley name-dropping Jay-Z, coupled with the whole “hands up” vibe of both songs, these two were obviously meant to be together!
NEW YORK CITY BONUS TRACK!
Purple Crush – NYC Bad Girl Lovegame (Purple Crush vs. Lady Gaga) – Los Angeles
We’re feeling the love with New York lately, perhaps due to the fact that we unexpectedly had our biggest Bootie party ever there — over 840 people! It was crazy, so we’re throwing in an NYC-inspired bonus track, created by Purple Crush, a Brooklyn-based electro duo who recently moved to LA. We love it when artists mash up their own tunes!

The Kleptones – Cubikini (Bikini Kill vs. 808 State) – Brighton, UK
From the album Upside/Downtime
This is the soundtrack of our lives back in the early ’90s, where a typical weekend might consist of going to see a Riot Grrrl girl band play at some trashy punk club down the street, before heading out to an all-night rave in a warehouse on the outskirts of town. Did The Kleptones do the same thing? We love hearing surprising and rarely (if ever) used source material in a mashup, such as Bikini Kill’s “Rebel Girl.”

DJ Le Clown - Billie Bootie Lazer (Michael Jackson vs. Major Lazer) - Paris
For the record, Adrian HATES Major Lazer, finding its bloops and bleets incredibly annoying. D, on the other hand, loves the crazy sampling sounds and ridiculous rhythms. But here, we find some middle ground, as MJ gives a jolt of familiar melodicism to the modern, oh-so-hipster, “lazer” sound.

MadMixMustang – Is This Digital Love? (Bob Marley vs. Daft Punk) - The Netherlands
Here’s another mashup that we like, in spite of its source material. Neither one of us are especially big fans of reggae — but Daft Punk sounds so shockingly well-suited paired up with Bob Marley, taking an electronic jam and turning it into anthem of love and unity. It’s the dance floor equivalent of “warm fuzzies.”

Marc Johnce – Mr. Crowley Might Like It Louder (Ozzy Osbourne vs. Dada, Obernik & Harris vs. Amanda Blank vs. Major Lazer) – Germany
We love it when hard rock artists from the ’80s get the electro-dance bootleg treatment, especially when they sound as bangin’ as this. How awesome is Ozzy’s “Mr. Crowley” for a dark Electro-Bootie set? Dude, it rocks.

Mashup-Germany – Sexy Bitch In Memphis (Akon vs. Justin Timberlake vs. Robyn vs. The Eagles vs. Cher vs. David Guetta) – Germany
Can rap lyrics get any more shallow and ridiculous? What’s left to do but take them and mash them up with other artists, both probable (Hi, Justin!) and highly unlikely (OMG, the Eagles!). A nice multi-mash from hot newcomer Mashup-Germany.

DJ Morgoth - Any Way You Want My Woman (Journey vs. Wolfmother vs. MSTRKRFT) – Berlin
Wherein, Bootie Berlin’s own DJ Morgoth discovers the awesomeness of a classic American arena rock band from the ’80s by mashing up a song of theirs that came out before he was even born! See? Journey’s music really is the new Great American Songbook! And it sounds hot mashed-up with the Aussie retro-rock of Wolfmother remixed into a sexy groove by hipster heroes MSTRKRFT. Both these bands love the ladies … it’s oh-so-rock-n-roll!

Winkar Lopez – Shots (Hands Up Bootleg) (LMFAO feat. Lil Jon vs. Winkar Lopez) – Mexico City
As unapologetic and unironic fans of MTV’s “Jersey Shore,” we have a soft spot for LMFAO, who not only did the show’s theme song, but whose commercial for “Shots” practically became the show’s OTHER theme song. Winkar Lopez’s bootleg remix will have you “beating up the beat” and fist-pumping like a true guido! “Shotshotshotsshotshots… EVERYBODY!!!”

AND IN CASE YOU’VE BEEN LIVING UNDER A ROCK:
DJ Earworm – United State of Pop 2009 (Blame It On The Pop) (Mashup of the Top 25 Hit Songs of 2009 According to Billboard Magazine) – San Francisco
What can we say that we haven’t already? Mashup of the year, literally. This should be put in a time capsule for 2009. It’s got over 10 million views on YouTube, it was listed as #1 on the “Must List” in Entertainment Weekly, and Earworm was profiled on CNN.com. It’s an epic tour de force that, with its widespread mainstream attention, doesn’t just elevate the mashup artform — it takes it to a new level of legitimacy. Bravo!
