New way to DJ discovered by hacking Nintendo's Wiimote
This new DJ style will have its LA premiere on stage at club Bootie in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 4 at Safari Sam's. This groundbreaking set by DJ ! will be only the second live demonstation of WiiJing in action. (The debut performance was at Bootie SF in May.) DJ ! is the leader of the Turlock, California-based group The Silence Xperiment, the mashup team responsible for last year's infamous bootleg album, Q-Unit, which mashed up Queen vs. 50 Cent. For the DJ WiiJ performance on August 4th, DJ ! will be showcasing his new band Miyamoto, where he will control all of the audio using six Wiimotes and two laptops, and will also feature appearances by Super Mario Brothers Mario and Luigi, on guitar and keyboard, playing live mashups, as well as live video mixing. WiiJing is different than regular DJing in a few ways. The most noticeable one is that now DJs have wireless control over the music, which means they can move around freely while mixing in-between songs. This leads to the notion that now DJs can actually dance to the music they are playing, instead of just performing the clichéd head-nod to the beat. WiiJng gives the DJ a stage presence like they've never had before. WiiJing is accomplished technically by mapping out the buttons on a Wiimote controller to the controls (buttons) on the PC DJ software. For example, someone could press the A button on the Wiimote and the song would play as if they pressed the play button. It's also possible to map out hand movements or motion to activate controls. "Flickstarting" is the term given to the act of flicking the wrist foreward to press play, and it also acts as a great way to start a show, from dead silence to the flick of a wrist and the song starts. Everything about this is customizable, therefore not all DJs will WiiJ the same way. Some layouts may use two Wiimotes, while other will only use one. Some may have motion sensing, some vibration, some multiple button functions, and some might have it all. If a DJ doesn't like one particular part of a WiiJ setup, they may choose to alter that one part to make it fit their style. In February 2007, DJ ! launched a website dedicated to WiiJing called djWiiJ.com. The website serves not only as a how-to database but also hosts a community for other DJs looking to try their hand at WiiJing. The website provides maps of different types of WiiJ control layouts for beginners to get started and accepts submissions from advanced users of their "custom" maps. For
