SF Weekly just published a mostly spot-on review of Bootie SF – entitled “Bootie Takes Pop Culture and Rearranges It Completely” – that really captures the essence of the party, especially during the 1 AM hour. (The reviewer showed up late, so he missed the Hubba Hubba Revue burlesque performances and aerial act, as well as Mysterious D‘s prime-time set.) But this quote really nails it:

“[Bootie] reclaims pop music by turning it into a kind of weird folk art reminiscent of fan fiction’s unlimited and uncanny “what if?” scenarios. Much like the dual faces projected on the screen, the mashups are reminiscent of drag turned into an inhabitable experience, where two binary opposites are combined to create an entirely different category.”

This year’s CD contains two tracks we’ve never featured before, including an exclusive, never-before-released mashup from ourselves – A Plus D – in addition to several “Bootie Edits” of tracks that have been on previous Bootie Top 10s. Plus, there’s a special intro from Lobsterdust, and maybe a little secret message at the end too…

This is pretty much the soundtrack of Bootie – in fact, Adrian just wants to put this on at the club and go out into the crowd and dance and sing along for 77 non-stop minutes, just like everyone else!  Hopefully, you will too. Enjoy and please spread the mashup love!

Much thanks go out to Bootie Atlanta’s dj BC, who compiles the annual Santastic collections – including this year’s Santastic 7: It’s A Wonderful Mash – from which many of these tracks are culled from. In fact, we sometimes jokingly refer to these albums as the “Best of Santastic!” Happy holidays, and enjoy!

We’ve been so busy working on renovating this web site that we’ve barely had time to put together a Bootie Top 10 for you. So then it became a Top 15. And now that it’s been two months, it’s a Top 20. Again.

So this is hopefully the last Bootie Top 10 (or Top 20) list we post on this tired old web site, as we prepare to launch the vastly updated, improved, and modernized BootieMashup.com 2.0. With any luck, it will coincide with the release of the hotly-anticipated “Best of Bootie 2012″ CD, which you can look forward to dropping in mid-December. But not before we release “A Very Bootie Christmas 3″ next week!

Yes, we have heard your cries and … well, okay, we feel bad. Sure, we can make all sorts of excuses for why it’s taken us two whole months to post a new Bootie Top 10, or 20, as the case may be — we were busy preparing for the Bootie 9-Year Anniversary, then we went to Burning Man, then we came back and life sort of slammed us in the face, blah blah blah — but still, we recognize it’s been WAY too long.

The new Bootie Mashup web site is still being developed, but when it launches, rest assured, there will be a steady stream of quality mashups each week. And with last month’s demise of GYBO — one of the internet’s best sources for bootlegs — we recognize that now, more than ever, there needs to be a site that curates the best of the mashup world. The bootleg scene is healthier – yet more fragmented – than ever before. But that’s why Bootie’s here, to bring it all together.

This month, we mix and match several variations of a few songs, such as “Good Time,” “Gangnam Style,” “Rumour Has It,” and “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” Think of them the same way we do when parts of certain songs repeat in and out of DJ sets at Bootie — they are muscial motifs!

Thanks, San Francisco! This is now the 7th year in a row we have one one of these two awards! (And only the second time we’ve won both in the same year!)

Thanks to Vincent Giorgetti of Facing Halo Films, we now have another new promo video! Bootie Mashup creators and DJs A Plus D are seen in action at both Bootie SF at DNA Lounge and Bootie LA at Echoplex, along with Bootie house band Smash-Up Derby. This really captures the energy  and insanity of a typical Bootie party! Shot in February 2012.

Wow, you would be amazed at how much faster it is for us to post a Bootie Top 10 when we don’t have to worry about writing little blurbs for each track. We’ll start doing that again when the new BootieMashup.com web site launches, but it will be as individual blog entries … which means you’ll be seeing us a lot more than just once a month!

There’s also a fair amount of ’80s sprinkled in, and – despite our general disdain of the genre, yes, there are two dubstep mashups here too. They say that celebrity deaths always happen in threes, and this past month, we lost three amazing musicians all within weeks of each other.

We were already planning a Beastie Boys mashup tribute in honor of Adam Yauch (aka MCA) when we heard the news about Donna Summer, and then, just a few days later, Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees.
